Japrocksampler
Has anyone heard about this? Julian Cope writing a sort of follow-up to Krautrocksampler, this time about freaky Japanese psych bands.
I can't see how this won't be interesting...

There was an article in OMM
http://music.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,,2145512,00.html
yup
you can preorder it at amazon now.
it'll be immense. he's focussing on some REALLY good bands... Flower Travellin' Band, Speed Glue & Shinki, etc
Has anyone read this yet?
I saw a copy the other and it looks real nice, but the reviews I've read have been far from glowing.
The reason for this bump is because I'm halfway through listening to Taj Mahal Travellers' 'August 1974' album. Incredible stuff. Weird long drones that sound like contemporary noise bands.
I'm reading it now
It's really entertaining so far (he's really enthusiastic), not up to the Taj Mahal Travellers bit yet. It's a bit hard to keep track of all the different names and he spells Keiji Haino wrong but they are pretty minor things I suppose. Here's a Les Rallizes Denudes snippet i've just read:
"...such was the bad luck of the Rallizes that the festival took place during a typhoon. The organisers, fearful of an avalanche, insisted the band turn down the volume. When Mizutani refused, the terrified crowd fled to the safety of the funicular railway."
Apparently he doesn't even care if his band gets hit by an avalanche!
Ha ha!
Brilliant. I would like to read it, but I was slightly put off by the reviews. Its the only place you can read about those bands though so I guess it is worth buying for that reason alone.
his problem
is that his writing style is so fun and he's so enthusiastic that he does make bands sound better than they are. so Flower Travellin Band's Satori IS indeed ace, but it's not as ace as he makes it sound.
oh
it is though.
I read a review in
The Independent on Sunday a couple of weeks ago and they were really glowing over it. It was added to my Amazon wish-list for prospective ideas for christmas...
I'll wait...
until it's released in paperback, if they are going to at all...
It's too expensive for me right now.
its only a tenner on amazon
isn't it?
it's very nicely bound *works for publisher*
Is it really only a tenner? And nicely bound?
To Amazon for me then
(I hope you're getting a commission for this sale Jamie Summers)
are brast burn in there?
listened to their 'debon' album yesterday on the way to work, stunning - obviously what made the boredoms stop being a spazzy punk band and start jamming in the asteroid belt. i really need to read this book, all the outsider japrock of this era is gold - tokyo kid brothers, flower travellin' band, taj mahal travellers, far east family band, blues creation, magical power mako, rallizes etc. should all be included. hopefully we'll get some info on the more modern junk like kousokuya and the acid mothers dudes too.
