Mr authority i find it extremely hard to say why i like certain music.

I find Mr Oberst's music incredibly beautiful, I dont find it in the least depressing.

  • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

connor is an aquired taste, however having said that i'd also say that his work is actually quite varied musically and he can certainly write a tune. Try lover i dont have to love off lifted, thats definately got a decent tune.

Also may be worth checking out the despericados which is connor's heavier band, from looking at your ratings you dont seem to like acoustic stuff (only a guess, sorry if im wrong) so that might be a better fit for you.

It's quite funny this in a way, i've been listening to bright eyes pretty much constantly for the last few days (not the new albums dont have them yet, skint)

    • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

so i've got "digital ash...". the first Bright Eyes album i have but probably not good considering its not his usual stuff. is it recommended to get "I'm wide awake..."? or should i go back in time to the earlier records?

which is better "fevers and mirrors" or "lifted..."?

this post is aimed at nobody in particular...

          I think 'Lifted' is great.

      • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

Its all subjective, but from what i gather im wide awake is the best encapsulation of connors acoustic country stuff. So in a way if you want to explore 'typical' connor it'd be a good place to start. His other albums are eclectic, but that isnt a bad thing.

I would recomend that you dont start with letting off the happiness unless you like lo-fi (this is hard to do, rate some bands it'd make it a bit easier to offer advice).

Lifted is quite self indulgent (for connor so read very self indulgent) but you avoid fevers and mirrors 'radio interview' which might put you off despite the rest of album being very good.

Erm yeah hope that helps, sorry i havent really said you should definately go for that one.

I love that song (Love I don't have to love), am listening to it right now in fact. I love the lyrics, and the overall feel, it's kind of slutty in a good way but sweet at the same time.

      • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

Yeah its really good, bit confused about it at the moment due to a recent event that im not going in to detail about, but lets just say that it soundtracked a moment and i only realised the absolute inappropiateness later.

        • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

hmmm...yeah i might get "fevers..." first then.
i have the impression that "digital ash..." is an experimental side to his music but i might be wrong.
nevertheless its a very good record overall even though i think it doesnt thread too well at times.
          its brave.
the last track "lucky/easy/free" is excellent.

Gold Mine Gutted and Down in a Rabbit Hole are brilliant.

im going to have to go and buy digital ash and wide awake tomorrow, all this talk of bright eyes is really tempting me.

              • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

                Do!!

I played Wide Awake a lot at first. Now i'm all about the Digital Ash.

  • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

I can see why he might be an acquired taste, but 'tuneless' is pretty far off the mark. I bought I'm Wide Awake about ten days ago and have been listening to it on heavy rotation since. I'm also looking to pick up some of his earlier stuff, having downloaded some stuff I'm torn between Lifted and Fevers. Lifted seems to have a reputaiton as a stronger album but the two songs I've heard from Fevers (Haligh and Something Vague) are fucking mindblowing.

Get Desperacidos, its his trail-of-dead come pop side project, and the best album I reckon he's done period.

      • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

btw, the desperacidos album is called 'read music speak spanish'

Fevers and mirrors good, but it's partly what put me off him for ages, a little indulgent, song to pass the time is beautiful though,

Lifted's fairly solid, prob my fav album of his as 'Brig

        • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

ht Eyes', (sorry, my pc is working about as efficiently as my brain today),

Letting off the happiness might be worth getting instead of fevers too, got a couple of stunning tunes,

collection of songs is to be bought after you've got all the others, and if you're desperate to hear more, not a good way of 'getting into' him, which is fair enough, given he was 14-17 when recording them

        • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

i always feel that lifted has the odd spot of filler that just stops it being perfect ... but it is fantastic.
          desperacidos are great too

  • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

fevers and mirrors is his best album I dont know why people are put off by the interview its funny, hes mocking his pretentiousness

"radio: Now you mentioned empathy for others. Would you say that that motivates you to make the music that you make?

Connor: No, not really. It’s more a need for sympathy. I want people to feel sorry for me....When I was a kid I used to carry a safety pin around with me every where I went in my pocket, and when people weren’t paying enough attention to me, I’d dig it into my arm until I started crying "

=funny, its not not even him talking its todd from the faint, connors the one taking the piss in the background saying " saddle creek fuckin records with their fuckin new wave groups and ethereal sad, sad folk..."

A song to pass the time is probably my favourite ever song

Tim if i looked at your profile i am sure i would find stuff i hated. I dont care that you hate Bright Eyes. I like them though.

        • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

Tim, what is it that you dislike about Bright Eyes?
I don't particularly like him, but he isn't crap. he is actually quite a talented songwriter.

          At least justify your opinion.

        • Re: the awful sweetness of escaping sweat

I just want to clarify that i got the irony, but i know people who heard fevers and mirrors first and just couldnt get past that.

You could also argue that such humour is possibly out of place on a bright eyes album given the tone of the music.

Still either way, all it actually involves is learning to use the track skip button if you have fevers on cd.

Erm, given where this has ended up i should add that im talking about the 'interview' on fevers and mirrors.
