The National. By miles. The new album is amazing.
I prefer the National by a long way on CD but they were so boring live whereas the Arcade Fire blew me away.
I thought The National were brilliant live. Everything sounded so skyscraping and huge and the singer was intense as hell.
but I felt like the vocals were limp and half hearted. Actually the whole thing was technically correct but limp and half hearted. Like they didn't really want to share their lovely music with us. Also there was a really brightly lit poster to my left which was distracting me.
imagen that at times Matt Beninger possibly finds it difficult onstage.. the lyrics are very, very honest and i've heard story of him walking offstage because he cant deal with it at times.
Whilst funeral is a great record, Alligator is one of the front runners of album of the decade.
the arcade fire are maybe better live... however that Astoria gig may change things.
Boxer is superb... so is Neon Bible though..
No need to choose.
is Latitude, it's lovely apparently..
july 12th-14th or something.
i want to go but my friends, who a week and a half ago were prepared to spend £150 on a glastonbury ticket, are being utter divs. i hate them all.
is it on sale now? when will it sell out?
Or not at all.
Last year was lovely. It really is a nice festival, and the area where it's set is beautiful.
And because I think that they do similar things, okay they don't sound that alike but as I was listening to them in the car at lunchtime I thought 'this lot should be as big as the Arcade Fire, I'm sure the same people who like AF would love the National if they were given the same exposure' so I made a thread about it. Is that okay?
Alligator > Funeral, even though both are great, and the 3 songs I've heard off Boxer are amazing while I'm underwhelmed by Neon Bible so far.
though it's quite a close one
but am put off by their boring name
they're honey to your ears. If honey was nice in ears.
i also like The National. BUT I think Arcade Fire just 'pip' it for me. There's more energy in the Arcade Fire, wheras the National are better in a 'slow burn' way.
The National are just dull.
Both worse than AIDS.
End of thread.
But The National
The National. Woop.
The National do horrible U2 delay guitar solos and The Arcade Fire just do that get loud get quiet all play the same thing build up thing on every song!
Maybe Arcade Fire.
Alligator disappointed me a bit, yet everyone started raving about them The National and that album, which just confused me seeing as their previous ep and album seemed to have been ignored. I like the album more now, but not as much as Arcade Fire's albums.
Doubt I'll ever go to a gig of either band again, as they're almost too popular now for me, but am contemplating Latitude festival if other good bands are announced, as that would be fun.
Boxer's great in places, drags in others. Vocals are still dull as dishwater.
These bands are almost too popular... oi feck! To us maybe, but the masses don't know AF from the National...hell, 4 outta 5 in the US don't know who the Vice President is.
Erm, maybe it was the alcohol (I'd slipped a wee bit from the AA way last summer...ahem) but I thought the National were the best band I saw, including AF, who were fantastic themselves. I agree the National's stuff recorded can be a bit too brooding, but live their music came alive for me.
I'm gonna have to run down to the store and buy the new National album.
the national's cherry tree mini lp and the bsides to abel (Driver, Surprise Me & Keep It Upstairs) are fantastic but i e-bayed Alligator, found it too dark to listen as a whole. the national taste better in bitesize portions imo. have seen them live and thought they were excellent, very intense. like the AF too and looking forward to them at latitude. both bands are plating sunday if you want a face off.
the national = interpol mixed with killers vocals. but just alot more boring.
arcade fire are the best thing since sliced bread (Danish white) and i dont know why youre even making the comparison.
i don't get the killers comparison. Get your ears sorted.
Arcade fire made 1 album and can't follow it up.
with that follow-up album.
you destroy your own argument if you think the vocalist to the national and the killers sound a like !
Boxer yesterday, I don't think they've managed to take things forward any. Still sounds like a band finding their feet; every time you want them to pick things up and blow you away they go in the wrong direction. Same goes for the vocals; where they need to soar, they just amble along with very little variation. The track they're releasing as a single is, in all honesty, pretty amazing, but I don't think there's much capacity for the rest of it to grow on me from here. It's good solid stuff, don't get me wrong; but it seems a bit early in their careers to be settling in like this.
