all could/have been called alt.country
whoever the fuck listed Big and Rich as alt country on wikipedia needs a slap
actually the rough trade country compilation is a really good start
they had a video screen in the country music hall of fame playing a video of gillian welch and dave rawlings playing I Wanna Sing That Rock And Roll live.
i was so happy :D
is actually the worst thing I ve ever heard
your eyeballs with my spurs.
I felt violated, it was called neko case and her boyfriends, is this different from neko case?
to nashville or heard country radio or watched CMT, you'd know just how alt. she is!
I'd recommend Gene Clark, but if you listen to him first, pretty much every other 'alt country' thing will sound like horseshit.
Don't listen to Gram Parsons. He sounds like horseshit regardless of what he's compared with
both of them rule. i didnt include them cos i assumed he meant modernish stuff.
i also saw the nudie suit from the cover The Gilded Palace Of Sin at the hall of fame and did a tiny weewee of excitement.
and then i turned the corner and saw the man in black's suit of...black. and it turned into a torrent.
The difference between Gene and Gram for me is that I don't believe Gram Parsons...
Sadly lots of modern alt country acts have followed that fake emotion path trodden by him, rather than being emotionally honest
of artifice there yeh, but the songs are so good that it works well a lot of the time. in fact most of his songs are better when covered...
I certainly have never felt that he was faking any emotion.
Besides the songs are good enough to stand by themselves.
I think i'll start with the Rough Trade compilation and take it from there.
I'll go back to lurking now. Cheerio.
but yes, thats a great compilation, although check out the ones i listed that arent on it too!
Which album should one start with? I love the stuff she did with Ryan Adams, and his cover of her song Revelator is bloody great.
its better than anything ryan adams will ever do.
the whiskeytown records lyle? you might like them more than his solo stuff.
maybe I should try again now...
