but as I remember the Dublin Castle was 200 and the H&A was about 100, but they've expanded it since then.
Someone will probably know more precisely.
I make it as 180 tops, and the Hope and anchor was under 100 last time I checked, before the refit. Don't know what the real capacity is.
Email Bugbear. They'll know.
However, the Bull & Gate is also 200, which leads me to think the B&G is rated as just the venue while the DC is rated as the venue plus the pub.
because the DC is much smaller than the B&G in terms of numbers you can get in that room.
dublin castle fits waaaay more than 200 in both back room and pub itself
is officially 150 capacity in the back room where the bands play... why?
you can fit in 200 at a push
and the H&A is more like 75
the hope and anchor is the size of a bedroom. Really. Still, like the venue. DC is much bigger, 200 - 300 easy.
The new layout's gotta allow for 100 I would have thought.
300 skinny indie kids?
now i have half man half biscuit in my head
"we have been in talks with London venues and are now happy to be able to put bands on at 2 top london venues. These are The Dublin Castle and The Hope and Anchor. We are doing it as Brum invasion down south. Once a month we want to take 2 bands from Birmingham to support 2 Cracking London acts. We will arrange the coach down and coach back, tickets, all the posters and promo work in the NME, The Fly and local London rags. In return all we need you to do is fill a coach of 50 less your members of the band. If you think you have the quality and fanbase then please drop us a line."
Note: 50 people for each or the two Birmingham bands, plus two London bands and their fans, which must be numerous since they are "cracking" bands....therefore, too many people for Hope And Anchor???
(Also, of course, what band can can pursuade nearly 50 people to travel down to London on the same day, arriving back home at 4am the next morning, pay coach fare, pay gig entrance and pay London beer prices, for a band they can see in Birmingham frequently? - Answer: A band that doesn't need to play gigs at Hope And Anchor, surely.)
QUICK! ROADBLOCK THE M1!
but I guess it might mean both. Also, are they definitely not paying for the coach? Okay, I guess they aren't but it sounds a bit odd, doesn't it.
If you had all those people coming down and paying you'd get a fair bit back in return.
Dublin Castle want 30 for a rebooking and I think the H&A want 20 or maybe 25.
I think they take the first £75 which generally equates to about 15 people on the flyer price. After that I believe you get 60% of the door price. Anyway, if the promoter and not the band is getting that money (and they may have set up a deal in any case) then they're either offering to pay for the coach and using that or they're creaming vast monies off the top or the bands will probably get back a bit...
Sorry for the ramble.
In short, it's probably a bit of a rubbish deal but two coachloads of people like that won't fuck it up.
It's clearly a bit of a shit deal, given any band could arrange it themselves.
The fifty people each just seems totally unrealistic, and there is a discrepancy regarding the Hope And Anchor's capacity.
I didn't mean to imply the promoter was looking to make a big profit.
used to love playing it and its 'drenched' in history. This isn't helpful though is it?
bullshite promoter talk
may as well read
"we dont care if you get up on stage and piss in a tin can, as long as you bring 50 family memebers to watch you.."
is not the one on upper st
I DO like that venue
it is tiny
and it is fun
joy division play in? i presume that's the 'history' of which prole speaks.
it was in islington, yes?
It's definitely the right Hope & Anchor.
So the numbers aren't unrealistic. If you got that many down I guess you'd maybe make between £70 and £100 on the door and each of those 50 people would be down about £5 in entry fee, nothing for the coach (presumably?) and get a trip to London.
There's nothing really wrong with the numbers but it isn't going to move your band on at all and Bugbear aren't averse to letting out of town bands play knowing they won't get 'the numbers'. Of course they wouldn't make any money if they just went down on their own in a van...
