Despite a record collection mere mortals dream of, I am nothing compared with DiS lunatics. And so, having fallen way behind the times, I decided to listen to some new stuff (...and some old stuff) and give you mini-reviews from the tunes I heard on the radio today. Free of charge.
Fiest - ? (new album). When I saw Leslie open for BSS I thought she was mildly more interesting than Cat Power. So imagine my surprise when this tune kicked my acoustic ass. 9/10
BRMC - Berlin (Baby 81). Less JAMC than a honky tonk AC/DC, this song is not nearly as bad as the DiS review (which I haven't read) will say it is. OK, so it's got a cheesy refrain, something about suicide and revolution; but I never bought a BRMC album thinking the lyrics were penned by Leonard Cohen. 6.5/10
The Electric Soft Parade - ? Pretty damned entertaining. Distorted guitars save the song from making the American sales charts while simultaneously saving the song from being total shit. 7/10
Gus?ter - Satelitte. Similar to the ESP, a pretty cool bridge almost offsets a very mediocre vocal. Almost. 5/10
New Order - ? (PC&L). The tune that starts with Hook's signature bassline and has Bernard's scratchy wide body guitar, it's very good on an album where the sum is greater than its parts. 8.5
Frank Sinatra - My Kind of Town (Chicago is). Unimaginably trite lyrics with a droll big band backing, this is a shit song. Not exactly Summer Wind. Ordinarily I'd score it a 2.5 but then I had to add four more points because of the singer's blue eyes. 6.5/10
Silversun Pickups - ?. Without looking I can pretty much guarantee P4K will crush this band. I don't say it often, but fuck P4K. You want to hear a shoegazy Smashing Pumpkins - and I do! - then you'll like this. 8/10
Chemical Brothers - ?. If I had Billy Mumy's powers in that one Twilight Zone, I'd wish this band into the cornfield. 3/10
Bright Eyes - ? (Cassadaga?). Conor moves to a more conventional music score, but the cynical lyrics will be immediately familiar and comfortably for fans. We know the boy has a masterpiece in him but this isn't it. 7/10
That's all the radio I could handle before going back to the familiar sounds of Slanted and Enchanted - which is, in fact, a masterpiece.
Give your own mini-review(s) ...or slag mine! Your choice. :-)
