Or is this question over-simplistic?
If any one thing overshadows the rest, or is badly lacking I find it difficult to enjoy what I'm listening to.
There are, of course, exceptions to this....
but musical complexity without any emotion can often be shit, i.e. Dragonforce.
As a listener, what I value is my enjoyment of the song.
Basically I like an unusual, memorable melody that is different without being different for the sake of it.
The Left Banke are a great example of what I mean. A cracking tune
That said, things without a particularly great tune can be amazing if the attitude/vibe is right, and melodic things can be shit if it is wrong.
I do know that 90% of modern pop/indie doesn't even hint at satisfying my love of melody though.
Look at the pattern of notes in "Silent Night" or "Someone to Watch Over Me"...Hoagy Carmichael once said something along the lines of "Sometimes I don't know where it comes from" -
Musically, there's an intuition that goes with a great songwriter that can't be quantified or pinned down - the weird intangible bit of talent that will place notes in a way that just knocks you out..."Carmelita" by Warren Zevon is one of these...so simple but poifect.
For all the good punk did, songwriting isn't an equal-opportunity activity. There's an awful lot to be said for theoretical knowledge / being able to translate something in your head to a keyboard / guitar etc rather than bashing away at a fretboard, propspecting for gold.
And not rhyming "Say" with "Anyway" or "Love" with "Above"
and not being gashers
so yes this is overly simplistic
