Have single reviews lost their worth?
In this age where you can check out a song on Hype Machine or YouTube, do single reviews actually have any point anymore? DiS reviews now even contain YouTube videos of the song they're reviewing within them, so why not just watch that and make up your own mind?
It takes me
three seconds to read a couple of lines of a review and look at a rating.
It takes longer to listen to the song.
Sometimes reviews are good, as they can describe something that makes me interested, or saves me wasting my time.
You rarely need to listen to a whole song
to decide whether you think you'll like it or not though. Maybe a one line description and a rating - or even just a "worth checking out" - would be of some use, but I'm not sure an in-depth description of what something sounds like has any point when it's right there for you to listen to.
Personally, I only read reviews of songs I've already heard, to see how my opinion compares with that of someone else, but I think I'd survive if I couldn't do that anymore.
I
quite like reading. Especially when what I'm reading is good.
A case in point: that Driver bloke's Kate Nash single review was brilliant, and I don't even care for Kate Nash.
I
also like drawing and colouring in.
no
they work as a brief nugget of insight into something or other related to the release of the single
deviations from writing purely about the song in question are berated on the comments board
i've always like single reviews to be topical insights rather than bland descriptions
