any answer other than the Stones is basically wrong, and they only made it work because they were such obviously obnoxious dickheads that it was clearly pointless questioning it.
everything about him is totally steeped in Americana, he is totally obsessed with it musically and lyrically. Ok this perhaps doesn't mean he sounds American, but to all intents it's the same.
Australian rock music is clearly heavily influenced by the US and the UK, as is the whole of Australian life, but Aussie rock bands (the good ones, not Jet) do sound uniquely Antipodean. In the same way that the Flying Nun/Xpressway bands from NZ sound loads like the Velvets and British post-punk but the combination makes them completely unique.
Lyrically, particularly all the Bad Seeds stuff before The Boatman's Call, he is really rooted in all that religion and incest Southern Gothic stuff.
And lots of the music seems to reflect that, I mean things like The Cure of Millhaven very obviously so, but to me most of the Bad Seeds stuff seems almost like a pastiche or experiment with traditionally American forms of music.
but i wouldn't say that means he sounds American at all... the fact it's a pastiche remains. what modern music isn't a form of a previous style, especially american forms of music?
the pastiche is so convincing he could conceivably be American. It's not the same as, to take an obvious example, Boredoms trying to sound a bit like Sonic Youth but remaining Japanese sounding. With the Bad Seeds they've tried to sound American and gone as far as they possibly can in terms of immersing themselves in Americana without actually becoming American (in a similar way to Scout Niblett I'd say).
I suppose you could argue that in a way than faux-American quality makes them out as being particularly un-American, but since they are making a deliberate effort to sound American and pulling it off...well...yano..
elvis impersonation so understandable
But doen't make it less American-sounding. He sounds American in things like Deanna and a few other songs too.
except not in a good way
although allegedly less so on new album.
They're from Sweden.
Make Way For The Ocean...blah blah, was one of my favourites of last year. Just flawless!
