because of the mastering. yeah, THAT'S why they're unlistenable.
can we get the first violent femmes album remastered, please? i have to double the volume to hear the thing.
was it not re-released quite recently in a 2-disc jobby (Violent Femmes that is)? Sounds pretty good to these ears
well someone obviously sensed my anger. i'll be getting that then.
The album sounds fantastic, and there are some great bonus tracks - there's a live version of Add It Up which is particularly brilliant.
Great sleevenotes too *nods*
My vinyl version sound spiffing
what is this bollox?
I haven't read this, but I would guess and probably be right if I said it was to do with the level of compression on that and other albums of late.
Seriously, it is so loud, some tracks on it actually are unlistenable.
Apparently it was started off in this country by Oasis and continues to this day to the effect that people will listen to Arctic Monkeys first record and think it sounds brutal, when to others it'll just sound fuzzy, indistinct and devoid of character and dynamics.
Bowie's mix was better. Every one dissed it and then Iggy re-did it and now it's obvious! Bowie's was better.
but doesn't it take something away from the *ahem* raw power of the album? Bowie's hardly known as the greatest bringer of 'the rock'
Shall I post this article again? It seems I shall:
despite the lolarious examples
his cd library anyway.
A solid block of green on Cool Edit Pro.
It sounds FREAKIN' AWESOME though.
There are "creative" uses of mastering, and making things sound loud all the time is fair enough for styles of music where everything is *meant* to be loud all the time. But probably I don't like those styles of music!
Trut. I've got Arcarsenal on a custom playlist at the moment. I'm considering taking it off because it's so much louder than the tracks that come after it.
Another annoying thing about this: Tracks by very, very violent bands like Atheist, who just happened to have the misfortune to be around in the early 90s, now sound weak and flavourless next to more recent artists.
i don't think so.
you accept that you like them then its time you ended everything.
i don't really understand why you would want to make everything really loud tho?
it seems like a crazy situation to me
why do you want the whole thing peaking and cutting down on sound quality?
i guess once it starts you have to follow suit - but its pretty nuts
Rhcp are good. The newest album's a load of shite, though. There's much worse stuff, get over it.
they are possibly the worst band i've ever heard. i've nothing to get over. thanks though!
so am I to understand that Californication sounded like a huge steaming pile of old man's stodgy dung because THE MAN went and made it "too loud"?
find a new hobby!
in the past few years. There's one which compiles a top ten of the best and worst SOUNDING records which is quite illuminating
Oh, thank fuck. I've been saying that about Bloc Party since forever.
these are the sort of articles which cemented Stylus as my favourite music site
those are the ones I was mumbling about
...is definitely top when it comes to features
i had a massively deep and intricate essay on this topic which i'd almost finished writing, but then i accidentally clicked the abandon reply button. And i sure as fuck aint writing it again
guess you'll just have to imagine it's brilliance
there were a lot of spelling errors and some serious issues with syntax. But I agree: Jet's first album WAS the best sounding record of the noughties.
whilst Get Born is a masterclass in record production (as well as being unmatched and unprecedented musically), their second album Shine On blows it out of the water. The dynamics, the texture, the space between the instruments... just absolutely mindblowing
i really don't know where they can go from there
Their drummer can use a different beat!
he's already used every mathematically possible drum beat (as well as many impossible ones). You're probably just too much of a philistine to hear any of them
try listening again. I promise, it'll change your life
quite the contrary. Their last effort was rather like being forced to drink several industrial sized canisters of syrup
at major volume earlier today and enjoying it. Obviously I know nothing about music, eh.
