Tom waits
I love this man, oh so much. I've been playing "ruby's arms" off Asylum Years over and over again. The disney strings are fantastic. I like his croaky voice ballads the best, but his weird stuff is also fantastic. HE's brillant.
So, tom waits... best album?
But also, hes a MASSIVE COCKFACE, cos he has a stupid "minimalist" website.
cock.
best album?
raindogs or blue valentines
and
i think the poor guy's way too old to know what the internet is, he seems to only function in good music and being a weirdo
He makes me want to smoke 60 a day
so when im 19 i can go up to little kids at the street and growl at them till they cry.
FUCK YEAH!
he sounds like
a child catcher
Yeah, an attractive resource
with complete discography and lyrics wouldn't go amiss.
I like the modern stuff best
the production is amazing, so many great sounds on there. He's probably the worst bit, his band are amaaazing
i.e Orphans, and Real Gone, Mule Variations etc
Personally
I think he is a better writer than artist.
i definitely prefer the weird stuff to the ballads
Rain Dogs is easily the best
And his more recent albums, whilst good, are nowhere near his primetime efforts (i've not heard the recent 3 disc btw)
orphans
is goooooooooooooood
Yeah, it is.
Bawlers (the "ballads" cd) is my favourite. He has that chord progression he uses a lot where it plays a major chord, then the bass note moves up a semitone, then it moves to a minor chord two semitones up from the original major chord. I dont know how to speak music language, but anyway.
He uses it a lot, and its brilliant, and practically "his".
Rain Dogs is best.
Lots of his best songs combined with nutty instrumentation. Somehow manages to seem more true to his blues / jazz routes than his earlier stuff in spite of (because of?) its general bizareness.
Ugh
Did I really just type "routes"?
*Roots!
use google durdur

swordfishtrombones
alice
franks wild years
rain dogs
small change
alice is a bit rubbish
imo
I used to think that until about 2 weeks ago.
Now I can't stop listening to it. Go figure.
so wrong
you should die
Based on his Sparklehorse cameo,
I cannot understand the appeal. It's his voice, I just don't like it.
piss off
Get orphans
its brilliant.
Oh yeah, and go shut up and piss off, you shitting motherfucker!
I forgot
never to spoil a love-in. Especially with paper-thin arguments.
MOST OVERRATED ARTIST EVER
PROLEFACT
No.
oh ok silly me
yeah sorry.
I wasn't going to give you a proper reply.
piss off
i remember a thread you did where you declared Tom Waits overrated (alongside other such luminaies as Frank Zappa, Slint and Bob Dylan)
Basically, it was the wrongest thread ever. You should stick to (non-music) posting on the social board
with respect
you have about as much right to say that as I do about music so with no little lack of eloquence, go fuck yourself.
Regards.
get told!
Tom waits fans
are easily the most offensive po-faced morons who make music fandom look about as fun as collecting novelty porcelin pigs and giving them individual names.
Seriously let other people have opinions without ordering Pogroms, you vinegary automotons
No.
take your own advice
I'm a Tom Waits fan.
I used to collect bookmarks, badges and stamps. I didn't give any of them individual names though.
calm down dearest
i wasn't being particularly serious, your post just reminded me of that thread. The thread which pretty much cemented 'prole-art-threat' in my brain.
Please engage your panty de-twistyfying machine.. NOW!
Best Wishes.
well yes I may have overreacted to your post and you seem rational
so let's not judge each other badly!
agreed
.

Bone Machine
Is easily his best album that isn't Rain Dogs.
i almost agree
Nah.
Swordfishtrombones and Frank's wild years are better. And I prefer the Black Rider too. Although I can't really explain why.
Tom waits
was the artist that made me realise that maybe my dad doesent actually have that outdated a music taste.
DADROCK
MYDAD>YOUROCK
I think Fullerov is right
He reminds me of Leonard Cohen.. other people do his stuff better.
more overrated than Bob Dylan
Is this technically possible?
(awaits obligatory 'no' from 'yes' who somehow sounds to me like the single most dullest person on the planet.....is this technically possible?)
I dont think very highly of dylan, actually.
Hes good an all, but still.
I can't be bothered with you. You're just a bit sad, to be honest.
and why is that ubercool?
Still jealous of your step-sibling?
fuck off
with respect
you are quite a tit.
shut up.
You're not funny.
never aim to be
youre not interesting, but I feel that's your reason for living and youre somewhat failing!
dude, you know nothing about me.
I dont think i'd ever even replied to one of your posts until that thread about mothers. You're kinda sad.
you american are you? 'kinda' 'dude'
I think your sadder going onto a music forum and moaning about babies like they're illegal but oh well youre cool and I'm sad, well done you win tee hee.
You're the one who gave himself a daily "column" on this "music forum"
pretty much which you "humourously rant" about stuff in, every day: please shut the fuck up.
I like how you guys "jumped" over my post
to carry on your argument!
hahah!!1!1
In response to you:
i've never listened to leonard cohen.
*cough*
mixtape
*cough*
=D
Dylan,
Waits
&
Cohen
are three of my very favourite artists of all time.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?????!
you're in the same boat as me
this is a BAD THING
swap cohen
with waits and tell dylan to fuck off and you can go to bed with me
The Warn - Pretty good taste?
them all
apart from night on earth which doesn't hang together so well for me. He means everything to me, in terms of music. I can't think of anyone with a better voice, truly. And his versions are almost always the definitive ones. And let's not get started on the over-rated debacle.
my favourite album
is The Heart Of Saturday Night then I'd probably make a comp from all the other albums. At the recent St Jude's/Thomas Truax gig they were playing The Heart Of Saturday Night over the PA prior to the bands and it was great to hear it in that enviroment, bones_howe, I'm sure you would have approved
The gratuitous hostility from prole in this thread is a bit of a yawn
my favourite albums is
Blue Valentine. Just because it is the nicest to listen to.
But I think for the sheer audacity and musical importance at the time his best album is probably Swordfishtrombones. Or if we are talking songwriting then Small Change.
i think my second ever post here
was about tom waits..where i got scolded for even suggesting that he wasn't such a hidden treasure and pretty accessible.
i do like him though.
what's he bu.i.l.d.i.n.g in there??
clang boom steam
Real Gone is as good as anything
Small Change
never seems to get much love and is one of my favourites, along with Alice, Blood Money, Rain Dogs, Nighthawks, Black Rider etc.
small change is great
in the cd i have the jane meadows line on the title track has been overdubbed, but on asylum years it's as was recorded. Also on asylum years for small change if you turn it up you can hear an 'echo' of the song (I'm presuming it's what the mic picked up from his headphones while he was in the booth). Hmm yawnsome from me there, soz.
