Really, really terrible.
Like the new Cliff fucking Richard or something, except gay.
what's so great about him. I've never really tried to listen to him much, to be fair.
Nothing I've heard really makes me desperate to.
who I would have expected better of!
You're taste is mostly brilliant.
Mr Wainwright clearly has a really recognisable and hugely versatile voice, I know some people don't like it particularly because he's always doing vibrato, but that's all down to taste. I personally love it.
He's also a clear talent at arranging and writing songs, and he's done stuff bordering on traditional classic music and also dark minimalist piano pices, and then pure pop. So for this I think he has songs to suit all moods and he's got a great ability to write sad theatrical songs. Yeah he's a show off and all that but some of his stuff is like a stage show and with so many different moods and key changes and cadences.
In short, the guys a genius.
I'm just not good enough at persuading to say it in my own words. I do love the Rufus...
I used to really like Rufus. However, doing shows where he does Judy garland covers.......well, it's a bit of a cliche
like Cliff Richard?
Nice one, moron.
although i'm not sure about his sexual history.
And even if you think his songs are crap (which, as much as that baffles me, I have to remember its all a matter of taste)... crap like Cliff Richard's?
I'm glad you made the comparison because otherwise I wouldn't be able to get into this kind of DiScussion. Rufus is one of those musicians who keeps me alive, so when people hate on him my brain falls apart and I feel like I'm being personally attacked :s
So, yeah, Cliff Richard? This intrigues me.
is great. On the whole though, not the incredible record I'd hoped it'd be.
...sometimes attracts is normally born of someone catching a few minutes of one song on TV and deciding they think his voice is a bit whiny. I haven't listened to the new album yet but Want 1 and 2 are incredible pieces of work. Nice job with the borderline/out and out homophobia on this thread - real, real classy.
is the closest person to God alive
I get why people thought Want One was windy and precious, but you need to stick with it. He balances all the drama with just the right amount of raw emotion and the songwriting is consistently brilliant. 11:11 is just...flattening.
Want Two is OK, I'd say Poses is his second best album.
Also, Cliff Richard "except gay"? Is that a joke?
Taken from Wikipedia;
"At age 14, Wainwright was raped in London's Hyde Park after picking up a man at a bar. He remained celibate for seven years after the incident. He later spoke of that night in an interview: "I said I wanted to go to the park and see where this big concert was going on. I thought it was going to be a romantic walk in the park, but he raped me and robbed me afterwards and tried to strangle me". He claims that he survived only by pretending to be an epileptic going through a seizure.
You're a stupid cunt.
...I am calling Mclusky_ a stupid cunt, for his horrific comment. Not Rufus Wainwright, I heart Rufus.
didn't accuse anyone of homophobia, though the logic behind the "joke" is pretty fucking dismal.
But also recognise that he does venture worryingly close to the middle of the road...
two artists who do tend to show up some peoples prejudices and bigotry:
Rufus Wainwright and Beth Ditto.
You can not like something but its really unnecessary to spit out the kind of venom we are seeing in this thread.
in the Amazon Sales Chart! This makes me extremely happy, he deserves everything
was pretty biting i thoguht. not sure if there was venom, but there was definitely a bite.
got AIDS is pretty rough when used to describe someone
number 1 on amazon, eh.
no surprise. he's so bland and unchallenging and populist.
maybe. And if Rufus is what passes for 'bland' in that universe, then I sure as hell wanna go there.
did you see him on transmission last night?
miming incredibly badly.
then he got the words wrong or something
exciting story right there
That one with "beutiful child" on it is pretty great
What kind of lame ass motherfucker gets raped at the age of 14 anyway. Dude's a dweep.
And there was me thinking I had found a board almost entirely devoid of morons, oh well...
I see a comment like that, I just have a quick look at that persons profile, it is always funny to see how retarded they are.
am I as 'retarded' as you had hoped I was? I'm too tired to think of something clever and you have good taste so I am aborting this thread.
jungleking is on your side. He was referring to Acquiescence.
yeh I was, not you ollygoodland
sorry, I was tired and angry last night... couldn't really tell what was going on.
which of his albums I should try. :(
are very good
not listened to much afterwards
is my personal favourite. But you can't go wrong with Poses and the self-titled debut either (although I'd say that the self-titled is possibly the least accessible of the three).
Want Two - however much I LOVE some of it - is terribly self-indulgent and pretty hard to swallow, so not a good starting point.
I love love LOVE lots of it, but overall i just find it all a bit too much. It's the equivalent of me drinking five chocolate milkshakes in a row... it's brilliant for a while, but just leaves me feeling bloated and a bit nauseous.
What's your favourite song of Want Two?
And what was the first Rufus album you heard?
And... is Rufus:
(b) FUCKING wonderful
Answer me these questions three.
fave song on Want Two - the Jeff Buckley tribute, 'under the memphis skyline' i think? abso-fucking-lootely breathtaking.
I also love love LOVE most of the other songs on the album.
The first Rufus album i heard was Want One which I bought after seeing him perform 'Oh what a world' on The Frank Skinner Show (i think?)
Even though you're a bit mental. Memphis Skyline is one of my least favourtie Rufus songs. 'Peach Trees' is my personal favourite off that album.
Sorry if I bombarded you with questions. After the bashing from fuckheads he's received in this thread, I think I got a bit eager with the Rufus-love.
and I take it back. I do find the "emphasis on his sexuality" (to avoid throwing the word 'homophobia' about) pretty hurtful though. It'd be nice to live in a world where it wasn't an issue, but I guess I'm just being drunk and idealistic.
that if you don't like Rufus it's for homophobic reasons. Obviously not. It's just that certain comments on this thread leave a bad taste in one's mouth.
I feel like creakyknees for doing this, but to (hopefully) clarify my point further:
I wasn't saying you're a fuckhead if you don't like Rufus Wainwright. But some of the reasons for people's distaste certainly seem like the reasoning of a fuckhead. You - John_Brainlove - I'm sure are not a fuckhead.
