So, bands you said were shit and then realised you loved them
Stars of the lid
does she count?
She looks about 10. Paedopop
but i used to hate her! now i realise my initial mistake.
was leaving Minehead in my friend's car with "Outrageous" blasting from the speakers. TUNE!
that is such a tune.
My Chemical Romance
but there's certainly upcoming bands like Blah Blah Blah who I was pretty dismisive about at first but am now pretty enthusiastic about.
I don't like admitting when I'm wrong. I tend to keep quieter these days until I have a really informed opinion.
Although it was Peach, Plum, Pear that did it for me.
I dismissed a Villalobos EP as not very good on first listen when it's actually brilliant.
sonic youth. i hated them for ages. i clearly hadnt listened properly tho.
I did this.
it was at Truck 2001 (i think), I turned up halfway through their set, pretty drunk, and they were playing some really stupid song, and then followed it up with some other really stupid song, so I walked off. From that day until about four years later I refused to listen to them, and even told people they were shit. I then realised what a dickhead I'd been when I saw them at All Tomorrows Parties, which was one of their last ever gigs.
the Stooges when I was about 14, lol
I was like that until I slam-danced madly to Jaggy Snake, Eradicate The Doubt and The Ideal Height, and then realised the rest was pretty good too. In truth, I think I was just going through an irrational fear of bearded scotsmen.
one. Although I was only 13 when I first started slagging them off, and then started loving them about a couple of years later, so I wouldn't really be in any position to stand by my early judgements.
to come round to CSS a bit more, after Off The Hook. I can't see myself loving them yet though.
0h yeah and Humble Pie.
thought both were rubbish when i first heard them.
now i think they are briiliant in their own special ways.
Hated Loser. Complete turnaround on hearing Where It's At.
i hated him when i 1st heard him now he is god in our house!
Probably others I can't think of...
before realising how amazing:
I saw them live at the Garage and didn't pay them much attention. It's since they've split up that I've got into their recorded work.
They seem like the band that this could happen to. But I just don't find them in the least bit amusing, and that's so important to their music. So maybe not.
but I wrote off the Tapes N Tapes album for ages. I just couldn't get into it for some reason. It's ace though. I was wrong.
but L7 made me eat hairy muff...
actually - and bear in mind I'm well more indie than all of you - when Travis released than 'coming around' single I was quite bowled over by it not being their usual dad-rock, so just for that one glorious minute they were great...
oh and fischerspooner but that was more due to them being signed to ministry of saaad
Steve Marriot's vocals did it for me
CIV - anyone remember them?
CIV were awesome!!!
'set your goals' is a pop punk classic. too bad none of the band wrote it.
Who wrote it?
The follow-up was pretty poor I thouhgt - I can't even remember what it was called...!
"Set Your Goals" now for the first time in years... it's fucking ace!
...Deerhoof at first. It took me a while, but I'm glad I went back to them.
Also when I was much much younger, I remember disliking Spiritualized. Then I caught them play some free festival in Preston (yep I'm going back that far), and they blew me away.
i was young and foolish
Biffy Clyro to some extent.
I HATED them, or just the idea of a bunch of guys being worshipped by scenesters, but then I heard Golden Skans and the album when I was on work experience and decided that I had been converted. Everyone keeps telling me the same will happen to me with Mika...fucking will not.
It took me a while to get into them but now I bloody loves them I do.
I got Sung Tongs as many nice things were said about it after it was released. I didn't like it, in fact I still don't really like it today. It put me off getting Feels for a long time when that came out but some persistant nagging from some people meant I caved in, and blow me down it was great. In fact most things they've done has been great apart from Sung Tongs! I do keep meaning to go back to it though, perhaps I will 'get it' one day.
I wouldn't say love, but I like them a lot.
Sung Tongs is shit.
First time I saw them I thought they were boring. Then I saw them at ATP and they blew me away. Not sure what happened there.
Also agree about The National. though it was seeing them live that made me realise they were good
