I've only heard the Nights Temper EP, but just spotted that the new album has leaked too.
The EP is a preview, or something, though, so seems as good a place as any to start. Chemistry is interesting, but a mess; it's drum-heavy, string-soaked, and full of dirty guitar solos and riffs (this is said to be Josh Homme's work? Sounds like he wasn't making much of an effort..). Morning Rage is a sleepwalk; apparantly Lavelle does some singing on this, but I can't pick him out from the guest vocalist (guy from The Cult, I think? Might be getting mixed up now.). Persons & Machinery features the dude from Autolux. It is boring.
Mayday, however, is pretty awesome. But for one reason alone: the girl off the The Duke Spirit does the vocals. She's like a.. less irritating Kate Nash. The song itself is a pretty by-the-numbers dirty rock thing.
So yes. It's pretty yough to see Lavelle's hip hop roots in any of this. Or even much evidence that he much of anything to do other than adding a few perfunctory beats'n strings; apart from phone up his mates and get them into the studio of course.
But it has made me want to check out Duke Spirit. S'not all bad is it then?
