Awful. Just awful.
But it really is.
GOD YR SO OLD
i was half expecting "its just really good fun, yeah? So just get over it yeah? fucking music snobs"
you just don't geh it
Or just, y'know, awful in general?
I can understand why you wouldn't like it, but it is absolutely not awful. It's laden with melody and energy. It's slightly naïve in places, admittedly, but few debuts aren't.
To me, this just reeks of you getting old.
...like the Kooks.
Which is all I need to know.
It's so, so tired.
It's actually so awful it's funny.
I haven't noticed a similarity to be honest.
Sure, it's derivative of a few previous genres, but it sounds like Jack, it doesn't sound like anyone else. The songs are filled with youthful enthusiasm and it brings me and a large amount of other people great joy to listen to it.
You know this album was never made for you. There's not enough crushing guitar or self-aware "let's-be-pop" sensibility for you to like it, even in an ironic way.
Put yourself in the shoes of someone slightly less jaded however and take it for what it is - an excellent 40 minute dose of pop with lyrics that a younger generation can relate to and singalong with.
It's translated really well on this tour too and I can't wait for more people to discover its charms.
the ones i can bring to mind are completely identical to any other pop song in the last 50 years
"You know this album was never made for you. There's not enough crushing guitar or self-aware "let's-be-pop" sensibility for you to like it, even in an ironic way."
This = ridiculous.
I amtotally open-minded about music. If I wasn't, why would I be sat here doing this?
Although I close-minded enough to appreciate that Mr Penate has not produced a good album.
It's cool to disagree, but the consensus here is that Matinee = Not So Great Really. So it's not just my 'crushing guitar' loving self who ranks it rather lower than your good self.
Horses for courses, eggs is eggs.
I will stand and fight for this album because I believe it's so much better than its already being credit for.
I know you're more open-minded than most and it's something I've always respected you for but I'm just really struggling to see how you can't see any merit from any angle in anyone's pair of shoes on this.
Even just from the fact that I really enjoy it.
If everyone liked everything the same, where's the catalyst for progress? For change?
If people like this record: cool. From an objective perspective: it's a stinker.
One man's objectivity is another's DO NOT EVEN GO THERE, I guess.
I have to go now, tattybye!
It's a different thing to proclaim you don't like it.
It's NOT awful.
it's close-minded to call something awful, after you've listened to it and made your own judgement on it? Why don't we just ban the word awful then, and make it law for everyone to say "in my opinion, I don't really like it very much, but I'm sure it's quite good really".
Capital letters = SHEEESH.
is a man who knows about fun and isnt old
It's samey and bland, overtly jaunty, displays no level of diversity, and it makes me want to listen to the Housemartins - which ARE SO MUCH BETTER.
It's another display of demograph mastery over musical craftsmanship.
I want to get old, just so I can fucking die and not be on the same planet as Penate.
Jaunty hysterectomy Costello-Ballack pop.
why can't things just live and breathe on their own?
There's absolutely no pretensions about 'Matinee', it's just simple, honest pop written by a sometime-heartbroken, sometime-happy young guy.
HE ANNOYS ME.
There, there it is. I'm sorry.
I'm a bad person.
But I still think calling this album "awful" is ridiculous. Because it's not.
gareth. you are not.
and as my evidence, i give you;
"i act stupid,due to cupid,my love's rooted,you'll have to dig down deep,
mixed emotion, fixed devotion, your magic potion you sprinkle as i sleep"
and other similar lyrics i can't be bothered to google.
i just think it all sounds so hollow..and regardless of how heartfelt it actually is...it just doesn't sound that way to me..what i have heard by him sounds quickly produced and flat.
you think music just appears out of nowhere?
or is this an improv album?
I'm merely stating that sometimes when things are a little closer to the heart than they are to a calculator, it can be a whole lot more enjoyable to the listener.
(scampers for the door)
But that's cool.
doesnt have anything in common with my heart. maybe others. hearts are great.
i agree that in all music theres a balance to be struck between these things, but his music sounds very plasticky and uninteresting to me.
actually, ignore me. i dont have a point. i dont like his music, and dont really see anything much good about it. it has qualities that the opposites of which could be seen as negative?
me being generous.
i could've even predicted which long-standing DiS member it would've been.
stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
i like the songs i've heard from him and i REALLY like 'second, minute or hour', but the duet with adele is a bit shit.
i'll still give the album a spin though.
i do understand why people don't like him as a whole, but i don't understand how people don't like his singles. and yeah, i will argue to that end.
make me want to die.
I'll be avoiding this
it's not brilliant
it's not memorable
it's not cringeworthy
it's not original
has always been boring...
at best !
i fear the idea of it like i feared when the skull popped up on the screen on knightmare
before I'd heard a note that dance thing made me hate him. However, I will admit that there've been songs on the radio that I've liked just seconds before finding out it was Penate. As soon as I found out, mind, I HATED him right there and then. The song withered and died.
srsly - he did ok on an acoustic thing I saw once. But for the feet thing? A cunt.
"there've been songs on the radio that I've liked just seconds before finding out it was Penate. As soon as I found out, mind, I HATED him right there and then. The song withered and died."
really wouldn't surprise me if you weren't joking.
what I like about Jack Penate is that he looks like a 35 year old George Michael impersonator.
His music is lame from what I've heard, but that's just been one single. And when i say lame, I mean, if it was recorded on a cassette 4 track in his grandmas living room, I might like it, but it's been 'produced' and therefore lacks the cool points I demand all my musical interests to have
I'm joking of course. I wouldn't like it, even if it was buried in waves of hiss and crackle...it's just cynical pop made by committee.
It was just going to be "Jack Penate - please shut up", and that was it! That was the thread! It was because I heard his new single and it was really, really bad. I mean, his first couple of singles were bad, but this was *really* bad. Like he's getting progressively worse. And though I realise it's unlikely that they've been the released to match the order in which they recorded, that's how it seems in my head. So the sentiment of the thread would have been something along the lines of "Okay, that's enough now. Please stop it", but the sentiment of this one is probably close enough.
please die you tin-eared menace.
produced one track! How did that one come about?
Also: according to the sleevenotes it seems Penate did nothing but sing on Torn On The Platform and Tony Hoffer got Justin Mehdal-Johnson or whatever his name is from Beck's band to do the rest.
Also also: there are Lynne Truss heart attack levels of apostrophe misuse in the acknowledgements.
so i could tell you all that you're joyless indie snobs, always looking for the next mediocre act to pour your superioristic scorn on
how many people who have commented on the album have actually listened to it?
i can understand why you'd level the 'one dimensional' criticism at the boy if you’d only heard the singles. the album is clearly not ‘one dimensional.’ sitting alongside ‘jaunty’ singles like 'second minute or hour’ are tracks of a completely different sound/formation like ‘when we die,’ and ‘learning lines.’
I don’t know why I bother to argue on here about things like this. I really shouldn’t care when people say they don’t like music that I do but it just upsets me when people lower themselves to call people they’ve never met and have no real basis for judging: “cunts.”
theyre clearly not judging the people as people, but as musicians/public figures
this is pretty obvious and shouldnt be upsetting.
has commented on the album - just on whether the singles have lead them to want to listen to it or not
...if you think the album's going to be one-dimensional on account of the singles, could they not have made a better effort in choosing them?
although at times, jack attack makes me feel a little disenfranchised (i think thats the right word), calling him a cunt is just a bit daft really. i think there is a general issue here with the whole LDN thing here...
It was terrible. It sounded like someone had pressed a "reggae" button on a cheap keyboard and then improvised really trite rhymes on top of it. It was actually quite funny in a "so bad it's laughable" way but, speaking as somoene who really enjoys great pop music, it certainly wasn't great pop music.
Granted I've not heard anything else and other stuff may well be better but I can't say I'm hugely moved to find out.
the start of the song sounds like Kt Tunstall, then he reminds me of Kate Nash. The song is ok.
seen him a few times, I think i'd go see him live again (depending on venue size) but i wouldn't bother buying an album.
he has a really popular sound at least i figured, one of his songs sounded like james blunt!
as it's totally forgettable and repetetive.... thus once I listend to it, I forgot it... no crappy melodies or hooks stuck in my head. Where as with stuff like the Kooks that actually has an impact on me... which makes me hate them...
Although an album that can do what the kooks can do is more impressive then Jack's which is just.... mediocre.. no charm or charecter whats so ever.
tells it like it is. Fuck the Penate!
torn on the platform is about being anally raped in a deserted train station. But its probably about some girl getting on a train or something and him being a bit sad.
but not quite as down on him as a lot of people. I enjoy his music - it's pretty funky.
JamesBlunt meets Maroon5 meets Babyshambles...
