I say Pumpkins.
If the pumpkins had split after mellon collie would they be as revered as Nirvana are now?
blog entitled 'my penis story' is the best blog I have ever read.
and no, not a chance, Corgan would still have released that shoddy solo album, and Mellon Collie would still sound as horribly dated nowadays. And they wouldn't have released the excellent Adore, so they'd actually be worse!
end of fucking story. What a stupid question
i can only really listen to in utero and mtv unplugged
comparing the two. corgan did have a hand in cobain's suicide though, he was trying to tempt courtney back to him, it's a fact that the pumpkins benefitted from cobain's death in so many ways, but it's a fair enough point to say that they managed to blow the opportunity to be a U2 sized band rather spectaculary as well. discuss.
apart from being promoted to lollapalooza headliners. as i understand it siamese dream was already doing really well when he killed himself.
On paper, it looks like a 3 on 4 scrap.
However, Novoselic is the size of two men, which may even it up, particularly as D'arcy and Iha (unless he has ninja skillz) look a bit weedy.
Cobain and Corgan would probably go head to head in some 2 way junkie grapple, may be too close to call.
... drummers in rock. I couldn't possibly pick one... though I find Corgan's use of the Big Muff very pleasing...
by a million miles
two of the greatest bands of all time.
Greater body of work of a consistently high quality before the machina crap.
Basically the only band I'd even consider in one of these Nirvana VS. things would be Fugazi. And even then it would probably have to be Nirvana. Can we not talk about something worthwhile like up and coming British bands?
fugazi piss all over nirvana.
what he said
other bands better than nirvana:
alice in chains
I was being kind of ironic as I just wrote a big rant in the Nirvana vs Hole thread and inevitably things like this will be pointlessly argued by me and everyone until music ceases to exist.
But why the laughter? Even if I was joking, I do still have a point, ironic or otherwise...
it's just these days there is such a lack of good british music that i often find myself sitting at work pondering 'who is better- smashing pumpkins or Nirvana?' i have reverted back to 1993 in a need to find something that doesn't have a disco beat.
Thats not to say its all bad. but alot of it is.
but you should start a thread entitled 'good new british bands' and prove me wrong.
but it would be a JAG if I was to start with the best...
Nirvana never got to me. I like them, I rate them, but when your best body of work is In Utero, and put that against Siamese Dream- no contest. Similarly, Gish and Pisces Iscariot (as examples of early material) sound SO much better than Bleach. I love the Pumpkins so much.
For Pete's sake!
Tune in next week for Nirvana Vs Staind: The Final Showdown.
only because I've not heard a lot of Smashing Pumpkins, but what I've heard I quite like. So in all honesty Im not that well informed and you shouldn't listen to me.
Hmmm. Pumpkins, for all the great b-sides and general consistency.
the version of XYU is incredible..
on the Mellon Collie tour when they played that. Fell over and got stomped a bit.
they left a good ten minute gap when they just stood onstage in darkness, then finally "in the eyes of the jackal I SAY-" etc. I said "you bastards, i have to catch the last train" and promptly missed the last three songs and a half hour silverfuck. Great gig though.
definitely.ive never really felt compelled to buy a nirvana album although i quite like in utero
Favorite band ever.
Love Nirvana almost as much
why primavera is getting me stupidly excited.
I guess I've listened to Pumpkins more over the years.
But Nirvana were so amazing, Kurt's voice... and his personality and... I dunno.
Pumpkins by a nose.
Nirvana have one alright album.
Cobain would never, ever have been able to write a song as wistful and evocative as 1979.
Cause they had more to them then Nirvana ever could and were....... until 2000 at least deevishly consistent. If Nirvana went on longer then maybe we would of been able to develope a higher opinion of them, Nirvana write the better pop songs but overall? Pumpkins
people saying Pumpkins weren't into music that much in 91 - maybe too young?
Otherwise they would be saying Nirvana.
to be fought. Nirvana would beast the Pumpkins in the first round
And have a victory photo holding Billy Corgan by the ankles like a fish.
because if you were into music back then you would realise that Nirvana did more with one album (possibly even one song but I won't go there) than Smashing Pumpkins will ever achieve. Sorry.
end of thread.
as more people have said pumpkins u silly sausage!
I'm choosing to believe that every Pumpkins vote was meant in this way.....
Back in high school you had to choose one or t'other. It was tough in the 90s, you lot don't know you're BORN.
by a small margin. Big fan of both bands but i Never saw Nirvana. Caught Billys boys twice. The Brixton Academy gig in 96 is one of my all-time top 5 fave gigs. Spellbinding!
easy. I like Nevermind but I never saw it as the album of the generation it was hailed to be. Conversely, Mellon Collie is pretty fucking great despite the reviews, and I was listening to Machina a few weeks back and trying to remember why I thought it was shitty; t'was actually pretty damn cool. Gish is freakin genius, and I've got moods where only Adore will suffice. Not by a nose, as Mr Brainlove suggests. At least two lengths.
Well said oceanRain! going to see them at Leeds or Reading?
they are playing smaller shows on the continent, paris, belgium, etc. london has to be in there...
er, nirvana won't be touring this year...
that the carling festival shows will be their only dates here. Ive got a ticket for leeds but i'd still love to see them in a venue again.
Oh, I know! The drummer started some stupid band called Foo Fighters.
the Poo Shiters as they are unaffectionately known in my part of the woods.
see what you did there! come on, they're great if you are fifteen or something, or caned on white lightning at a festival :D
did I win the thread then with my brilliant 'pumpkins are better cos they're not (as) dead as nirvana' arguement?
Go buy yourself a case of white lightning.
can we stop this thread now? it's spinning a bit...
is very good for walking on. End thread.
