Did anyone go last night? I'm off this evening and it's going to be tight due to work with getting there at a reasonable time - curious to know whether Tilly & The Wall are worth turning up early for?

Tilly were brilliant
But didn't play anywhere near long enough. I suppose she gets tired though. Ratatat are well worth catching if you're there early.
I hated CSS before and they made me feel very old but they were kinda good.

i've seen interviews where they've said that they have to structure their sets so she doesn't get overly tired. i suppose that's why their have loads of rubbish slow songs.

they are probably my favourite live band the dancing an stamping adds so much to watching a band, dunno how it will come across at the astoria though.

I'm glad I stayed in the pub.
CSS put on great performance-I love the front-girls dancing. we stayed right up at the back which offered a great view and room to dance.
It also meant I could see all the kids down the front and endured much rage at their pathetic attempt at glowstick usage. if you're going to get them at least have the decency to use them properly. idiots.

because they have fantastic songs
they're happy, and joyous, and they always look like they're having a great time. They don't really sound like anyone else, but at the same time are influenced by the whole history of indie-pop records. Their lyrics are brilliant (especially Night of the Living Dead). They're very twee, yet they're sometimes aggressive and sweary and have tattoos, they're not all sugary.
The only criticism I have is that they're not as good live as they are on record, but they are improving.
i just think they look uber-contrived
and fake, and didn't think any of the songs they had were even decent indie pop in any way. last night they especially seemed really try-hardy, and i found them uninspiring and boring.

'scenester' debate, because when people pick up on one word people use and use it against their argument it annoys me (but they aren't scenesters, in my opinion).
But I: like some of their songs on record. But live, they make me want to eat bricks. And throw bricks. At myself. And do other things with bricks.

After all that helpful advice (plus the slightly terrifying thread-within-a-thread about scenesters), I cocked it up by arriving too late for TATW anyway. More accurately, like in a bad sitcom, I arrived just in time to see them exit the stage. Their tap dancing tragically remains a mystery to me.

Last night was very enjoyable
aside from Ratatatat at the beginning - deeply tedious and a curious choice of support act.
Tilly and the Wall were great fun, although slightly sinister in a messianic, born again Christian kind of way. They are WAY too happy.
CSS were really good, and played quite a lot of new material. It was as hot as hell and everything ended in a huge sweaty heap on stage.
To be honest
I wasn't overly enthused before I arrived. Was kind of in a bad mood from work and I'd stopped listening to their album a while ago so wasn't expecting too much, but they were 5 times better that I thought they would be....it was great, really energetic and sparky, whatever that means. So two thumbs up from me....

and it made me sad. it was all SO average. i think i like ratatat but they're not exactly an exciting band to see live. oh man, i just don't get the css thing. it's all so obvious and trite and annoying. also, tilly and the wall don't have many good songs with actual good hooks and things that are necessary for the kind of songs they are trying to make.
