Primal Scream Xtrmntr tour at Newcastle Uni.Ouch!
at the Brudenell in Leeds or maybe Sunn0))) at the Cockpit.
the Bradford Rio. Yowzer.
Birmingham Hummingbird. And J lent his guitar against the amp when walking off at the end. Cue a thousand people hastily making for the exit
Manchester Academy 1995
i can remember having my senses thoroughly numbed by them on more than one occasion at newcastle city hall
years ago. Afterwards a friend was told by a doctor never to go to a live gig again, or he would risk totally losing his hearing.
compulsion..fisrt ever mention on dis methinks
Compulsion wrote Underground Ernie for CBBC. Rock!
there was even threads about Compulsion a long time ago...
qotsa at the uni in manchester or surprisingly the prodigy at the apollo in manchester, i was deaf for weeks after both of them
oh and mogwai @ the L2 in liverpool
but i think that being on the front row for josh pearson in portsmouth last month has damaged my hearing quite a bit...
we were right by the front as well which was a bit of a mistake. We got a set list though, oh and permanently damaged hearing most probably.
Cambridge Junction, October 1999. Officially the loudest gig they've ever had there. My ears rang for a week.
i only got to see them twice, i did get my cds signed by them though :) plus we got a whole box of 'ice' cds after their night n day gig. they were cds of sum guy from godflesh's new band who supported
One of the greatest gigs I've seen, although it was the last tour they did and Carl Crack wasn't there as he'd tried to throw himself out of a plane a few days before. They set up his guitar onstage anyway, in his honour.
i used to love atari teenage riot, that gig sounds ace
crack jsut stood there twitchin with his hood up haha and then at reading he was jumping round like a maniac haha quite a contrast!
last year was pretty deafening.
Luckily I was wearing earplugs at ATP last year!
Fuck Buttons last night
Some band at Artrocker
Ear shreddingly loud so you wince and think your hearing might be getting danaged.
Or that time at FWD when it was plasticians birthday so they cranked up the system to stupid levels. There was a point at which I thought i'd been blinded by bass.
Fuck me. They had all these huge amps and they played in someones living room, with everything turned up so high you couldn't even hear the drumkit. For days my hearing was distorted and fuzzy.
with a sore ear for a week!
someone else i know saw MBV when she was 16, and she's had tinnitus ever since.
i couldn't hear for 3 days afterwards
I was litreally shaking on the bus afterwards
incredibly loud to the point where it was actually painful (probably the only gig my eardrums have truly hurt at)
Mogwai at the Zodiac many years ago was also horribly loud. I see someone else said this but I don't know if it was the same gig. This was Young Team era.
and Mint 400 - Tunbridge Wells Forum. Was a warm up for Phoenix in 1993. I couldn't hear properly for two weeks thanks to the Family Cat's three guitar attack.
probably Slowdive + Cranes at the Garage back in about 94
was an amazing show. so stupidly loud, ears ringing for days.
in cardiff clwb ifor bach.
OR, lightning bolt at the point, in cardiff.
i couldn't hear properly for about four days after each.
they were both pretty loud, though aids wolf last december was even LOUDER. the worst is really loud snarey drumming like drumize :(
I don't think he realised that he was only playing to 15 people in a venue the size of a small living room.
Wolf Eyes at the Electric Ballroom supporting Lightning Bolt. My ears were actually hurting and people were turning away from the stage covering their ears.
Sunn O))) didn't seem that loud whilst they were playing but for a couple of days afterwards my whole heard hurt
...at the Wheatsheaf in Oxford. Even with ear plugs at the back of the room it was still painful!
I was near the fron and it wasn't that loud. One of the weirdest nights of my life though...
Lightning Bolt wins!
wolf eyes followed and sounded kinda tame in comparison
at the pompey guildhall in 2005. had ringing ears for 2 weeks after that.
and then of course theres lightning bolt! the only band i wear ear plugs for..
Last year sometime.
in the anson rooms, bristol in 2001. i stood right near the stack... very very foolish
permanent after watching blood brothers...but i think i had an ear infection at the time :(
liverpool planet x
comes pretty close though
1000 people with their fingers in ears
their sound sucks so badly!
Although if it was 87ish, it wasn't planet x. I seem to remember it was a club on Bold Street. The bar staff wore ear defenders.
soundgarden (also the hottest gig, ew sweaty men...)
at Bristol Fleece. I've had permanent tinnitus ever since.
Hammersmith Apollo, 2005. They truly are the metal gods.
with tinitus last year, this thread has reminded me that it was probably thr Priest gig that finally did it. Wear your ear plugs kids, sod looking cool. I'll be the old bloke at the LIARS gig tonight with the fluorescent sponge in my ears.
missed the start of the set. Walking into the venue was like being hit in the ear with a sledge-hammer.
lightning bolt @ luminaire = pelican @ underword = part chimp, always
like a wall of noise.
Mighty Mighty Bosstones a few years ago, damaged the hearing in my right ear.
Seeing The Deftones in such a small venue just gives me goosepimples thinking about it.God I miss the Riverside.Saw Smashing Pumpkins there.Tremendous.
I stood to the far right of stage with pint.Thats bad shit that is
most notably at cabaret voltaire.
trail of dead on a couple of occasions too, particularly the first time I saw them in 2000.
Lightning Bolt and MBV.
Although at MBV you could actually make out tunes and stuff so it wasn't as obvious that you'd be deaf the next day.
Hmm. That's going way back. I saw them too... but I don't remember them loud; I'm not saying they weren't just that I don't remember.
PS When I saw MBV it was with Dino jr. There was permanent damage fer sure.
methinks you guys must have a club named Cabaret Volaire. I get it.
was Mylo at Benicassim. I could feel my ribs cracking every time the bass pounded. And boy, the bass pounded far too often.
Incidentally, believe it or not, my quietest ever gig was Motorhead, Queens Of The Stone Age and Foo Fighters in Hyde Park last summer.
I actually wish that 'Hunted by a freak' was a bit louder.
damn you low ceiling!
also: Wolf Eyes at ATP last year and Prurient at the Luminaire (not that loud i guess but he enjoys his high frequencies so it physically hurt)
at the Garage did my ears in, and i had earplugs in
also Unsane at the Underworld, and Mastodon at Roskilde 2005, it was unbearable even with yee old earplugs in
i was at that gig, indeed it was one of the harshest things my ears have been exposed to!
but The Sunshine Republic at The Portland Arms the other week would be one of them. Fuck, they were relentless.
thought I was going to vomit and had to leave the room.
were very very very loud at Barden's Boudoir last year but that place is often a cavernous nuisance to my poor little ears.
coupla weeks ago.
Was right next to the stage though.
What are Lightning Bolt like? Would I like them?
utter inner-ear trauma, they was shit
in Manchester. It inspired purchase of earplugs. The pain!
Recently the Melvins at Primavera was arsequakingly loud. So much bass.
It felt like they were going to sink the site :D
Pukkelpop 2003, maybe it wasn't so loud but I was right next to the speakers. my ears buzzed for days...
Great gig, although a little silly to stand near the giant speakers, but it was such a small venue you couldn't get away from them!
Dinosaur Jr when I say them in Amsterdam, I remember thinking 'you wouldn't get away with this volume in UK'. Same band in Glasgow, much smaller venue. I seem to remember Leftfield being quite loud when I saw them
specifically when they played the 20 minutes of noise when I saw them as part of the JAMC Rollercoaster tour.
Second place goes to Eugenius, who weren't that loud a band, but someone arsed up the PA and had the bass turned up to the point that my insides very vibrating painfully.
when they supported Dinosaur Jr in Amsterdam, bass was so loud that if I opened my mouth my throat vibrated
sometime in 2003/4?
My ears still hurt.
That drowned in sound tsunami benefit thing from a few years back...Kano...that was fucking loud.
I had to go and stand in the corridor
at ULU. So loud that you couldn't really conciously 'hear' anything at all - it was painful to be in the same room as them, a sensation like being underwater. I was stone deaf for three days afterwards.
were a notoriously loud band.
Their gig at The Forum (or was it T&C then) usually makes lists of loudest gigs ever.
Even the music between bands had people going to the foyer to shout in their mates ears.
at Brixton a few years back. THeir drone-out at the end of MFMK made me feel sick and dizzy, and rendered me unable to say anything except 'fuck' for two hours.
Mars Volta and RHCP at Docklands in 2004 (I think). That was sickeningly loud. I'd never heard The Mars Volta before either, I'm sure that didn't help.
at the last ATP NBC
Every time I've seen them.
I wear earplugs and I still come away with ringing ears each time.
They make you need a poo.
an italian noise band. They had a massive stack of weird PA speakers that were stupidly loud. Plus the gig was in a tiny back room of a pub.
or Aufgehoben at venn.
Last time they were quiet, but the time before was perfick.
Loudest gig though (despite 19 mogwai shows) is def Dinosuar Jnr at Bristol Academy last year. Ridiculously loud.
The next day I had to go on some stupid training day and the first thing was sitting back to back with someone and explaining a picture to the other person to draw. I couldnt do it, too deaf, so had to keep turning round.
True, if uninteresting story.
at the Arches in Glasgow. not sure why it was so very loud but a friend who saw them at T in the Park one year said the same so perhaps it's their thing.
Also Mogwai - although i'm not sure which time I've seen them has been quite the loudest. Probably one of the shows in the Barras.
being pretty loud and bassy, i <3 the arches.
at Birmingham Sanctuary a few years back.
I had 3 day ear hum afterwards and I never get that
October All Over, that unsigned band from London who I *think* may have broken up now.
They played a night ages ago at The Infinity Club... and it was so so loud it was making me wanna puke. My ears were hurting with every note.
Maybe that's why I've got mild tinnitus now...
i think that was where i got tinnitus from.
Lightning Bolt @ Brudenell
i think i was stood close to the bass stack than the bassist. Couldnt hear for about 2 or 3 days after. felt like my head was in a distorted fish bowl.
I don't go to gigs there any more because of it.
Birmingham Academy Jan '03.
start gig > aaaaarrrgghhh > end gig
the other week at White Heat. Ears were ringing for 2 days afterwards.
was almost unbearable. i wont tell you who i saw.
with extremely extremely loud bass drum. Damaging.
the only time i've been worried about having permanent tinnitus was after seeing the cooper temple clause a few years ago, but i was next to the speakers. sunn0))) and om were both pretty loud at this years supersonic.
but Malajube gave me hardcore ringing in my ears for 5 days, so take your pick!
Reading Rivermead Centre 1997. It was so loud that I had to take two days off of school with earache and tirednss because the tinnitus was keeping me awake. Never heard another gig that scarily loud.
Reading Festival used to be stupidly loud, believe it or not. For the first few years I went from 1996 onwards you could really feel the bass and drums vibrating through the floor. It was like someone punching you in the chest every second. Made me feel quite ill after a while.
battles at mars volta atp downstairs late show. i was propped up against a speaker for some time, i felt the bass in my liver
The volume at their early gigs was ridiculous. I think it was part of the whole contempt thing...
Both very, very loud.
were so loud they made me feel physically sick, even wearing earplugs. mmmm.
At the Scala supporting Pelican, felt like my sternum was going to split. Runner up would be Noxagt, they made me ache for about a week.
manchester phoenix. also featuring Esquilax, Cutting Pink with knives, Barbarians, some other noise/improv band whose name I forget and some weedy little guy who pretty much just made feedback for ten minutes.
my ears hurt for two days.
