The battle of two records made from lots of samples.
I can't decide, they're two of my favourite albums.
SILY - that acronym may be appropriate - is good but there's too much in there to the point where it sounds like a mess and it's more about how many samples could they stuff in there for samples sake. Frontier Psychiatrist is awesome though but Endtroducing trumps it.
it's just rich, i don't think that the samples get in each others way at all.
like a butcher's turd.
Mind you, haven't listened to either for ages.
i think it has more depth. Which is a rubbish thing to say, let alone give it extra credit for, but anyway.
thus making it a less rubbish thing to say
if i knew i would have said, and would be a better person.
All the way to the sperm bank.
Endtroducing is good but it's far too repetitive and unexciting for me. Too few samples and the tracks just drag on along the same pattern for far too long.
Since I Left You is the greatest album of the decade.
Their El Producto mini album is one of the best records of the 90s as well. Very different, very Beastie Boys but very brilliant.
by a long long way.
Since I Left You is a brilliant party album. It works more as an album than Endtroducing as the tracks are all connected in mood and not just because they segue into one another. The aforementioned depth is the overload of different feelings that come across, Endtroducing is just good beats. Since I Left You sounds like nothing else on the planet, Endtroducing sounds like a great many other records. Since I Left You is funny, Endtroducing takes itself way too seriously and aside from the Princess Leia thing has no humour whatsoever. Since I Left You has melodies. Endtroducing has bass lines and beats. Since I Left You also has bass lines and beats. The scratching and mixing on Since I Left You sounds like music, the scratching and mixing on Endtroducing sounds like a DJ playing a set for you. The tracks on Endtroducing follow the same pattern for ages, Since I Left You keeps on changing. The sample sources on Since I Left You are much more varied than those on Endtroducing. The whole record is much more varied than Endtroducing. Despite this it still sounds more like an album. Since I Left You is better driving, cooking, partying, working, emailing and everything else music than Endtroducing. It also has better cover art.
Of course everyone disagrees but as mentioned it's my favourite album of the decade so I might as well stand up for it.
DJ shadow took a considered approach to expand a genre and get people excited again about what he saw as a stagnant art form.
The avalanches covered themselves in glue and dipped themselves in bargain bins in record shops to throw together the most godawful mess of faux 'hipness' this side of the kooks.
I think I'd pick Endtroducing marginally though. Since I Left You is more a once-in-a-while sort of album.
doesnt have organ donor or midnight in a perfect world on it.
organ donor + midnight... > frontier psychiatrist
Sampling is inherently a ridiculous way to make music. Shadow sounds smug and pretentious sometimes.
anyone thinks the avalanches is better... both are good tho :)
Although to be honest, I find both slightly grating over the course of the full album.
both pale into a ghostly hue compared to the majesty that is... Paul's Boutique. Now thats a sample record
but a completely different realm of style i think...
