i dont get it. explain.
love the fake boho / a bit camp thing?
time to be more controv.
HES SHIT! why are people buying this crap? Plus the magic position single sounds like YMCA by the village people.
please do. i would love to know as i am movong inot a house with 3 massive pw fans and i actually want to not mind when he gets played...
i like him because he's an excellent performaer, has a lovely voice, makes interesting and genuinely creative records, has a nice mix of instrumentation on his albums, fantastic lyrics, it's theatrical etc. etc.
That T4 performance IS awful by his standards, though. It sounds like he's the only one doing a live performance, too.
His new album isn't my favourite, personally, and if you have an aversion to very happy, poppy stuff then obviously you're not going to be too enamoured with it. However, I think it's good fun and it never fails to make me smile. Optimistic music doesn't automatically mean bad music, you know.
And people go mad for him because he has talent. You have to give him that, at the very least.
but i don't really get why people go quite so mad over him..
girls music innit
i know fewer men who like him than women.
For the record though, i dont think hes shit...i just dont 'get' it. i find his voice flat or overproduced, and ocasssionally annoying. His tunes are nothing special or original, and thatrics dont figure in my enjoyment of music.
I saw him singing yesterday morning on T4, and it was funnily rubbish.
'The Libertine' turned me on, though.
To be honest, most of his outfits make me want to slam his head in an oven.
Musically though, he's a big bag of brilliance. Well, the first album and bits of the second were. I've not heard the new one yet, but live it didn't sound that spiffing.
the perrenial moment when you know an artist has sold out.
you've lost it.
obv i prefer final fantasy:
just one bloke, violin, effects pedals.plus he doesnt look like his daddy paid for him to be a musician.
It was pretty interesting. I don't think I'd be able to watch a full concert of the guy with the violin, but I'd give him a look.
But his vocals were a bit iffy. Especially the shouting.
Crowd seemed like idiots too. HYSTERICAL LAUGHTER AS SOON AS HE SPEAKS, NO MATTER WHAT HE SAYS.
Does it not seem a bit like a talent show though, watching him? Like the end of Phoenix Nights episodes?
is between watching one man and a guitar and watching one man and a violin. If you can sit through one wyou can sit through the other if you like the music.
So you think the violin is as versatile an instrument as the guitar?
I think it can, its just not as readily acessable and as commonly used in modern music. but yeah, i wouldnt sit through it unless i liked the music.
but i will.
T'wierd thing is that FF wouldnt be as big without the Arcade Fire thing going for him, but hes still quite good and genuine, which i like.
Frankie Sparo too;
listen to 'send for me' and 'my sistr'.
hes sold out. hs quite clearly changed the style of his music, for what ive heard to be worse than the stuff i was just indifferent to, signed to a major label, and set himself up with an 'image' which, judging by my friends posters, wasnt there before. This is clearly to sell records. Thats selling out.
he has changed his style of music because he wanted to.
he explicitlt stated on a letter to his fans last year that the album would be different as he has undergone a change of mood and feeling in his life. he's happier, essentially (possibley due to his relationship with kele off of bloc party?).
each one of his albums has been slightly different.
this change of mood can also explain the apparent new image, more flambouyant, colourful, fun. he changes image so so often though. it's certainly not to do with selling records.
also be an excuse for selling records.
and judging by the amount of praise he'd garnered with his previous formula, a wrong view too.
why lie like that when you're already selling records?
i think you're wrong basically.
hes the contemporary equivalent of David Bowie. he changes his image and musical style between albums. for his first album he had an image, and a different one for the second album, and new for this one too.
the fact that his newest "persona" isnt, in many peoples opinion (and mine) as good as his old ones doesnt make him a sell out
a male madonna.
Im going to leave it now. I dont think i like this man or his music.
whats your point?
how was this not left in the 80's?
Thing is, if he wasn't such an eccentric character, there's no chance he'd be getting this much coverage.
he's getting the coverage now because he's just signed to a major. he first two albums did pretty well without much in the way of promotion, mostly just word-of-mouth from people who liked it..
Wasn't aware of his major labelage.
Do you think he'll appeal to the Scissor Sisters, Mika market?
anyone who has only heard the magic position album doesn't really get a full picture of Patrick Wolf, he has gone a litle camp butlins red-coatish, but the album Lycanthropy is the single best thing I've ever heard... read the first couple of two reviews here maybe to get an idea of what it sounds like maybe
and i dont like it. i dont get this 'its dark' business either.
is ridiculously dark.
I suppose it's just not your kind of thing. You'll just have to learn to put up with him, I'm afraid.
ignore it and itll go away...
(Omglzone has probably givn one of the most mature responses ever. Have a confused dinosaur http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p131/Kroatoan/t-rexquestionlife.jpg)
as did the kocks-I mean the kooks, lily allen and other rich-types
even we thought bedales were stuck up their own arseholes.
are really original and atmospheric, and dark and wonderful, and features way more character than 99% of records you'll ever hear.
While his new record maintains that last part, i'm sorry to say I really really hate it. It's not fun, just annoying.
but the new one it toss. people havent realised yet.
just more succinct.
I need to stop doing this reply.
And I quite like his new one. So there.
this entir thread has mad me go from mild indifference in an attempt to like him to total dspisation.
ithere way i know where i stand. Thankyou to all.
leading to me smiling
to hear some good male solo efforts. were both winners.
and he wears silly clothes and is a bit young and naive.
Apart from those points, he is a wonderful musician, and he has made, in my opinion, one of the best albums of all time. Lycanthropy is heartbreaking.
And forgtting about patrick wolf.
hopefully itll go away if i dont give it any more attention..
oooh...i could listen to mountain goats as well....
(based only on "The Maic Position").
In places it's a great album. "Overture", "The Bluebell/Bluebells" and "Stars" are all excellent songs but I do find the posturing a bit much. At places (such as the afore-mentioned "Bluebells") the melodrama works great but in others it simply sounds like he's trying too hard and it's laboured.
I do like him but I really wish he'd relax a little and stop trying too hard.
Plus the album cover is genuienly the worst I've ever seen in my life. He just looks silly!
Wind In The Wires less so.
Magic Position less so.
although I love them all. They're all special in their own little way.
admittedly still havnt heard any albums, he still just seems like a poor mans final fantasy.
Magic position was great live and he had some fun songs. Very camp and theatrical which was cool, but fails to capture my interest like final fantasy.
I know theyre only similiar cos theyre both camp and play the violin, and not at all really musically, so lay off Wolf fans.
lame comparison. wolf barely plays his violin now. too busy being a pop star.
it was just because theyre both male solo artists of a specific generation, who have used loop pedals and violins. If the two were wholly comparable musically i wouldnt listn to ff. plus I didnt know either were gay for a long time.
i'm not angry at wolf fans that much either. I just despise their dogmatism sometimes. I suppose it must be the same if you dont like arcade fire.
Laziest comparison everrrr.
i said i prefered him.
not that they were the same.
yes_. But I get you.
And yes_, sorry, I didn't read properly.
But, still, LAZIEST COMPARISON EVER, MAAAAN. It's basically like saying Wonderwall is similar to Final Fantasy, because there are both violins involved.
That's what i was pointing out. I really dont know why I connect them.
