Pelican, TAAS and AN Emergency last night...

Captain-Lex [Edit] [Delete] 22 replies 11:06, 20 April '07

Pelican = boring to the last painfully dull BLOUWWWMMMM of their crescendos?

TAAS = Anarchic, sharp, heavy as hell and down right bloody entertaining?

An Emergency = top top top quirky angles flying all over the place :) Me like very very much.

Would anybody like to elaborate?

but i liked pelican a little bit. only watched half their set though.

  • I missed An Emergency but...

I thought the opposite regarding the other two...

Pelican = Very few crescendos, but when they turned up, worked quite well for me, very drone though. City of Echoes was ace...

TAAS = Despite being heavy, I found I could quite easily shut them off completely and ignore them. Needed better sound / more melody.

Has to fuck off at half ten mind to get home...

    • You're right there

the sound was pretty poor all night. The vocals for TAAS were pretty much lost.

That sucks you had to leave early cos for Pelican's encore, we had a 4 guitar, 2 bass, 2 drummer and a vocal to witness when TAAS joined in! It was just a drone jam but it was interesting.

I really wanted to like Pelican but there are bands that do drone much better, Sun O))), Boris etc and although there were moments that made me listen more intently, everything was a bit predictable.

      • Awwwwww man!

That sounds like I would have enjoyed it...

I'm no stranger to drone, and quite enjoyed what I caught of the set, but yeah, poor sound just lost all the detail. Funnily enough, I thought that if they just had a singer with a really distinct, but great voice, they could be a really superb band, as it is, they just get a bit dull after a while...

I'm with you on Sunn O))) and Boris though - top droning.

  • Ou est

March to the Sea et Last Day Of Winter?

I thought the new material was good - a bit more to the point that the first 2 albums.

  • Pelican were better last year at the garage

but they were still fat last night. i didnt dig the sound though. They only sounded droney because there was no definition. if last night was the first time you've heard them, you should check out their albums.

    • .

Definitely wouldn't class Pelican as droney.

Definitely would class them as being boring live though.

      • That's why I was a little disapointed

cos I didn't really class them as drone either. I've heard a few tracks from And the fire in our throats beckoned the thaw or whatever it's called and there are some really intricate melody sections that we didn't even get a sniff of last night. I think they fell foul of a rubbish sound system. Goes to show how important good sound is. I'm pretty sure there were quite a few people there last night who were checking out Pelican for the first time and that was not the perfect introduction.

        • aye well...

I've listened to City of Echoes and Drought a lot beforehand... city of Echoes kind of worked live, but Drought was swamped and turned into 9 mins of one note...

    • Can't comment on this gig

but when they played Leeds on Wednesday the sound was as clear as a bell, they didn't seem droney at all. In fact I thought the new material seemed much more melodic than their old stuff.
TAAS vocals were pretty poor at Leeds also though, but they did rock HARD, great live show!

  • funnily enough

    i agree with my brother!

pelican were the most boring band i have seen in my life.
instrumental bands need to be inventive to make up for the lack of vocals...but they were just like 4 guys who had listened to metallica their whole lives and not bothered to get a singer.

TAAS were great as always, despite the bad sound and lack of 'good news'

an emergency were really cool interesting stuff. would have liked a longer set from them

      • im tempted

        theyre pretty cool

        katekamikaze @guntrip | 20 Apr '07, 12:03 | X
  • An Emergency played?

    :(

We only got TAAS and Pelican in Leeds.

And to be totally honest, Pelican were immense, totally blew TAAS off the stage.

  • i'm glad

that i'm not the only one who's been to see pelican and found it ridiculously boring and disappointing.

    Brooner | 20 Apr '07, 12:38 | X
    • ^ i thought pelican and taas

were both amazing in leeds. prefered TAAS although the guitar was slightly muffled. love them whenever i see them mind

      robellovich @Brooner | 20 Apr '07, 13:35 | X
      • We get Jacob's Stories as well tonight

So this might well be ONE OF THE BEST GIGS EVER.

        Murder @robellovich | 20 Apr '07, 13:54 | X
  • Just found this

I couldn't disagree with you more.

As good as TAAS were at Leeds, Pelican made them look like a bunch of children who had never played an instrument before.

At one point I took the time to look around the room toward the end of Pelican's set and had the sight of every person in that room moving along with the music. Amazing.

So yeah, Pelican are one of the best bands I have ever seen, without a shadow of a doubt.

We didn't get An Emergency :(

    Dalkin | 21 Apr '07, 11:05 | X
  • I so want to see

    An Emergency !

    lyle | 21 Apr '07, 15:03 | X
  • I didn't want to create a new thread for this

So I'll just say- last night was utterly amazing!
Jacob's Stories- Great songs and atmosphere, and he had a wonderful voice. His songs sounded like the best parts of the Thom Yorke album- and I mean that as praise of the highest order.
These Arms Are Snakes- Incredible. Steve was the most rock'n'roll frontman I'd ever seen, even though I couldn't really hear his words, he had an incredible presence, and the whole thing was wonderfully energetic. Every bit as good as I thought it would be.
Pelican- Sounded pretty good too. Really heavy and special, and I could make out all the parts. As loud as hell, but very majestic.

And if anyone is wondering, I was the guy going mental to TAAS.

    Murder | 21 Apr '07, 16:12 | X
  • wasnt there last night

but Pelican and TAAS = two of the most disappointing heavy bands i've ever seen?

An emergency = one of the most exciting bands in the country right now?
