And were really really great!!!! Hurrah!
on others i was a bit underwhelmed, sadly (even after I moved to a place where the sound was much better than previous)
And the penultimate track that I know well but don't know the name of actually seemed... LIVE!!
But otherwise the backing tracks made it seem more like Karaoke. Where was the edge? Where was the danger?
...and I think the 'live' instruments could/should have been louder in the mix... but I just don't think they're about "danger" anymore - for me, they're more about lush blankets of sound that wrap around you... and for the 3 of them to achieve this, they require backing tracks.
I usually really dislike the use of backing tracks in 'guitar bands' but with Blonde Redhead I felt it worked well. Sometimes the mix wasn't to my tatse and certain songs sounded flat because of this (I'd level that at Equus), but for me, the strength of the songs far outweighed these problems.
I most certainly had shivers down my spine for a good proportion of their set.
However, I can totally appreciate where you people are coming from - it really wasn't raw and it wasn't dangerous. I guess I wasn't looking for that.
but often it was actually so subtle that really all the track did was stop them from changing the pace or structure of the song. That seemed a bit pointless to me.
(not last night, because I wasn't there, but previously) is that it often includes the bass. For some reason - perhaps because the bassline is such an important part of the rhythmic feel of a band - I find that infects the whole performance with pre-recorded feel.
but the manics played Let Robeson Sing!
so that's an AUTOMATIC FAULT and a failure.
well they did do die in the summertime and faster and this is yesterday so that wuz gd.
so all round this seems to be a gash venue, yes? not dared go there since it was rebranded because every show there seems to have gash reviews here, it's like the venue sucks the atmosphere out of every show or something.
I've ever been to sleep during a show was at Blonde Redhead in the Scala.
Blonde Redhead, Low, Shellac, Explosions in the Sky, !!!.
And one where the sound and atmosphere were rubbish - TV on the Radio.
I have no problem with Koko - but I think I'm in the minority!
Only other bad experience I've had there was with Guillemotts, and I've been there plenty of times
Really quite a boring show. Too much from the newer records, not enough from the older ones - a real shame.
they still look good though.
don't they!! Fine choice of clothes and boots...
eloise was immense
got my rocks off...
because IANJ DID NOT PICK UP HIS PHONE
but they were really good, in a way I kind of got lost in the boringness and drifted a bit, loved it.
so sorry dude... I will punish myself for this disgrace and am currently self-flagellating...
seriously, hope you enjoyed.
