PJ Harvey by a country mile for me.
Pulp 'Different Class' so I'll go for that.
bring it on got me through my GCSE's.
i'm actually serious
i know what i mean
this is fucking stupid. Im completely sick of this.
First of all, "they" (as in the image conscious, indie dabbling, nick hornby mercury panel) would'ave hated klaxons.
"stupid scene band, 1 or 2 good tunes, hugely overated" they wouldave said.
Then everyone came to that conclusion, BECAUSE THAT'S THE TRUTH.
But no, then comes the anti-backlash. You get tossers saying "OMG you take yourselves too seriously. Theyre just, like, a pop band, yeah? They write great pop tunes and are really fun and innovating but, like, in a pop context. Best pop band for years, yeah? You're an indie snob, man. Learn to enjoy yourself"
and it is obviously an attempt to be anti-anti-anti(ad infinitum) backlash and subvert everyone by showing they can "go along with a phase, yeah, but see beyond it and prove that its actually founded on something, yeah?"
When actually "stupid scene band, 1 or 2 good tunes, hugely overated"
and i like them very much
that a band who are in the charts and write 3 minute singles are a pop band.
I thought the mercury prize was supposed to celebrate TRULY groundbreaking, interesting, and PROPER music.
Pop music is about singles, right?
It may be a fairly "rockist" approach, but im yet to be convinced you can do anything properly earth shattering and passionate in 3 and a half minutes.
To me, pop music is about instant gratification. And don't get me wrong, I love some of that, but you know, i wouldnt say klaxons are "proper" music.
Though I havnt heard the album. If all the songs that werent released as singles are 7 minutes long, have 3 different movements, and lyrics about suicide, I may change my mind.
that is 7 minutes long with 3 different movements is completely utterly gash though.
It was mostly rhetoric, but you get my point.
All the concepts, themes, emotions of an album > 3 minutes of fun
but you can have that within a pop album
you also miss the unifying nature of a pop single, something far removed from what most albums can achieve. And that in itself is something fairly earth shattering, particularly if you're able to break boundaries and express passion whilst appealing to a vast cross section of listeners
But surely pop singles can only do that in context?
A brilliant album still sounds brilliant years later. "golden skans" sounds boring once you stop listening to it.
but Golden Skans is rubbish
...I reckon it could soundtrack a good night out, each song being a different part, feeling ect.
are more than four minutes long.
far too much fucking credit. You do realise Conor McCuntfeatures was on the panel. As was "zeitgeist felcher" Lauren Laverne.
I'm sure most of the judges absolutely loved Klaxons, talking about freshness and innovation and whatever else they've read about them in OMM. They weren't victims of any anti-backlash
were infinitely more deserving than the Klaxons. My indifference towards them has thickened into outright hatred after watching their acceptance speech
I'd say Primal Scream, Pulp, and Peej were probably the most deserving winners.
Didn't Belle and Sebastian win it once or was that soemthing else?
have never won it, nominated for Dear Catastrophe Waitress, that is all. Same number of nominations as Spice Girls, Robbiew Williams, Catatonia, simply red and Sting, yum!
best newcomer at the Brit awards one year and put Simon Cowell's nose out of joint.
Bring it on. love that album
least deserving: Arctic Monkeys
he threw away the cheque on stage and then had to ask for a new one a few days later.
by four country kilometers
I once would have said Screamadelica but I have come to realise that without Weatherall it would have been a nasty blues fest.
back when it was about picking a really good album, and not about trying to look like you're in touch with the scene.
Strictly on the criteria set out by the Mercury board I would say Roni Size, Portishead and in some respects Arctics last year.. But if you are judging strictly on the best album then Amy Wine' or Arctics should of won this year IMO...
