People of Oxford

matthewsimpson1 [Edit] [Delete] 13 replies 15:36, 28 June '07

I like Oxford, and I'd very much like to try and get my band a gig there. Does anyone know of any promoters who put good nights on in Oxford? From my research I have found these venues;

Jericho Tavern
The Cellar
The Port Mahon

Does anyone have any experience in these venues? Anything would be a great help.

    • cool

      We like small; easier to fill :-)

      They have a website but it seems like most of the gigs there are dance/trance etc. I shall dig a bit deeper. Oh and thanks for the help

  • The Bullingdon arms?

    No idea what the jerico is like for gigs since it's been poshed up, cellar did used to be mainly dancy stuff but it does do other gigs.
    I'm sure there's another but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called, if i remember I'll post again.

  • We've been trying to do the same

    We might be sorting something out with The Rock Of Travolta which would be fun :) Anyway, try speaking to Jimmy at the Cellar.

  • Don't bother with the Jericho...

    ...The Cellar, The Wheatsheaf and the Port Mahon are the best places to play. The Port is tiny (pushing it to get 100 in). The Wheatsheaf is a bit bigger and has an amazing sound system for a venue its size (150+). The Cellar is the biggest of the small venues I think (200+).

    I think the myspace is something like www.myspace.com/thecellaroxford . They have gigs there every Thursday night and have started doing them on occasional Saturdays as well.

    • Thanks guys and girls

      This great. I've emailed the cellar and I'll phone the other venues later. I'm also going to try and get us something in Brighton so if you have any tips for there it'd be great too. Oh and London, but we all know what a minefield that one is :-)

    • What's wrong with the Jericho, Stu?

      It's not that bad in there, and the last couple of times I've been down there's been a really good crowd. Last night the place was basically sold out apparently

    One place I would recommend is The Cellars in Eastley. Contact Ian at Stiff promotions to enquire about gigs;

    www.stiffpromotions.co.uk

    Quite a small venue but good sound and Ian is a cheese-tastic legend! Really nice guy who actually promotes his nights, which is a bit of a novelty around here.

    • Eastney

      I meant Eastney in Southsea, Portsmouth.

  • at the cellar

    jimmy evil

    at the port mahon, pindrop

    Cellar is great, port mahon is OK but tiny (and is normally seated). Jericho is pants

    There is also the Wheatsheaf, which is pretty good
