Bands that seemingly everyone loves and you don't
Foals and Battles. I get it, I just don't really see the attraction. I wasn't that fussed by MMISL until I heard the album either.
Am I alone on these two bands? Any other bands you just can't quite fathom the massive love for?

Both of the above
"I get it, I just don't really see the attraction."
this doesnt make any sense
yes it does
it means that he sees what they are trying to do, but it is dogshit
Whenever I've told anyone I don't like Foals
they make out its because I don't "get" as in understand, them. Like I'm too stupid to like anything vaguely complex. I'm not, I just don't like it.
So, yes, it does make sense.
if you get it, you see the attraction, and understand why people like them
whether or not you like it
no
I get that 2+2=4 but I don't see the attraction of the number four
do you get why people like 4?
Kinda besides my point
I wasn't initially even saying that I get WHY people like them, just that my dislike of them wasn't the result of my brain being so underdeveloped that it couldn't cope with less than straightfoward music
so basically
you dont get it and have a chip on your shoulder about seeming stupid?
^^
meant nicely
Yeah, I suppose you could put it that way
although I think if you don't like people presuming you are stupid because you don't like the same things of them isn't really having a chip on your shoulder
yeah of course
but i dont think not getting something has to be stupid. its ok not to get things
I'm glad someone thinks so too
I probably should have made my point a bit clearer, but it seems my lack of articulation at least gave you lot something to argue about for a while!
yeah i look a bit of an over zealous dick in this thread
i said that what you said didnt make sense, which was entirely unnecessary, but i dont think that terrible a thing to have done, but the rest of it is just me repeating my point until someone stops pointlessly saying that im wrong :(
I think you've missed my point entirely
and I don't really see how I can break it down any further for you
Understanding why someone likes certain bands is not tantamount to liking them yourself. That would be empathy.
_
all im saying is that "getting something" = "understanding it" = "understanding why people like it" = "seeing the attraction"
"i dont see the attraction" means "i can't see what's attractive abourt it"
if something is popular, and you cant see why, you dont get it.
Thats some pretty subjective maths you've got going there
I, and clearly at least one other person, don't agree with it
another example
"why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side"
I get it. I understand why it's a popular joke. I don't find it funny.
sure
but you see the attraction, whether you like it or not.
im just talking about the definition of "seeing the attraction"
to me it means understanding whats attractive about it. to you it seems to mean liking it. i think my definition makes a lot more sense
I don't think
you are making any sense at all. Getting something is not synonymous with seeing the attraction, whether that means understanding whats attractive about it, or liking it
if something is popular
there is something attractive about it.
this is indesputable.
my crazy, far-out-there notion is that for you to claim that you "get" this popular thing, you will at some point in your intellectual journey understand why the many people that like it do so. or you don't get it.
so surely
you see the attraction, but you don't find it attractive?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
but that's what he said
"I just don't really see the attraction"
pretty much the opposite.
attraction/attractive
I have a feeling you pick on the small things as a form of mutual bonding
i dont know what you mean by "attraction/attractive"
you have in this thread claimed that "see the attraction" and "don't really see the attraction" are the same thing
all i did was say that what he said in his post didnt make sense, and when people have disagreed, explained why it doesnt make sense.
not everything
is black and white Christopher
omg
cheers for clearing that up. if you'd care to actually state a point, go ahead.
ok - I'll state my point
don't be such a ridiculous cunt
but not everythings black and white!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no
but some things end up black and blue
now i'm confused
because that's funny (presumably on purpose) so i dont know if you've just been pretending to be stupid and needlessly antagonistic throughout this thread to try and wind me up?
Are you saying that if you don't like something,
you cannot fathom why others would like it?
am *i* saying that?
no, in no way whatsoever.
please cobble together a few quotes from this utterly ridiculous exchange that have me saying anything to that effect.
im saying nearly the opposite. if i understand something, i see why people like it, whether i like it or not.
Well
"I get it, I just don't really see the attraction."
this doesnt make any sense
alcxxk | 03 Oct '07, 15:05 | Send note | Reply
kinda contradicts you there.
eh?
he's saying that:
the phrase "i don't really see the attraction", implies that you can't understand why anyone would like the bands.
the phrase "i get it", is suggesting you can understand why people like the bands.
so it doesn't really make sense.
^^
i don't necessarily agree, but i understood what he meant right away. it's obvious. :p
This whole above exchange amuses me
because it argues a point I wasn't even making.
I "get it" because I am not a moron; my brain can handle 'difficult' or 'awkward' music. I don't assume the foetal position in a corner and rock back and forth if made to listen to anything that doesn't have a verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus pattern or normal time signature.
I "don't see the attraction" personally of these particular bands. Hands up, perhaps I didn't make that completely clear. To partially re-use an example, I understand long division. But unlike an old school friend who also understood long division, I didn't understand it as a subject.
Admittedly it doesn't seem I communicated my point particularly well, but I would have thought anyone who has dealt with people in conversation before would have understood what I meant.
Bah
fucked up my response. Should read "but unlike an old school friend who also understood long division, I didn't ENJOY it as a subject".
Perhaps I am a moron afterall...
^
BUT WHERE DOES IT POINT?!
to agreeing with me
i checked
You knows it
Yeah, Foals are alright
nothing special, but anyone who 'likes' them seems to think they're the best band EVAH.
In my opinion, Neutral Milk Hotel. Except I don't even 'get' them, it's just shite.
thank you
for ending that. i was beginning to see the attraction in mass DiSicide.
I actually posted that
before it began, not sure how it ended up down here.
If you're talking about 'Bands'
that are loved by everyone on this messageboard and not me then i'd have to say Girls Aloud.
ooh good shout
Pixiiiiiiies.
Pixies.
Utter bollocks.
I wonder
where mhann24 is :D
Haha I thought the same thing!
There's absolutely loads
The two most obvious are Radiohead, who I like many of the songs of but certainly don't love in the way other people do and Bloc Party, who strike me as a fairly typical indie band which a couple of very good songs.
The Stone Roses
I get it and hate it!
I've got mixed views on the Stone Roses
For a long time I thought they were ridiculously over-rated but then saw the debut dirt cheap so got it (I'd owned a copy in my teens but hadn't heard it for years) and realised that it does, in my view at least, have some very good songs on it.
I still think they're over-rated but not ludicrously so.
Indeed
it's a good record. Everything else they did was complete bobbins
The Beatles
APPARENTLY they're a band you HAVE to like. I don't mind bits of the White Album but apart from that I'm really not fussed about them.
Enter Shikari until last week...
The Beatles
I can't stand them. I hate them MORE when people tell me I'm supposed to like them.
I vehemently disagree sir!
With the exception of the mighty 'I wanna be adored' its a mess of self-indulgent bombast, wimp-rock and piss-poor lyrics. Though compared to the 'Second Coming' its a flawless masterpiece.
I'd second
what you said about Bloc Party.
Radiohead
Cheers.
the long blondes
and css albums were pants
I wasn't too keen on Battles
but I'd give them another chance.
Do you know who were SHIT though? Kenicke.
^
seconded.
im not sure that kenickie
are that well loved....but in a recent poll in these boards, found to be better than the bluetones.
me....well i really dont like foals. because they are boring and dont play interesting guitars, and seem to have gone pop for the sake of it.
that's what I thought...
but somehow they win you over. I'm not even sure myself why I like Kenickie so much. In theory they should be absolute bollocks.
Forward Russia, Foals, Battles. They all seem really 'cold' and unengaging. I don't like any of them at all. Except maybe for 'Atlas'.
The Fall
The Stooges.
I don't hate them. But I don't like either of them.
.
I totally don't get wh eveyone doesn't love editors. I think they're genuis.
I like them edith
someone has to.
arctic monkeys
playing boring pubrock with a northern accent and being swept up in an immense amount of hype does not make them the savours of rock'n'roll or musical revolutionaries.
I've been listening to their second album recently.
I'm surprised how much I like it. They're definitely not music revolutionaries and certainly not the saviours of rock n' roll but they've got some good songs.
Forward Russia
who I probably should like, but from what I've heard, they don't appeal to me much.
...
Broken Social Scene
This.
Definitely this.
Yeah, got to agree
I have tried and tried to like these guys but can't get past a large 'meh'!
Iron Maiden
Re: Foals
My brother went to see them last night, he described them as Klaxons meet The Cribs. Thus meh.
KLAXONS KLAXONS AND KLAXONS
>:(
Foals
Bloc Party
Good Shoes
Soggypops
oh and deffo Stone Roses
Animal Collective
bought feels and only liked grass off it. strawberyy jam is ok not my cup'o tea.
the cribs, not a fan after seeing them at reading.
Death Cab For Cutie? bore me
also Liars as well
Lots of bands popular on here - one being Foals
Beatles
early Stones
Pink Floyd REALLY annoy me
Smiths
The Fall
Everything played at the indie discos
other than
Modest Mouse - Float On/Dashboard
Kings Of Leon - On Call
of Montreal - Shes a Rejector
Elvis Costello - Pump It Up
Foals - Hummer
CSS - Alala
BATTLES..............
Sound like a selection of Alex Patterson's rejected ideas for Orb b-sides.
Paterson.
.
none whatsoever
i can't think of a single band where i have no idea of why they're popular. Rule of thumb is thus: people, in general, like shit
Go on, i dares yer. Tell me a band and i'll tell you why people love them. Or at least my theories on the matter
Skrewdriver
.
never heard them but, from my very limited knowledge:
some people hate Jews. A helluva lot of other people just don't care about lyrics or ideologies or the moralfortitude of the band they're listening to. Maybe people just can't hear the lyrics (they're a punk/metal band, right?). Maybe some people find the themes ironically amusing or racy
And they make a broad variant of "rock music", right? So all the reasons various people like rock music as well, e.g. visceral power, instuental prowess, song structure etc.
Skrewdriver's lead singer
was a guy called Ian Stewart Donaldson, one of the founder members of the BNP, and the majority of their songs contained references to the holocaust or white power.
fucking future of the left.
and the smiths.
maaaaaaaan
maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan.
i can't see why its hard to work out why either are popular! they're hardly abstract noizze bastards. but i know thats not what the original thread is about. but i am drunk, so i win.
Guns 'n' Roses
Although I will admit Slash is awesome.
The Smiths
New Order (Joy Division = great, New Order = shit)
Happy Mondays
I think the opposite
The Smiths and New Order = great
Joy Division is not shit but I can't stand them. They are exactly the band everyone seems to love but I don't.
Muse.
Joanna Newsome.
Snow Patrol.
Radiohead.
Bloc Party.
To name a few.
yup, definitely Muse.
Agree with all that.
Apart from Newsom.
...
this question works on two levels for me,
1 - the bands that everyone likes in the world that i dont. ie - people at work and the likes. the enemy, the twang, the klaxons, the kasabian, the oasis, the mighty spunkbubbles. music for people who dont like music. music for the football terraces. i dont get what's interesting about these bands but ascribe the disparity down to thiem being half-wits who dont understand music the way i do with my enormous brain.
2 - the bands that other people who are 'into' music like, which i dont get. i think this is what our original questions above was about. usually i understand what theyre trying to achieve i just think its a cliche, boring, or i lose interest after the first 30 seconds of each song. i ascribe this to other music lovers having lower standards than i do.
its all about my brain basically.
.
and yeah, battles falls into point 2 above.
Music for the football terraces
I find that generalisation deeply offensive to be honest.
Why is it that some people have to take on a holier than thou, elitist attitude that people who watch football are therefore devotees of the likes of The Twang, Kasabian, et al?
Many "arty" bands play and watch football.
Mogwai are devoted football fans.
Members of iLiKETRAiNS are devoted football fans (and players).
Big Scary Monsters record label have an (allegedly) pretty hot five-a-side football team.
Yet by your reckoning, to like football means you're not supposed to like their music.
...
dom - i alluded to my views without atually stating them and i apologise for that.
i'm not saying football fans make bad music or that football fans like bad music. but...... i'm saying if you asked 100 kasabian fans whether they liked football, i bet 99 of them would say yes. if you asked 100 football fans what thier favourite band was, i suppose you'd get maybe four or five different answers.
my view is that football fans are pretty much a negative in our society and we'd be better off without them. however daily mail that seems, i think its true.
A massive sweeping generalisation!
Well done.
He's obviously some poncey
girl man.
Depends which fans though
I mean, the people I go to games/gigs with that like football mostly hate the bands you mention, Oasis being an obvious exception.
Why do you see football fans as a massive negative in our society?
I think football fans are some of the most loyal, passionate and dignified people in our society to be quite honest with you.
Who else would take countless days off work and travel hundreds of miles to watch their fourth rate team play at Rochdale or Hartlepool on a cold, wet Wednesday night in February?
Have you ever been to a football match yourself ad_c? I think a bit of education may be in order young man...
...
i used to go to middlesbrough and newcastle games when i was a child. but then i also used to play with lego. i grew out of both.
i dont see any of the things you describe as dignified. how people spend thier spare time is thier business but if i was king for a day (or queen as wrightylew pointed out) then i'd have all the football fans sent away somewhere away from me.
and i find it pretty laughable that anyone who doesnt like football is seen to be immasculated. if thats what being a fella is all about then i'm happy to tuck my sack back and play along.
It's the way you say 'all' football fans.
I go to the football quite often, as do a lot of the people on here. My routine involves buying a ticket, watching the match and going home. The same as 90/95% of other Boro fans. And fans around the country for the that matter.
The way you put all 'football fans' under the same umbrella is stupid.
...
something should change and i dont care how stupid my views would appear to football fans.
I find
your utterly fucking stuck up attitude about football deeply offensive to be honest.
Who?
Me?
Why?
your recent comments
about people who don't go to games were distinctly not on, and this touchy feely thing about music for the terraces only compounds your silliness.
The comments
about people who don't go to games was a valid one Parsefone. There is a new breed of football fan now whose idea of the beautiful game is sitting in a pub at 515 on a Saturday, 2pm on a Sunday or 745 on a Wednesda watching Man U/Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool (delete as appropriate) and who probably isn't even aware of the other 88 league clubs existence!
They think they are tactical feniuses because they have watched Andy Gray draw a broken line on Sky TV yet have probably never watched a live game or kicked a ball themselves.
To put it in a musical context - because DiS is a music based website after all - its the equivalent of slating a band because your friends don't like them or because their image apparently fits some stereotype which you don't approve of without ever having heard a note of their music. A bit like this thread actually...
Wednesday*
geniuses*
keyboarditis.
but that's
as much a sweeping generalisation as saying the Fratellis is music for football fans. You directed the comment at about thirty different DiSers, who were rather innocuously talking about the weekend results. As passionately as you speak about fairweather fans, I could also talk about football elitists, who look down their noses at you for supporting a successful premiership side and not going to every single game, even though you've supported them your whole life and can't afford to.
Sure
there are some fans who've supported successful Premier sides all their lives but I remember when Chelsea were a yo-yo club between the top 2 divisions and regularly getting gates of 9k for a home match (only a decade ago).
As far as I'm concerned someone who has never watched anything beyond Sky Soccer Sunday or ITV Champions League is not a proper football fan, and if that makes me a football elitist (71 league grounds visited and still counting) then so be it.
radiohead
what an utterly dreadful band.
1) THE JAM
They're basically a quieter, less-shit punk band. But they use what sounds like a Hammond Organ in Town Called Malice.
They used Taxman twice, and still didn't better it.
Everyone's like 'Ah they're classic.', but they're just poor. I like Weller, but his music's often shit.
2) THE CLASH
Absolutely one of the worst bands I have ever heard. So, so bad. Its like horribly aged music for balding dads, that's somehow become cool because whatsisface died, and The Libertines were apparently 'RAISED ON THEM'.
3) PIXIES
Boring, rebellious teenager music. NOISE. Quiet. NOISE. Quiet.
These bands say nothing to me about my life.
ALSOlol
THE SMITHS
EVERYONE I know loves them. I think they're sooooooooooooooooo dull. I know 'THAT'S THE FUCKING POINT', but its so 80s. And again, it says nothing to me about my life.
Although, I have been told, by some patronising wankers: 'you'll get it when you're older, and you've actually got something to worry about'.
lol. ;(
'IT SAYS NOTHING TO ME ABOUT MY LIFE'
....deliberate pun?!
:)
Pixies
i know this is a topic about contrasting points of view and gosh, how refreshing it is to not be constrained by society's prejudice.
BUT
anyone that doesn't like Pixies is undoubtedly a sexual deviant. And by that i mean bestial. That's not assertion either, it's purely fact.
Steve Albini
said they're nothing more than passable college rock.
Rihanna
and every other pop act indie kids love because it's "ironic lol."
Yeah.
Or totally open minded.
Indie
Just in general Indie music, its lost its appeal to me. I get it, and I don't like what I'm getting. It's simple and boring. Someone please recommend me something "indie" that doesn't sound like every other "indie" artist. I don't mind Kate Nash however.
Stars.
Good vocalists, that one song. That's all.
Sigur Ros. Post rock for people who don't like post rock.
Heartily agree with Foals and Battles.
BRIGHT EYES.
There is always
an element of Darwinism about a thread like this.
you're not going to supercede me are you?
no, he's going to eat you!
.
My response to the obvious answers in this thread:
1. Radiohead - Fair enough. I find myself slightly bored by them these days, but theres no denying their brilliance and songwriting. I owe them a lot.
2. Bloc party - silent alarm was brilliant, and theyre more than just an indie band, theyre an indie band which tries to be radiohead, which is no bad thing
3. The smiths - That's what I thought. They'll probably come to you at the right time.
4. Joanna newson - no. I've only heard Ys but it's obviously a masterpiece. So no. Denied.
5. Foals - nah, theyre really good, so ner.
6. Battles - the ep.s were better, but still, theyre brilliant.
7. Bright eyes - nah. Also brilliant.
You're argument fell down at "Silent Alarm was brilliant".
In so far as that my opinion is that it wasn't.
"brilliant" "they're brilliant" "brilliance"
FACT CHECKER PLZ.
...
Nirvana, RHCP, Led Zep
...
8. Nirvana - not as good as everyone says, but still brilliiant
9. RHCP - Also amazing. If this board existed when their first few albums came out, i bet half the people would love them, and the other half hate them. People would be using the "IT's FUN! Have you no soul?!" argument. When frusciante joined the started writing brilliant songs, but the lyrics were, as always, terrible. Blood sugar is a brilliant album. By the way is fantastic.
The newest album is and absolute steaming pile of horseshit though.
...
Led Zep make amazing music, by the way, it just never appealed to me. I can appreciate them.
almost
all female singers, very whiny sounding. except for slightly angry sounding ones ( love is all, crass, le tigre, I haven't bothered to find any more due to the first part of the comment)

i hate that i'm the only one who can see bad in these bands :(
i'm such an isolated little indie boy :'(
ha!
i bet you like the enemy too! you need to find some website for people with weird music taste like yours...
I'M ALL ALONE :'(
i'm glad
the smiths were mentioned. what on earth anyone see's in them is totally beyond me.

some nice songs, dull overall.
