The NME and racism in the great Hadouken war!

Bundoz [Edit] [Delete] 37 replies 01:20, 26 April '07

There is a 2 page feature in this weeks NME which is basically a good cop/bad cop stand off between hacksters Sam Richards and Tim Jonze.
The argument is over rising hipsters HADOUKEN. The former hates them cos their white middle class 'misogynistic' chancers hi-jacking grime music for their own cynical ends, and Jonze loves them cos they are just four(?)bright young things having a laugh sending up the Hoxton set. I have no opinion on this band whatsoever as i have yet to listen to them. But...
I was immediately irked by Richards stance as it contained the usual 'Whitey cant sing the blues cos' he aint black!' spill that is so common in articles written by white, middle-class university grads from fading-fast music mags. But it was Jonze's piece that really caught my eye. At one point in his rant he says "Will they find success easier because they're white? Ummm, probably. The music industry is riddled with racism..." and then goes on to say if your gonna be like that about it then you should boycott every major white artist ever on the grounds of stealing shamelessly and soulessly from black culture. He blames racist record label big-wigs and racist viewers that vote the black talent off the X-factor in favour of the MacDonald Brothers.
Now i agree with Tim Jonze on all the above, but, it starts to stick in my throat when i know for a fact that an awful lot of music journals will very rarely, if ever, stick a black artist on their big shiny front covers for fear of a lofty dip in sales (it often happens, worringly) whatever week it might be they choose to stick a black artist on the cover. The NME ARE guilty of this and they know it. So, when they start another rant about racism do we label them hypocrites, cos with this practice (and trust me, the NME, and others, do practice this) they are part of the problem they condemn? or, do we just turn around and let it go because its just business and there are jobs at stake and what you gonna do?...any thoughts anyone?

  • Racism in 'still existing' shock!

But really, if youre going to make a criticism of hadouken, make it based on originality and content.

    Music is for everyone man!

    • The NME no fuck all about this.

So obviously there opinion is going to be shit.

I never like Hadouken. Mainly because i thought they were cynically exploiting grime culture, taking from it and amking trendy. There was something quite knowing and smug about their approach to urban music which made it feel really quite orientalist. Also that singer guy has totally jacked JME's flow.

But then I found out Jamie used to produce Grime proper as Dr Venom from the True Tiger Camp, so maybe my feelings about them are wrong. In any case I've never heard any Dr Venom productions, but it doesn't really matter because at the end of the day Hadouken are still soulless shit. As Logan Sama said 'They can suck my ballbag'.

      • no you're just not understanding

        he explains it clearly,

'i'm an indie limey, but i like it grimey'

        solves that problem really

Sam Richards is right on facts but comes off a bit stiff and uncool. Jonze is right on ideals but is too pretentious.

    I call it 1-1.

I personally dislike Hadouken!, though I apparently used to play football with the drummer or something. I don't remember though.

XFM. Oh the Beastie Boys/Eminem/The Streets/Jamie T/Plan B have a new record out? Why our hip city dwelling demographic will love it!

Ah a black person, respected by the indie community (Clipse, Kanye, The Roots, Common, Kano, Dizzee, MF Doom) has made an exciting new record. This will not stand!

Hadouken are truly awful, but in the words of Craig Mack, "they won't be around next year", so who cares?

There is obviously a market for them at the moment though, so good luck to them.

      • i agree with you, oh hilarious chairman.

they're boring and cashing in on the whole "i hate scenesters" movement. lesson: if lots of people think the same thing it is a scene. bozoes.

        • I agree with you

I don't hate hadouken because they're influenced by black music, if i did i couldn't listen to the clash. But i hate them because the singer typifies the sort of holier than thou scenster hating music fan that cant see how hypocritical his opinion is, especially when hadouken are just running with this whole new rave sham anyway. As for nme, i cant remember the last time i ever saw a black artist on the cover that wasnt Kele from bloc party.

  • the whole cutural theft

argument is just being used to talk up a less than average band. it seems controversial, so therefore, important.

  • No one should

be stopped from entering into any area of music, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexuality or whatever and to discriminate as a result just shows a closed-mind.

However, in the great Hadouken! debate, it must be pointed out that 'That Boy, That Girl' is a fucking brilliant tune, but the rest of their rep. is complete gash.

I couldn't care less what they're "doing to grime" (a movement that has always welcomed upstarts anyway) or that they're "sticking it to Hoxton" (yawn).

I only really care about the music.

    crablin | 26 Apr '07, 14:16 | X
    • yeah,

and you could never have expected the nme to have handled racism well.
what was hadouken's picture caption? "Is Rave back? OR BLACK???!!"

        • Just remeber that this is not the first time....

racism has been used in the NME. Does anyone remember this?

          Annoying_person @jazzzz | 29 Apr '07, 16:08 | X
          • yes.

that's something you see a lot of in the bottom feeder end of reading material. Hysteria greets racism towards British Asians and Blacks, but if they are actually foreign, well.

        • Strange trivia

Last night some girl told me Tobi out of Bono Must Die wrote "That Boy That Girl".

          Christ.

I'm not going to even comment on Bono Must Die because a reaction is all they want and I'm not even going to give them that.
