  • I'm with you on the Shins sort of

    .

    Jesus_Quintana | 30 Jun '07, 05:18 | X
  • Is that post

supposed to have any continuity to it?

    Zapsta | 30 Jun '07, 05:20 | X
  • Unicorns?

I've only got this rather sub-par ep... but not heard their supposedly great Who'll Cut Your Hair When Your Dead (?) album. So I'm gonna hold off on judgement.

NMH. Well, I certainly don't think Aeroplane is near as good as some. I'm just gonna say I see your point.

Deathcab. Agreed. I sorta put them in the whiney emo "I'm wish I was as good as Bright Eyes" category.

    Pavement. Uhm... FUCK YEAH!

The Shins. I got their albums... and I'd rather listen to them than say Belle & Sebastian... but not as much as New Pornos. I give them a mild thumbs up. The problem is when I play "indie" radio stations every band sound like weaker versions of The Shins which kinda lessens my feeling for them.

I'm a little unclear how you decided to lump these bands together. But fuck it, I should talk.

    oceanRain | 30 Jun '07, 05:53 | X
  • I like none of these bands.

    Event Pavement.
That said Pavement are without a doubt one of the great while the other bands are just derivative...

    lyle | 30 Jun '07, 06:45 | X
  • I also find The Unicorns

    tiresome.

Whenever my girlfriend puts them on the stereo I have to put my headphones in.

  • disagree on NMH big time

i would think you'd love them. really.

    death cab are superboring

the shins: not consistent and the latest album doesnt make me want to relisten to it much. but when good; lovely.

    Jamie_Summers | 30 Jun '07, 10:29 | X
  • I agree

I can't be bothered to give any reasons, but I dislike all of those bands.

    Placid_Casual | 30 Jun '07, 10:47 | X
    • I'd agee with the motion as posited.

NMH is ok, but not worth the cultist bumming that the album gets.

  • deathcab really sont have anything to do with NMH

    unicorns are quite nice
NMH are brilliant, even if i dont love them as much as some people
deathcab are occassioanally quite nice poprock
    pavement are pretty great

  • I agree with you on the Shins

they have one or two good songs, but apart from that they are pretty yawn-worthy and dull.

    Death Cab just suck.

    Omgz1one | 30 Jun '07, 11:35 | X
    • I'm with you.

Apart from on The Shins. I think their melodies are some of the best I'll ever hear. I think they have more than 'one or two' good songs.

      FunKargo @Omgz1one | 30 Jun '07, 12:57 | X
  • It's not like it's hard for you to just ignore those bands

unless you live in the USA. Their songs very rarely get played on the radio and TV. So, why bother with the the hate thread?

Personally I love Death Cab and the Shins. Between them they have a wealth of brilliant pop songs with great lyrics.

i like all of those bands. well, i'm not that keen on the unicorns and i found islands quite boring live when i saw them, but the rest are somewhere between alright and dead good.

    so there.

apart from pavement being amazing, because you can't really dispute this.

  • Not sure the link between Death Cab and NMH...

I'm quite surprised you don't like Neutral Milk Hotel actually.

Unicorns I don't love as much as everyone else, but they're still great.

I <3 Death Cab too. And The Shins are lovely.

              • You're sooooo wrong.

Pavement and Fog are fucking amazing pearly towers of music.
Everything in my original post is bland American blah music.

                John_Brainlove @dukebox | 30 Jun '07, 15:41 | X
                • im sooooo not.

when i saw fog live they were really shit, in a quite unremarkable and unimaginative college rock-way, listening to their myspace just now isnt doing much to change my opinion.

i dont mind pavement so much, theyre a bit overrated but what isnt i suppose?

i think its a bit unfair calling those other bands (none of whom bear that much resemblance to each other imo) boring college rock and not taking into account that you like even more boring college rock.

                  dukebox @John_Brainlove | 30 Jun '07, 15:54 | X
                  • that said

                    dukebox @dukebox | 30 Jun '07, 15:56 | X
                    • Mediocre is the perfect word for

                      DCFD, Shins and NMH.
Pavement's worst album shits on their absolute best.

And for why fog are actually genius, listen to 10th Avenue Freakout. Specifically, the closing trilogy, starting with The Poor Fella.

                      Turn it up loud.

but they used to be great. And I still love The Shins.

noticed your argumentative style seems (on the evidence of this thread) to always result in you saying 'it is because i said so'?

have you actually listened to in the aeroplane over the sea?

as far as i can tell (and id be delighted to be proved wrong) you havent actually given any reason why you dont like these bands other than their being 'college rock esque'.

furthermore, given that you like pedestrian rubbish like fog 'boring college rock esque' seems a touch unjust as a criticism really, people in glass houses and all that...

I just think Pavement (although I was instantly gratified!) is worth "acquiring" a taste for.

I'm sorta surprised at J_B not being in the Aeroplane-is-the-greatest-thing-ever camp. No, not "sorta", I am... totally surprised. ;)

          • You can't not like

            Neutral Milk Hotel!

I see no reason to lump them in with the shins and deathcab and the unicorns. they're all college rock bands of varying quality.

NMH, in terms of the sheer quality of the songwriting are unique. 'Aeroplane over the sea' is like the album equivalent of Mullholland drive and his melodies and singing are just so beautiful.

I would stake my reputation on betting that you've never listened to it properly as an album, on your own, start to finish, whilst not thinking about your laundry or other things - which anyone who loves it will tell is the way it works best.
I'd bet your main experience of them is hearing 'Holland 1945' in clubs on a semi-regular basis.

'aeroplane' is on a par with Ys lyrically in terms of sheer density and richness of language. i think it's utterly stunning.

you're a fool. if this forum had karma I'd smite you. your kudos rating is 0.

              • seriously though

have you really given NMH a proper chance and come to the conclusion you think it's a bit shit? obviously i don't know you personally, but it seems so unlikely.

          • the unicorns are the only band from that list i'd give 10/10

            • Yes

listen with your ears for once, god. Although I agree, with the exception of NMH who you can't lump in with the rest of em.

Even a cloth eared buffoon who doesn't really like them such as myself can hear that they are a lot better.

              • you can't lump the unicorns either

really, i can understand how the rest of those bands could be dull though.
