I'm currently undecided.
At last. Only a week and a half before the release is impressive.
Becuase it's taken so long to leak, I'm going to patient and wait - spinning the LP for the first time will be so neat.
I like on the tracks I've heard. I love another.
Two of the tracks bootleg live versions I've heard are pretty rubbish, especially Soul Singer In A Session Band.
and isn't it Cassadaga?
soul singer is baaaaaaad...
but the LP is, I feel, much stronger than I'm Wide Awake... still cannae dig that motherfucker...
I've heard mixed opinions but I'm looking forward to hearing it nonetheless.
was great live at oxford, i thought
got a link now.
im quite drunk so i think this is the perfect time to evaluate mr oberst's new cd.
This is the 21st century.
Therefore I have downloaded it. I wouldn't ever have bought it (first hand) anyway.
I don't see how expanding my music collection for free without taking anything from the artist makes me an idiot. I'd have thought it was rather smart. But this is a different discussion for a different thread.
I'm still undecided about the LP.
if you're not prepared to pay for music, you're not allowed to hear it.
listened to it on the way to work, it started off well then a sceptical eyebrow was firmly raised for a few songs until middleman which was pretty good and the next song, then I arrived at work :(
mail me an invite?
where i was listening to this. halfway through, i realised that every song was a ripoff of a track from Her Space Holiday's "The Young Machines" album. buh?
that IS a good album.
I've had a promo for a week (didn't get it in time to listen to it before doing the interview, tho, grr!)
So first listen the americana/country vibe is a bit apparent after listening to digital ash a lot lately.
Few more listens and the lyrics really come to the fore and into focus and for me, that's usually the best bit when all the strands conciousness weave together.
I think it might be his best album so far, tho I love 'Wide Awake...' and 'Lifted...' and there's no song on it as instantly enthralling as 'Haligh' or 'Calendar Hung Itself' or as biting as 'When the President Talks to God' but it is, as a whole, a really strong, brave and powerful album.
Can I get a job writing reviews for Amazon now?
so I don't mind.
I love middleman, but soul singer.. is possibly the worst bright eyes song ever
but that's the only 2 songs i've heard (other than four winds). middleman live was great.
i'll be patient & wait for my LPs which should be on its way :)
yeh does anyone else have an invite for oink? firstname.lastname@example.org
lied ^ - heard i must belong somewhere love that one too.
First thoughts - the worst Bright Eyes album. Still okay
I don't think that this is going to join Wide Awake and Lifted at the top of my bright eyes tree.
I've loved the production on every Bright Eyes record, but this one. It just sounds so flat
i was nearly in that camp to begin with.
similar abour the Four Winds EP when you first heard it and then change your mind?
I mean, I will give it a chance, and chances are I'll change my mind.
But I'm just saying my thoughts as of now, first impressions, etc...
isn't very good. It's just very average country rock with some fairly bland lyrics. Let's be honest - the statements he's making are pretty GCSE level. And the music is very formulaic. If he didn't have the stature he already does, I can't imagine that many people would be particularly interested.
but right now I totally agree
about that lyric comment, it always takes awhile for me to get his lyrics, i'll be listening to them and then it will jump out what he means, maybe im just slow, but im gonna wait for them to reveal themselves.
when will we get to see the interview?
thread is scaring the shit out of me, surely its beyond conor to produce a bad record? isn't it? argh
I heard he's less of a drug addled wreck these days
he he wasnt on drugs when doing letting off the happiness, its the drugs money and fame that have made him worse!
there is a song called the joy in acceptance the joy in forgetting where he sings "I get cocaine from a girl I know and my brother buys me alcohol" pretty early song I think, he may of course have been lying. Im wide awake is pretty good and that was the time he was at his worst.
was gonna give a running dvd style commentary but am rubbish so instead:
1. "Clairaudients (Kill or Be Killed)" yes
2. "Four Winds" Yes
3. "If the Brakeman Turns My Way" no
4. "Hot Knives" no
5. "Make a Plan to Love Me" No
6. "Soul Singer in a Session Band"NO!
7. "Classic Cars" No
8. "Middleman" YES!
9. "Cleanse Song" Yes
10. "No One Would Riot for Less" yes
11. "Coat Check Dream Song" yes
12. "I Must Belong Somewhere" YES
13. "Lime Tree" yes
I love middleman it sounds like the firefly score
he says traditionally the first track is cumbersome to warn off casual listeners, maybe its a tactic he has extended to cover the whole first half (but I do actually like the first 2)
