Remember when you couldn't tell the difference between a glockenspiel and a xylophone? (Yeah, like I can now!) They were just fucking bells! Remember before p4k got you to equate albums you liked with obscure literary references and words you had to look up in a dictionary? Remember when a song was either cool or not cool and really that's all that mattered?

Is the listening experience better now that you're so damn smart, or was it better before?

  • It was easier before

Now I hate 95% of the stuff I hear.

  • I don't know about smart

but the ability to download anything I want anytime I want has definitely changed things. For some stuff you end up tracing back to their influences and then realising that the guys you listened to in the first place were shamelessly ripping off Band X. Even though that shouldn't make you enjoy a band less, it does!

On a side note being a 'musician' also changes the way you listen to music whether you like it or not. Knowledge of notes, chords and instruments means that I sometimes wince when I hear the same stuff over and over again. I sort of wish that my brain was less analytical but on the other hand i've discovered some stuff that i've really loved because of it. So, er, yes and no.

      Pretty interesting. Possibly.

      • Your first post is exactly what I was talking about

the blog had its funny moments, but Max sounds like he needs a nicotine patch... disco/techo/house/drum'nbass whatever you want to call it has always sounded alike, isn't just a product of this millenium, imo.

        • Haha

I'll tell him you said that. Without the people who notice minor details we'd probably have less interesting music though so he's doing a good job really.
