Like the article says, pretty much the last of the bebop generation. Although the great thing about Roach was how he acted as a bridge from bop into the next wave of jazz (Rollins, Davis, etc).
Listening to Rollins "Saxophone Colossus" now, and his work on it is pretty much a masterclass in jazz drums - constantly inventive, yet never showy.
you should hear him at massey hall with mingus powell bird and dizzy. unbelievable. the man drives so hard.
