bands faking genre?

stickboy [Edit] [Delete] 22 replies 13:05, 2 February '05
Well seeing as im on a roll thought i would start a new thread..

Do you think bands change there style of music to fit in with whats cool at the mo...or do you think they were always playing that style of music?

For example....right now the kind of guitar mixed with 80s vocals is very "in" and suddenly there are loads of bands (all getting signed may i add!) that play music like this!!

Now surely they cant have always been playing stuff like this and it just happens so were loads of others but then again.... im sure they cant just change their style overnight to fit in...

what dyou reckon!??

im certain the departure appeared only thanks to this trend ... they didnt exist before it - now theyve got a big deal and big supports in the time it would take most bands to crawl out of their mates dads garage

(but i do like a couple of their songs :s)

yeh but they all pretty much appear at once..... its not like one band did it and then a year later there were loads of them....they must have all been doing it unsigned and then all discovered at once.

lost prophets used to rip off incubus on the first album
then turned up the emo-ish style for the second

kinda anyway...would that count as trend following ?

Often there are lots of people working in a said area and making similar music, and the ones who break first are called ine innovators, and everyone else is assumed to have copied. Bollocks really.
But then, yeah, sometimes people are influenced by or even blatantly copy to try and get signed, which is worse.

people thought deftones were highly influenced by korns nu-metal sounds ... evn though they are the older band, they just got signed after korn did. (they both say they influenced each other "back in the day")

that kinda thing happens a lot too.

people changin there style to make it:

      snow patrol
      stereophonics (latest song)
      athlete (goodbye lovely synths...hello piano)

now i know they havent radically changed their styles...but enough i think.... admittedly it kinds also feels like maybe they just got better a writing a song.

Im not saying its bad to become better at writing songs.... its more the amount of band sthat suddenly appear .....like hundreds of the bastards!!!!

i love one night is not enough..... but they have defo changed.... its prob just the production and stuff though.... bigger label means more money for better recordings

        • Re: bands faking genre?

I was sayin on the lo-fi thread - bigger budget often doesn't mean better recordings. it means more polished recordings that are often not as good as the more lo-fi ones.

          • Re: bands faking genre?

i usually find with a polished recording that on first listen its like "wow this is amazing" but after 10 listens its really really annoying...where as something a bit rawer isnt always so immediate but given the time can become the most beautiful and intimate thing you will ever hear.

there are millions of local bands that suddenly went 'nu metal' 8 years ago or 'emo' 3 years ago

i go to an art college in Trefforest, which is sort of the start of the South Wales Valleys. Everyone there (slight exageration) looks like their auditioning for Funeral For A Friend or Lostprophets.

        • Re: bands faking genre?

The fact is, people who were brought up in the 80's/early 90's are the people who are forming bands and making music now. So obviously theres going to be alot of 80's influenced stuff around. Although there will allways be people who try to ape whatever the sound of the moment is.

I have to admit, I like some of the departure's stuff. I think it's more the labels that bandwagon jump, rather than bands themselves. People like the departure just get signed in about 2 seconds because they know it will sell.

i agree! Soon as labels see a band doing well they sign up something simillar, to try and shift units. There's this band round here called The Vanities, they've been doing the whole 80s synth thing long before i'd heard of The Killers. Saw them once at the Barfly, the place was full of what appeared to be ageing Duran Duran fans (that's how 80s synth they were) who all seemed to disapear before the touring band (Raveonettes i think) came on. Really thought they'd have been signed up by now.
