For those of you with MP3 blogs
Do you just put up any song you like, no matter the copyright, with some sort of disclaimer on the page?
What sort of trouble can you get into?
I just started an MP3 blog a couple of weeks ago, mostly because some of my friends had been asking me to do so, and am currently pondering these questions...
http://youpieblog.blogspot.com
It's in french. Nothing fancy, my only ambition is to share tracks I like with friends, along with some comments of course. I'm not planning on writing insightful reviews or witty posts on new rave...
That's exactly my problem
But I started one anyway without knowing anything, hope Marissa Nadler won't sue me for every Eurocent I've got ;-)
That's about the size of it
Summers does more mp3age then I do and I know he's had to take a couple of files down so maybe he'll have more of a handle on it, but as far as I'm aware if you have a disclaimer somewhere that all mp3s are for evaluation purposes only and won't be up for long, and put in links to where you can buy the tracks from properly and so on, there shouldn't be too much bother. Peeved labels and/or artists will usually email to ask you to take it down rather than slapping in an immediate lawsuit.
This is what I had in mind
Who would be stupid enough to sue an independant blog with 5 readers? A couple of days ago I went on several blogs to see what they were doing and they all had this disclaimer on them. I actually ended up copy-pasting the one on Jamie_summers 's blog. So, thanks for that!
WHAT??!?!
I'M GONNA SUE YOU NOW.
ahem.
yeh just go ahead and you only need to take stuff down if labels or bands ask, which they only tend to do if you put stuff up ages before release, but even then that seldom ever happens. tis only happened to me once with the jarvis songs from the harry potter soundtrack. oh and nina nastasia asked me to take some peel sessions down because she was re-recording them for release, so fair enough really.
your blog
looks good by the way
Thank you!
*blushes*
I actually really like yours, one of the few blogs I check regularly.
I've had some spare time at work these past two weeks to work on it. I was really surprised how quick and easy it was to set up something like this.
no, I'm not paying anything
I just opened a blogger account and a Fileden account to host the files.
Fileden is really good, they give you 500mo of space and 5go of bandwidth per month + It's an account, meaning you can always check which files are online and how much bandwidth you've used + links are permanent and you can link direct, which is so much less hassle than all those Yousendit and rapidshare accounts, and you can set up a small player that looks great and really makes it easy to listen to the tracks
oooh
thanks for the tip, i've been thinking about using my largely-neglected livejournal for some MP3 blogging and was wondering what to do about space :o)
I've only been using this
for three weeks or so but I think it's great. I haven't compared or anything so maybe there's better free services out there but fileden really does the trick for me.
Yeah, I'd rather like to start one
But a little more expansive. I'll ask Summers about it, I guess.
Maybe not in blog form either. Anyone got any good advice on mp3 hosting sites?
i paid £40 for
a year with 40gig webspace plus a domain. makes things easier really.
the los camp song
is 'It Started With A Mixx' not '...Match', no?
Ok, corrected it
posting your blog link on here is like unleashing a pack of wolves on yourself. But more fun.
So no one else
has any experiences to share on the subject?
I have the disclaimer too
but I've still had the stinking organisation that is the RIAA get in touch with my host commanding them to take files down (which annoyingly they did without asking me). Mind you, that's an American organisation, so I wonder what legal force it has in this country.
I use Filden, but am thinking of doing something like Jamie. The problem with Filden isn't space, but bandwidth. I don't use up a huge amount of megs, but I keep running out of bandwidth and have to pay them more money. At this rate it's going to cost me about £100 a year, so I need some cheaper options. Any suggestions? Recommendation?
pm me
and then when i get home i'll send you the url of the host i use.
Thanks for the tips
The other thing to say on this is that most decent labels have got with the whole blog thing now, and won't sue - rather the opposite, they see it as free advertising. The indies have been doing it for ages, but now the likes of EMI are getting on board (though the day Universal does, hell will freeze over).
Now this is a mixed blessing. You'll get some free music you like, but you'll also have to wade through loads of emails from PRs punting their dodgy wares to you.
aint that the truth
damn the man!
i hate mark smith the most (think thats his name). i forget which label he's from, but he emails me 3 times daily and NEVER sends music.
Okay. I'll be setting up mine soon...
Expect rare David Thomas Broughton, Jens Lekman and Jenny Lewis songs...
