Not that The Milk Eyed Mender isn't fantastic.
Please agree with me.
put our personal arguments on a message board?
Milk-eyed Mender >>>>>>> Ys
and this is a music website. I am encouraging discussion.
And you are wrong.
you're wrong - Ys is massively overblown. It's good, but suffers from being too artfully long. It suffers from saying "I'm a poet"
Milk-eyed Mender just has better songs anyway
'It suffers from saying "I'm a poet"'
So did you like 'Milk Eyed Mender' for its simple catchy tunes and everyday, kitchen sink lyrics?
I think Ys is better but we're talking about the difference between a 9/10 and 9.5/10 record.
Although The Book Of Right On is my favourite Newsom song.
Both 9/10 for me
I even started a thread saying it once, and got called stupid by practically everyone on DiS.
Although they're both so damn good it doesn't really matter
Now I extra want to go!
there's only one arrowy thing. I listen to TMEM more though because the internet has shortened my attention span.
they're two sides of the same coin...one is her pop sensibility, chorus driven, 3 or so minute nuggets of pure pleasure. The other is her classically trained, pitch perfect ear, fully orchestrated master pieces. Both equally as good depending on what side of the coin you want to land on.
I like it slightly less now, its overblownness detracts from it I think. And TMEM has so many great songs.
Ys < The Milk Eyed Mender
but there's only one '<' there.
Its so much easier to listen to, just from sheer length of the songs, Ys can be exhausting(good but still exhausting) sometimes.
but it would have to be pretty incredible to be better than Ys.
thats about the only way it trumps Ys
In terms of scope, beauty, emotional resonance, arrangement, musical construction, mood, texture and lyrics Ys blows MEM away . Some of those qualifications are subjective, but if you compare the mastery of, for example, Ys' lyrics next to the sometimes clumsy and adolescent missteps of MEM's lyrics.. well, it obvious really. To me, lyrics are probably as important as any other area of music, but the same can be said of pretty much every area of comparison
I just don't see there being much of a contest
It is such an experience. I consider anyone that says it suffers from being overblown slightly daft. I wasn't even too fussed about her on hearing Milk Eyed Mender.
because it is just more enjoyable, it kind of draws me into a vivid childlike fantasy world, ys doesn't it is more subdued and I don't like how the cartoonish string section dances round her playing without ever geling and the cover is horrible
Ys draws me into a vivid childlike fantasy world more than any other album
I don't listen to Ys any more. It's overblown and silly.
The Milk Eyed Mender, on the other hand, has some lovely songs which I'll never tire of.
