Remember how I liked Camera Obscura?

wrightylew [Edit] [Delete] 33 replies 17:06, 22 April '07

I now don't.

I turned up at the venue, admittedly fairly late, thinking I'd miss one or two tracks at the most.

It was a FRIDAY. The bouncers on the door said: "Oh its an early curfew tonight, they've been on for ages."

So me, my chum and a load of other strangers turned up at 9, and caught the last song of the set, Razzle Dazzle Rose.

Now, fair enough, I was pretty late, but most, if not every single band I have ever seen in the past, has come on at 9pm or later. The band could easily have sent out a MySpace bulletin, or even told news sites like this, that people should turn up at doors time.

I threw £10 away, to catch a half-decent Camera Obscura song. I blame myself 10%, and the band 90%. I won't be giving them any more of my money, ever again.

  • I'd blame yourselg 90%...

You should have checked the door times. And if you weren't so dismissive of support bands, you'd have seen it all!

That said... this happened to me with British Sea Power once. But I just thought it was the Carling Academy's weird weekend policy that was to blame not the band, who are told when they have to play by the promoter.

    • I'm not dismissive,

I was trying to rile his ass.

Thing is, I don't like standing in sweaty venues for half an hour, paying through the nose for a bad pint.

I had quite a nice evening in the end, involving Big Hands and 42nd Street. But I shan't be visiting 42s again either. Its naff.

      • nice evening at 42nd street

an oxymoron if i ever saw one!

its nothing to do with the band at all,

it's your fault. and maybe slightly the venue's/promoter's

      but the band's fault? behave.

      allisfulloflove @John_Brainlove | 22 Apr '07, 17:10 | X
      • They must've known.

In which case they had a right to let everyone know.

They'll have had a laptop around. Send a bulletin out or something, and its fine.

        wrightylew @allisfulloflove | 22 Apr '07, 17:10 | X
        • i know what you mean

          but still, check yourself!

        • I saw them last night

last gig of a four month tour. The band are pretty fried after it. I'm sure they'd be pissed off at fans missing out as well but would assume people would show up earlier

          cadd @wrightylew | 22 Apr '07, 17:14 | X
        • It's not their responsibility though.

They play for promoters, who book the band and whose job it is to advertise the gig and make sure it runs smoothly.

          Thom_fa @wrightylew | 22 Apr '07, 19:48 | X
        • do you mean obligation?

And stop being a dick. Of course it isn't the bands fault you missed them.

          MEGAtron @wrightylew | 23 Apr '07, 00:09 | X
  • That's really really interesting.

    You're also 'an interesting person'.

    wrightylew @myfirstmine | 22 Apr '07, 18:28 | X
    • i've done the same

but i was half an hour late for the support act.

then the headliners were awfula nd we left after 3 substandard songs.

    • Auch:

      Nah. Their website said nothing.

      • what time

        did your ticket say?

        Placid_Casual @wrightylew | 22 Apr '07, 18:30 | X
        • Doors: 7.30

I haven't been to a gig for the doors time since I was about 14. Its impractical, and often ends up taking money out of your wallet, as I said before.

Also, every headliner I can remember seeing has been on at 9 at the VERY earliest.

          wrightylew @Placid_Casual | 22 Apr '07, 18:31 | X
          • What time did you get there

if you only caught half a song?

            theguywithnousername @wrightylew | 22 Apr '07, 18:36 | X
            • Oh - you already answered that

I wouldn't expect a headline band to be finished by 9.

              theguywithnousername @theguywithnousername | 22 Apr '07, 18:39 | X
              • But still

you should have checked the timings beforehand.

      • With,,,

the amount of gigs that end early for a clubnight to happen afterwards, it's not exactly a rare thing to have a gig finish at 9:30 for a clubnight to start at 10. It's the kind of thing that's posted on venues websites, which most sensible people check before they leave to find the venue if it's unfamiliar. If it isn't, you'll generally know if they have a regular Friday clubnight.

      • We all know

twee-poppers need to be in bed with cocoa by 10.

        Alex_b | 23 Apr '07, 00:42 | X
      • As before...

it generally only happens when there's an unrelated clubnight on at the same venue later on, where gigs will finish 9:30-10:00, to leave time for kicking out, closing, clearing up and reopening in time for the clubnight. Saturday shows at the Astoria always finish at 10, and have done so for years, to make way for G.A.Y. afterwards.

        Mu_Tron @sloth | 23 Apr '07, 01:30 | X
        • Its still harsh

I normally expect a band to come on between 9.30 and 10 and play for an hour. I think the few shows I've been to with a curfew started around 9 and finished bang on 10, but the curfew has always been made clear on the venues website. So I'd pretty annoyed if the band finished just after 9. Although now I'm getting old, the idea of being home by 10 with a cup of cocoa certainly has its appeal!

          fenella @Mu_Tron | 23 Apr '07, 09:47 | X
          • we got there just after half eight

and they had just started - they finished about half nine, including encore, and to be fair to them they seemed pretty pissed off at having to finish so early. if it's any consolation i thought they were pretty disappointing
