I just ordered this. Is it really all it's cracked up to be?
so much so that some bastard stole my 12" ages ago and wont give it back :-(
and hated it. I played it again and loved it. I guess it's my definition of a "grower".
In fact, I recently played it (and loved it) but was thinking he was a band that just got lucky.
Like it was just a bunch of noodling shouty nonsense ... that somehow by the mysteries of the universe was brilliant that had nothing to do with the band themselves.
i loved it first time i heard it. do i win a prize?
are way cooler than me. The effects of *that* prize aren't as immediate as a shiny new car, but it's longer lasting. So you've got that going for ya!
washers good though
Even if you hate it, it's a record you *have* to own. It's mandatory. Your indie cred is at stake. ;)
and washer get stuck in my head regularly.
the best "post-rock" album i've heard, which puts it a tiny notch above Spirit of Eden, a couple of notches above "Lift Yr Skinny Fists.." and a country mile above anything in the Mogwai canon (Tortoise albums are exempt)
basically, its rules big time
but Ocean Songs still wins :D
minus 10 indie points for me
well thats if you class them as post-rock. some people do. so they win.
I like it a lot. I've never been a big fan of violins though.
becomes worryling addictive
I also like Explosions In The Sky. I like post rock a bit too much rly.
you should cream yourself over Spiderland then
I was hoping for something a bit more exciting.
made me think they'd be incredibly boring live
i think it's excellent, but for me it doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the 'post rock' bands. there's something uniquely sinister about it, and it doesn't rely on the reverb/delay twinkle followed by the big overblown musical 'splurge' dynamic that make a lot of post rock bands sound exciting at first but sort of predictable and cliched with repeated listenings and in context with all the other bands with the same tag.
please buy my spare ticket to see them play it in august, as i want to go to glasgow to see them there instead. thanks!
...rank this as one of my top 5 albums of all time...
very good in a wonderfully non obvious way.
the recently reissued For Carnation compilation is also good.
Get that NOW.
NOW, YOU FUCK!
the drum sound is teh awesomeness.
it is not all its cracked up to be
a classic, 10/10 record - there aren't many of them, BUT it will never have the impact now it would have done if you hadn't heard all the bands that have copied them.
Good Morning Captain is the greatest way to end a record that I have heard. The last minute and a half makes me want to smash things and hide under the bed, at the same time. Never gets old.
I just contradict myself? Wait, no.
I really need to have a listen to this.
but still very good.
Much more minimal. It seems to take exactly the same route as Spiderland, building slowly, down to the epic ending, but everything is quieter, more grown up somehow. Don't have too high an expectation and you'll adore it. It's taken me years to really "get" it, if I can say that without sounding like an arse.
