Pretty unmentionable in polite company?
is a big fan. He's a great guy.
I don't like Iron Maiden at all though.
here comes the vengeful wrath of summers!
my friend loves this band. i just ignore it exists like i would a relative in jail for a sex crime or something.
they're not OMG AMAZING, but they can be pretty satisfying if you've got the urge for that kinda thing.
I suppose that depends on if you reckon the band themselves take their schtick seriously or not.
I don't think they do, so for me it's not really possible to like them ironically.
I don't like any band ironically. And I like Iron Maiden a lot.
the thread was prompted by a weird little incident at a pub last night.
I was out on the cancer terrace having a cigarette and there was this girl out there in skinny jeans, studded belt and cut-off Iron Maiden t-shirt.
I asked her (not unreasonably) what she thought of the new album.
'What new album?' said she.
Errrr...the new Maiden album.
'OMG, I don't even know who they are, I just like the 'rock girl look'.
I blame Grazia magazine and their fucking obsession with 'Festival chic'.
I wish they'd all get back to wanting to look like suburban Barbie again.
after they started selling them in topshop a few years ago.
Also: people in 'Pauls Boutique' clothes. The fashion industry should be marmalised.
They're selling the Sonic Youth shirt with the Goo album artwork on it now.
It gets harder and harder to tell if a girl is into music or whether she's just 'working a look'.
I can't stand when people wear band tshirts and have never heard of the band
on quite such a number of different levels. Literally the worst band possible, perhaps? Maybe they should be congratulated for the achievement.
'Go boil your head'
is one of my favourite activities
(I didn't know her then). I, however, prefer Bruce Dickenson's brother's band.
Oh, and my buddy tried to get me to go to an Iron Maidens show, an all girl cover band. I declined, but not because they're "unmentionable in polite company." I just didn't have the money/time.
Are you coming out for or against Maiden?
I'm in the pro Maiden camp.
i have no time for indie schmindie pretentious losers who can't have fun without it being ironic.
I was watching the webcast of their headline from Download and it looked like the most fun ever.
and that Rock In Rio DVD is spectacularrr. I should listen to them more really.
I would have loved to have been there.
Looked fucking awesome.
...I'm pro liking Iron Maiden.
and then knowing more about indie music than supposed indie types.
then you'll find it difficult to hold polite conversation.
metal can be really really great.
Iron Maiden are rubbish
You like Grade and as such you should be familiar with their final (and in my opinion best) album, Headfirst Straight to Hell in which similar themes are explored to those which often feature in maiden songs.....
Good and evil, life and death, horror imagery, etc
Don't get me wrong, I loved Grade and saw them live on several occasions, but, I find it odd that you could castigate Maiden for being 'silly' or 'rubbish' when you profess to like a band that clearly loved Maiden and were heavily influenced by them.
I didn't say you had to 'like' them, did I?
I said it was a little strange that you seemed to deride them on the basis of their 'silliness'.
the argument about their quality is silly, they hardly have any.
"metal is niche!"
"download is a niche festival!"
these are some of the things that get said to me when i hang around with indie folk.
it's hilarious that they think they're not wrong.
and little else.
I can't understand people who take it seriously, but i respect their enthusiasm. I wish better bands had more enthusiastic fans.
couldn't agree more. Great musicians, obviously very good at what they do, I just can't listen to it for more than 10 or 15 minutes without it really starting to grate on me.
but I literally despise this band so much it makes me feel physically sick. I don't respect their enthusiasm. I find it really sinister.
i'm not saying you should like them, but why so hostile?
i don't think iron madien takes iron maiden deadly seriously, thus leaving little room for 'irony'. i've liked them since i was 11, and i still like them.
Paul D'ianno was the singer then. At the time i thought it was the greatest thing i'd ever seen. Oh to be young again.
And I wish Bruce Dickinson was my dad!
"Wasted Years" came up on my ipod! Woo!!
is next on my playlist!
Think today shall be Maiden day!
...yesterday through some portable speakers and there was some Maiden on there. This guy in his 40s was out walking his dog and upon hearing what I was playing he came over, sat down and started to tell me anecdotes about Donington, his metal youth and his passion for Maiden/Priest and much else besides.
Maiden, bringing people together.
You wouldn't get that with Ocean Colur Scene!
cant listen to em.
