Mogwai's Best Album

YouRecluse [Edit] [Delete] 33 replies 12:30, 21 September '07

i cant quite decide which is better, Young Team or Cody, they both have epic songs, Like Herod and Christmas Steps, whilst both having beautiful songs as well, Tracy and Helps Both Ways. Which album is it for you?

  • I'm tempted to say Cody

simply because, around the time it was released, loads of bands had started to rip off Young Team, and Mogwai quite shrewdly ditched the really quiet/RIDICULOUSLY LOUD dynamic and went for more subtle dynamics. Plus Young Team sounds a little weedy production wise. And yet, I get such a smile on my face listening to Yes I Am A Long Way From Home and Mogwai Fear Satan - might be a nostalgia thing though. But then, Xmas Steps is incredible and complete negates what I said above. Should I have just said 'I don't know' a few sentences back?

    • I think CODY may be my favourite

I love the production on it- it's quite spacious, which I something I feel the more recent releases don't have.
There's a point in 'May Nothing But Happiness' where from in everything totally falls into place.. the trilogy of Ex Cowboy/Chocky/Xmas Steps is brilliant.

  • the one that goes quiet/loud

lolz. i dunno, id say government commisions as it has amazing versions of helicon1 and 2wrongs which are far superior to the recorded versions

    • i love government commisions

for very similar reasons to this. but at the end of the day it is just a bunch of peel sessions jammed together, its not an album.
my fave album is cody, i dont know why, it just is.

      shallwesetbenonfire @Jordan_229_2 | 21 Sep '07, 12:41 | X
  • I'd say Government Commissions

because it doesn't have any of the boring stuff that's on every album.

I used to love mogwai, still do probably, but i find myself bored a lot of the time whilst listening to anything other than government commisions.

    • Totally

although I think Rock Action is the strongest of the rest

  • My Father My King

is as long as some people's albums, and doesnt bore me

    • I love that

1 song EPs are sexy. Amazing live too.

  • Rock Action.

  • Government Commissions

Supoib. Of their studio albums, I'd go for Cody, though I'm a big fan of Happy Songs For Happy People.

    colonol_k | 21 Sep '07, 13:04 | X
  • Happy Songs for Happy People

Their most consistent one, and Stop Coming to my House is an immense album closer

    charliepanayi | 21 Sep '07, 13:08 | X
  • I don't think

Mogwai have a BEST album as such. Their back catalgoue is so diverse in style and mood it makes it impossible to order them in terms of good-bad. If I had to pick one as a desert island disc I'd probably go for CODY. For me that album pretty much sums up the epic live shows Mogwai used to do which left me a quivvering wreck.

I'm not such a big fan of the shorter tracks they make nowadays where they condense their fury into 5 or 6 minutes. For me Mogwai peaked in 2001 and perhaps My Father My King will be the defining moment of their career.

    flackcaptain | 21 Sep '07, 13:16 | X
  • Young Team no doubt

but they have been pretty consistent since then

    doctornovocalcords | 21 Sep '07, 13:31 | X
  • Young Team

SHOULD be their best album but it's let down by the production. CODY is basically quite boring taken as a whole though it has some high points.

'Rock Action' is probably the most consistent so is the best as an album but contains none of their best songs.

    Happy Songs is rubbish.

I didn't bother with Mr Beast.

MFMK contains every good trick mogwai ever pulled in one 20 minute track, so could almost be their defining moment.

The EP version of Xmas Steps is, however, their greatest track. It shits on the album version.

    Top Mogwai songs

    1.Xmas Steps
    2.Like Herod
    3.Summer
    4.Fear Satan
    5.Christmas Song

    restlessboy | 21 Sep '07, 13:31 | X
    • what???

Rock Action contains "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong" - clearly one of Mogwais best moments.

      Best Mogwai songs:-

      1. Helicon 1
      2. Mogwai Fear Satan
      3. My Father My King
      4. 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong
      5. Like Herod

    • Happy Songs has got one good song

      the first one

    • Is that the one of the 'Fuck The Curfew' EP?

I think I might own that actually, I'll have to dig it out!

  • can't remember who i was discussing this with recently

we were pondering mogwai doing a DLB show and which album it'd be, most likely either Young Team or CODY.

I honestly can't decide between YT, CODY and Rock Action, as there is something about rock action that can captivates me from the opening of sine wave right through to the close of secret pint. But then I spent many years listening to YT & Cody on repeat so quite simply I don't know.

    Brooner | 21 Sep '07, 13:53 | X
  • Rock Action

is probably the one I'll keep coming back to.

It's like picking a favourite child though, really.

    roastthemonaspit | 21 Sep '07, 14:10 | X
  • Tough call

I think Young Team is overrated in that it's not as consistent as some of their other records. Admittedly it has several of their best tunes - 'Yes! I am a long way from home', 'Like Herod', 'Tracy' and 'Mogwai Fear Satan' - but I often skip tracks when I listen to it now.

By contrast, Come On Die Young is both great and consistent. And it contains 'Helps Both Ways', 'Christmas Steps' and 'Ex-Cowboy'.

I really like the Zidane soundtrack. It soothes me.

    Raanraals | 21 Sep '07, 16:04 | X
  • Young Team

just about edges it over CODY, but Ten Rapid and Kicking A Dead Pig will always have a place in my affections too. It's nearly 10 years since Young Team came out!

    jedeteste | 21 Sep '07, 16:12 | X
    • This is a trick question

There IS no decent Mogwai album.

      Do I win £5?

      Silentcommand @jedeteste | 21 Sep '07, 17:26 | X
      • At a push Young Team

Although like with most it's the songs, heard Cody first and 'Waltz for Aiden' stands the test of time, 'Cody' and first track with Iggy Pop but there's something about Young Team, Rock Action, Sine Wave is ace and wish they'd had done more like this with laptops, rest, nah... Got a mate well into them but I find them really predictable in the slow, heavy bass drum, loud bits and stuff

      • you win

        • Everything before HSFHP

sounds like an EP with some fillers, apart from Rock action which is just generally bad (with a couple of BIG exceptions).

          Mr Beast. Thats the one.

A quite good album by a band who make quite bad albums.

  • ...

It's really fucking quite obviously Come On Die Young, innit? Amazing piece of work, absolutely stellar........

Young Team is alright, but lacks cohesion completely.
