Someone just texted in to Xfm to describe the new Travis single as such. That's an oxymoron, right?
Melodic. But, well, not very good.
Why does a song have to be anything else?
Fuck off, you fucking fuck. If it sounds nice, it sounds nice. Don't go all "Well it sounds nice... but it's Travis, therefore it must be shit". Fuck you. Don't go emailing radio stations and ruining their reputation just because you're insecure. I liked Will Young's new album. Too fucking right I did, and I'm not going to go about pretending I didn't just because I'm worried what people will think of me. Just go fuck yourself.
why do you care so much?
it's indicative of such a superficial appreciation of music.
to me, melody is so important, and always my primary concern when I'm both listening to and writing a song. To write a melodic song is a fine thing, and although it doesn't automatically qualify a song for greatness, to describe something as "melodic shite" is pig ignorant.
since when does melodic = good?
melodic means "possessing a melody", and in this case probably means "possessing a good and/or enjoyable and/or noteworthy melody". The Travis song may well fulfil said stipulation, but still fail to satisfy any of the multitude of other factors by which one can tell the difference between "shite" and "not shite"
mel·o·dy (m?l'?-d?) pronunciation
n., pl. -dies.
1. A pleasing succession or arrangement of sounds.
Pleasing = good. There is no way in hell that "melodic" can be used in a negative context.
but the vast quantity of other factors could rule out any positives gained from being melodic
if something focussed on melody at the expense of every different facet of the music, or if it was cynically focussed around the melody because that's what often makes a song popular.. well, it'd be conceptually sound to describe that something as "melodic shite". Not that i'm suggesting that these were the intentions of said xfm listener
but to me, he was fairly obviously trying to give the word "melodic" negative connotations, and that makes me sad/angry, for reasons posted slightly further up.
you're probably right. I was just pedantically pointing out that "melodic shite" isn't necessarily an oxymoron
Like it or not - it obviously does have negative connotations in the context of bands like Travis.
Melodic = Watery, bland, acoustic-y, shallow, etc
Don't take something which is the basis of every great pop song and pitch it as a reason not to like a song. And for the record, the Travis song isn't bad at all, because it *is* melodic.
I think you could waste a lot of time getting worked up over this, but at the end of the day, I doubt I'm the only one who saw "melodic shite" and understood exactly what he meant. Even though -technically- he used the wrong word...
I would have just come back with an Alexander Pope quote: All dischord is just harmony, misunderstood.
And then gone back to listening to Meshuggah. Smugly.
i reckon he listens to metal, in which case he probs deservesd to have his ears cut off... but each to their own really.
who listens to metal deserve to have their ears cut out?
Haven't you heard? There's a new music taking over the country. It's called Indie...
but I did just hear Why Does It Always Rain On Me and I thought it was indeed shite. Melodic or not, still shite.
the new one apes The Shins in a cackhanded manner
so we can't be too critical.
