Tom waits

yes_ [Edit] [Delete] 70 replies 22:19, 17 July '07

I love this man, oh so much. I've been playing "ruby's arms" off Asylum Years over and over again. The disney strings are fantastic. I like his croaky voice ballads the best, but his weird stuff is also fantastic. HE's brillant.
So, tom waits... best album?

But also, hes a MASSIVE COCKFACE, cos he has a stupid "minimalist" website.

http://www.tomwaits.com/

cock.

    • and

i think the poor guy's way too old to know what the internet is, he seems to only function in good music and being a weirdo

      • He makes me want to smoke 60 a day

so when im 19 i can go up to little kids at the street and growl at them till they cry.
        FUCK YEAH!

  • Yeah, an attractive resource

with complete discography and lyrics wouldn't go amiss.

  • I like the modern stuff best

the production is amazing, so many great sounds on there. He's probably the worst bit, his band are amaaazing

i.e Orphans, and Real Gone, Mule Variations etc

  • Personally

I think he is a better writer than artist.

    fullerov | 17 Jul '07, 22:25 | X
  • i definitely prefer the weird stuff to the ballads

Rain Dogs is easily the best

And his more recent albums, whilst good, are nowhere near his primetime efforts (i've not heard the recent 3 disc btw)

    • orphans

      is goooooooooooooood

      50-Pence @smezzer | 17 Jul '07, 22:32 | X
      • Yeah, it is.

Bawlers (the "ballads" cd) is my favourite. He has that chord progression he uses a lot where it plays a major chord, then the bass note moves up a semitone, then it moves to a minor chord two semitones up from the original major chord. I dont know how to speak music language, but anyway.

He uses it a lot, and its brilliant, and practically "his".

        yes_ @50-Pence | 17 Jul '07, 22:34 | X
  • Rain Dogs is best.

Lots of his best songs combined with nutty instrumentation. Somehow manages to seem more true to his blues / jazz routes than his earlier stuff in spite of (because of?) its general bizareness.

apart from night on earth which doesn't hang together so well for me. He means everything to me, in terms of music. I can't think of anyone with a better voice, truly. And his versions are almost always the definitive ones. And let's not get started on the over-rated debacle.

is The Heart Of Saturday Night then I'd probably make a comp from all the other albums. At the recent St Jude's/Thomas Truax gig they were playing The Heart Of Saturday Night over the PA prior to the bands and it was great to hear it in that enviroment, bones_howe, I'm sure you would have approved

    • small change is great

in the cd i have the jane meadows line on the title track has been overdubbed, but on asylum years it's as was recorded. Also on asylum years for small change if you turn it up you can hear an 'echo' of the song (I'm presuming it's what the mic picked up from his headphones while he was in the booth). Hmm yawnsome from me there, soz.
