Advice please

smallpox_champion [Edit] [Delete] 23 replies 22:02, 20 March '05
Ok I have money to spend and so what should I buy , the new QOTSA album (which I think is released tomorrow), Squarepusher - Music is rotted one note, a Bill Hicks DVD, Shellac - At action park or Les georges leningrad - Sur les traces de black eskimo. I want them all but I'd like to hear what you all have to say.

            ha
i got the qotsa and evens today.
the qotsa seemed actually pretty crappy. whereas normally they have a certain wit, here they seem to be taking the piss.
but little sister has grown on me a lot, so maybe therest will.
the evens is great simply cos she can make a drum kit sound big enough to play on its own.

but i also got why?'s Early Whitney EP, which i prefer to both.

  • Re: Advice please

get the bill hicks one with the 30 min set on it, it's the funniest thing i've ever seen, and very cheap

      • Re: Advice please

I find Bill Hicks slightly over-rated. Don't get me wrong now, he was insanely funny, it just seems that it's 'cool' to like him (particularly if your into 'alternative' music), in the same way it's cool to like Donnie Darko.

My mate bought a Richard Prior DVD the other week and it's really really funny. Chris Rock's Bigger And Blacker is ace in bits, but the cultural references go over my head sometimes. What the hell is Robutusin???

Peter Kaye's Top Of The Tower is possibly one of the funniest things i've ever seen. Lee Evans has some good stuff as well.

Queens of the Stone Age are completely rubbish. That guy simply has no singing voice, and all their songs are totally bland bar about 2. I don't get their appeal in the slightest. Whereas... BILL HICKS! He's a world-altering genius. A peek into his world can change the way you think.

Since when did vocalists have to have good singing voices?!

            • Re: Advice please

              i don't mean technically good.
i mean good as in, not boring.
good as in ... with a bit of character, personality, passion, whatever it is that makes a vocalist stand out. Josh Homme only seems to sing the same few notes on every song, in exactly the same way. No variation. His range his tiny. He doesn't ever seem to be feeling anything really. It's bland. It's dead. It's shit.

          • Re: Advice please

bill hicks is entertainment and nothing more
nothing wrong with that - that was his job, and he could be incredibly funny.
but if you actually take what he says seriously, and dont see the gaping holes in his arguments, then i worry for you.
