Right-arm or left-arm?
The National by far.
The Decemberists are great but its hard to have any sort of emotional connection with their music.
I prefer almost everything about them to The Decemberists.
by a country mile
but at times The National sound like a pedestrian band (I'm thinking Secret Meeting here).
The Decemberists and their flourish with lyrics make me sometimes swoon with giddiness.
I'd say The National by about one inch, but not by much
The decemberists are the worst band i've seen in a looooooooooooong while. so boring.
Can't actually choose, depends on my mood. I prefer Boxer to the Crane Wife though.
I can't listen to more than 3 Decemberists songs in a row before the singer's voice boils my blood with annoyingness.
the lyricism and variation in the music's ace. The National are good, but a bit derivative of other bands i.e. Interpol, The Smiths etc.
I find loads of their songs quite easy to connect with, like Angel and Angles and On The Bus Mall. Colin Meloy's solo stuff's great too.
This is not to say that I don't like The National - Alligator was one of my favourite albums a couple of years ago.
the decemberists not a bit derivative of Neutral Milk Hotel?
i love both bands (the national and decemberists)
Quite how you can think Decemberists are derivative of NMH is well beyond me. Even the similarities are sparse, maybe they both enjoy writing using unusual concepts, they're both American bands....
think its easy to make comparison between decemberists and NMH, especially early decemberists work.
there's certainly a big influence in there.
please. It's like having to choose between donating both lungs or your heart for transplant. Alligator and Picaresque are both in my top 5 albums ever, I really can't split them. And although Boxer > The Crane Wife, I also think Custaways and Cutouts > Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers....
because musically they're much better (though I really like both bands' lyrics).
And also because Matt Beringer's voice is far superior to Colin Whassisname's.
is it just me that thinks Boxer is an absolute snoozefest though? Just totally boring. I thought it would grow on me but after six or seven listens it still does absolutely nothing. Almost makes me want to cry after Alligator being so brilliant.
but The Decemberists are great too, just not in the same league as The National.
& the decemberists are not great. indie folky wank.
