General gripe/overview about Dot-to-Dot

Alex_b [Edit] [Delete] 97 replies 14:30, 28 May '07

I have arisen and recovered!
Couple of dissapointing things that i know i should have totally expected and pissed me off;
1) That queue outside of rock city, particularly the some of the absolute cunts who were in it.

2) a conversation overheard in the toilets at trent union; "new rave, man, that shits dead, i wanna see new new romantics..." without a hint of irony, i might add. JUST GO SHOVE YOUR HEAD BACK UP YOUR ARSE MATE!

3) incessant myspace sponsorship, particularly glowsticks. NO.

4) Stealth that night. I probably got raped three times and didnt notice it for the sheer amount of people, and i was just trying to find my friends. Also queuing outside for twenty minutes to be faced with the prospect of hot club de paris, or chromeo, also being dismayed at the amount of people watching them.

Aside from that Blonde Redhead and Talibam! were ace, as wer AIH and annuals. Apologies to Jordan for blanking (?) him and also i think i was stood literally about two feet away from Hell85 and Sadpunk and didnt say anything for some irrational fear i had of confirming scary stalker status in my mind.

  • hot club de paris are ace. you suck. sorry.

annuals are good too though. so its good you saw them.

are you sure the guy wasnt being ironic? can people really say the phrase 'new new romantic' in seriousness? really?

  • Im starting to dislike foals,

if only for their sucess and fanbase. I was watching talibam, or possibly annuals.

    • Shit, but nice people

i got into a drunken conversation with the lead singer last september, lovely bloke. Shame they have only about two tunes worth any effort.

      Alex_b @Glen_Chap | 28 May '07, 14:54 | X
    • I know its awful! but seeing kids in flourescent legwamers

ranting about a band you quite like is always disheartening.

I sent you a drunken text about TBFB. They were good and all but i couldnt get into it because i hadnt heard them before so i felt a bit lost. Other than that, yes quite rocking.

            • Were all sick of new rave

and a bit of shoegaze wouldnt go amiss. Something i felt blonde redhead confirmed.

              • yeh, definately

it was suprising to see some of the youngsters really getting into songs like 'sbsf' and '23', promising.

about 30 people saw nova saints though, which was very dissapointing. still, they put on a cracking performance

                • Twas an ace day

Scout Niblett was superfun. Sounding more like Nirvana every day though....

Nova Saints were ok, certainly better than the Hard-Fi covers band on before them

          • All i could hear was

'my name is chro-me-o' being shouted over and over again to the most irritating beat known to man which was enough for me to call it hammer time and go home.

                • yeah, i know

but i realised its a bit silly to get pent up about fans of bands you like... just as its stupid to like a band on the basis of the reaction a crowd gives. In my book thats a bonus, rather than a measurement.

                  • Had a great time

Couldn't believe the lack of peeps for Blonde Redhead... Ace stuff from both them and Talibam!

Fucked off that queue for Rescue rooms later on and retired to a local boozer instead!

Did feel a bit of a twat for forgetting my baseball cap, crap hoodie, massive backpack and stupid neon coloured chequerboard t shirt

                    andrewfartwasher | 28 May '07, 19:31 | X
                    • I thought Chromeo

were pretty ace fun, though it was (predictably) rammed for it. What I got to see (in the midst of sheperding tour managers and artists around) at Trent was some good stuff, especially Blonde Redhead, Annuals, Arcitecture in Helsinki and Fanfarlo. Liked what I saw of Love ends disaster and the thermals were quite fun.

Overall another great dot to dot from what most people I know (who actually got to see the fest properly,) said.

can largely be a disgusting pit of squalor on most occasions. It also has THE worst sound system i have ever heard.

                    • the sound system isnt bad

well at least its not bad for what its designed for, Dance music. In fact it's one of the best in the country apparently.

But for most live bands, unless they're bleep heavy, its bad yes.

                  • The Bristol one was fine

didn't have to queue for wristbands, didn't have to queue to get in anywhere at all actually. There were some knobbers in the crowds, but that's what you get when you get people on the piss since 2pm on a Saturday/Bank Holiday weekend.

There weren't as many 'names' at Bristol though I guess.

Highlights: Fanfarlo and Architecture in Helsinki. AiH were loads better than I thought they'd be actually, just ace. I've had Frenchy I'm Faking stuck in my head ever since.

I got bored of Annuals after a few songs.

Also, The Fiddlers in Bristol is a bonkers venue. It's like a working men's club tacked on to a barn.

                  • my 'little' d2d nottingham review:

We started off by getting my wristband at the Social, thereby avoiding the daft long queues at Rock City, and headed upstairs to see Grave Architects jovially rapping about how lovely it is to ride a bike.

Suitably bemused, I then(following my 'if in doubt see the band with the daftest name' approach) wandered up to the Rescue Rooms to see "Yo Chomsky!". Before their opening song is even halfway through there is one word screaming through my brain: Ritalin. Ritalin Ritalin Ritalin! Tons of the stuff, that's what Yo Chomsky's skinny twelve year old frontman desperately needs. To be honest I couldn't really tell you whether the songs were any good, so offput was I by his hyperactive antics. Oddly enough, the rest of the band were pretty much motionless throughout.

Next up was Ratty Rat Rat. Or rather, they should have been, but they didn't turn up so, downhearted, I wandered round the corner to see the "weird-rock" of Ox.Eagle.Lion.Man. Great they were too. Daft hair and good tunes all wrapped up in a kooky little box.

One of the many problems of going to festivals with girls (especially veggie girls) is that they dont regard burgervan ratburgers as suitable nourishment. So Wagamamas robbed me of the opportunity to see anything else until 6pm, which was Sky Larkin time at the Social.

And Sky Larkin really are lovely. Everyone in the whole of Leeds love them. If you could marry a band, then they are the band that you'd want to take home to meet your mum. They sing happy catchy little songs and always have a smile to share.

Except today they're busy having a nervous breakdown. Having left their synth in Leeds the poor blighters are forced to present a "b-sides and rarities" set (ie the only songs that dont use keyboards). They gamely give it all a good go though , even attempting a bit of 'air-syth', which to my admittedly untutored ear sounded at least as good as any air guitar ever has.

We hang around in the Social to hear the angelic acoustic ballads of Emmy the Great. After 30 minutes it is apparent that she should really be called "Emmy the very good singer but generally a bit dull and unoriginal". Presumably though that doesn't fit quite so well on the flyers.

Next up is Brainlove's bosom-buddy Napoleon iiird playing, rather bizarely, in a tea shop. Nappy provides us with a proper old-school set, just like he used to do back in the old days. Yes, that's right, he forgot his setlist and spent half the gig punching, kicking and swearing at his rickety old reel-to-reel tape player. Truly wonderful stuff!

A brief swim through the torrential rain engulfing Nottingham later, we arrive at Rock City for the Dykeenies. Lamacq apparently likes 'em, which usally means that I'll like them too. And, despite their lead singer failing to deliver on his promise to buy "everyone here a drink", their energetic indie leaves with a smile on my face. They've got some good tunes and could almost certainly easily have The Maccabees in a fight.

Dragged upstairs to see Kano eventually perform the opening of a very very uninspiring set, I join the exodus heading back downstairs to see that Lethal Bizzle have turned the Rock City basement into one big slightly daft party. The whole place is bouncing along to House of Pain samples and engaging in left side/right side "lets see who can Bizzle-Bizzle loudest" games. If there had been jelly and ice-cream and a pin the tail on the donkey competition then this really would have been the best party ever.

All Bizzled out I head back upstairs to see if The Cribs have got any better since last time I saw them. They really haven't, and I spend most of the gig trying to work out exactly how it is such a thoroughly mediocre band have become so successful. Answers on a postcard please.

After rounding the evening off with some Grimewatch at The Social I head home, pausing only to look at the daftlong queues outside Stealth and conclude that bed is definitely a better option than queuing up for hours in the rain.

Overall, a good fun day, and I really must thank Myspace for providing the Rock City crowd with plenty of glowsticks to throw at Kano and The Cribs. Long live the new rave revolution!

i went with two people to see napoleon iiird. three people on here have also said they have seen him. there were no more than 40-50 people watching him. this means that with my review of the album that about 260% of people in the room were there cos of me bigging him up.

                      review shortly

Some of us have already seen Napoleon IIIrd twice this year already in Notts! There were only about FUCK ALL people at Stealth a month or so ago I recall.

I didn't bother seeing them again because of wanting to see AiH and having spoken to one of Napoleon IIIrd earlier and her having said she was going to see AiH...it removed the sense that I really should.

was really disappointed with architecture in helsinki, they were good. but (i quote my friend) 'the sound quality is like you are listening to an mp3 from my laptop speakers' and to be honest it was not a good sound system. was that the same all the day in trent downstairs?
goodbooks were really good, stealth was far too busy between 1 and 2ish. Everyone wanted to be in stealth and rescued main was pretty much empty.
dancing was good. not as good as last year, but the weather was far nice last time.

                    • i didnt get to see much of aih

but the sound was great in trent all-day especially for blonde redhead at the end. Cause of aih's aray of instruments though it's difficult to get them sounding right at a festival.

                  • you should've said hi

I had a great day!! The queing at the start was a bit shit, but as soon as that was out of the way it was all good!

Architecture in Helsinki and Blonde Redhead were the two best performances, Annuals were probably the worst.

                    • Yeah great day.

Had an absolute shocker getting there as my early train from St Pancras was rammed. Then the weather served to dampen everyones spirits (how fucking horrible a day was it?)

Saw Help She Cant Swim (YES!) Foals (Yes) Architecture (Meh) Late Of The Pier (OMGZ THEY ARE BRILLIANT) then I was in Stealth for the remainder of the night and caught the DJ's and that. Erol Alkan was good but I was that hammered by that point he could of been doing anything and I would of moved my hips.

Similar gripes, beginning of the day was a joke. Myspace was everywhere and there were a few tits knocking about. Oh, and my National Express back to London yesterday was one of the most horrendous three and a bit hours of my life.

Think I enjoyed last year that little bit more, but a fantastic day never the less.

                  • One other thing...

Six By Seven were supposed to be playing with the original line up.

They pulled out because they wanted more money and a better timeslot.

                    What utter twats.

                  • Well..i was fairly drunk

so saying hello..may not have been the best idea.

Nearly half the gigs i have been to in the last two months have been at lee rosys tea, so i find it quite funny that people are acting in a 'gigs? Teashop?how queer!' way.

Still, wouldve been nice to see NapIII but AIH are australian ao the likelihood of me not seeing them for a long while if i missed that gig were greatly increased.

                    • I thought it was good

but flwed. Weather did spoil it and that could have seriously impacted the decisions of some people less familiar with the city. Hopefully most fared better.

                      • Six By Seven

Pulled out because they felt fucked around by the promoters, and were fucked off at being offered an opening slot at Trent Uni. They sent this to their mailing list folks:

"six.byseven dot to dot show cancelled (24/5/2007)

Unfortunatly six.byseven will not be appearing at the Nottingham dot to dot festival as indicated on the band‚s website.

We had been trying to contact the organisers about confirmation of the gig and stage times and fee for many weeks now and only managed to get an offer from them yesterday.

Unfortunatly, the offer to put six.byseven on the bottom of the bill, opening the festival and with no mention of the band on the posters or dot to dot official website, we felt it unacceptable to proceed with the show.

Being a band from Nottingham made this even more difficult for us to take and we hope you understand our position.

We are very sorry that we put this show on our website as a confirmed gig when we had not exchanged contracts with the festival organizers, however, we did not envisage that things would turn out this way.

On a more positive note, you can see six.byseven play their first reformed show for FREE at the Orange Tree in Nottingham tomorrow night with support from The Himalaya‚s.

Thanks Six By Seven Mailing List Admin"

that's NO excuse to cancel a gig.

Who do they think they are? They had some amazing albums a few years ago but since members started leaving they've consistently produced dull, lifeless noise-by-numbers.

They should be grateful they were even considered for the line up!
