Can I do it? Or is it pointless?
it won't turn out how you plan anyway
thats the fun!
it doesn't have to have a point
DO IT DO IT DO IT etc
It turned out fucking terrible. Hope you have more luck than me.
this is why i don't bother. despite the fact that i rilly rilly rilly want to be in a band :(
but i doubt you mean exactly that.
what's with that though? you can be original with guitars/bass/drums and that, y'know. what is original to you?
but if it's shit please don't unleash it onto myspace or something.
Making music is fun though! I have shittonnes of music on my computer that's trying to be original, but i'm only going to let other people hear it when it isn't shit, which could be never.
'not planning on doing anything original' in the sense that you're not going to be groundbreaking, or in the sense that you're going to rip off another song? Because the latter is stupid, but being groundbreaking is overrated. Good songwriting is much more important, and it just takes loads of practice. So yeah, do it.
You do other unoriginal things for kicks, right?
'Originals' almost never do so it makes sound financial sense.
people make that equates roughly to attention-seeking activities like dressing as a chicken and jumping on top of cars in the street.
given the absolutely enormous amount and variety of technology available to musicians today it's next to inconceivable that any one band should 'sound like' another.
but they do.
*goes back to playing with yamaha keyboard and ukelele*
given the similarity of a lot of that technology - or the way it bends the creative process to its own workings, it's not surprising electronic music is so stale these days. I'm sure 95% of it is bedroom kids throwing loops around...
rehashing original stuff: please rehash something worthwhile, and if you smugly strut around going "ah got the riot city blues yeah!" I shall bludgeon you within an inch of your life, you cretin.
if you make an entire track using ableton then it's gonna sound like it was made on ableton. if you mix things up and are really willing to experiment you'll get something really unique sounding.
like napoleon iiird. best example of people using a massive range of different technologies because he's obsessed with not sounding like anyone else.
