but still, a technically gifted drummer who is brave(?) enough to put it into practice in his music.
alot of drummers don't display their skill in such a way as guitarists do perhaps. i like it.
Hill cheats slightly by using a different setup. Not that he aint good mind. Plus chippendale does all the squaks and distorted singing. not my fave though.
Zach Hill has to be seen to really get the full effect.
Ah the old Chippendale , Hill arguement eh, and of course don't forget Corsano.
Love em all, did anyone mention Hill taking one shoe off?
but you dont have to out-train certain habits of movement to learn how to play a kit like that. His kit also appears set up to allow easy rolling from one drum to the other. A perfectly sensible move, but it does mean that if you're going to make a chippendale/hill comparison you have to take it into account.
Eric Craven From hangedup is my all time favourite, because he can make a drum kit sound like machinery. And that gets my vote.
but i have friends who've studied the first two albums and can now play along accurately.
i cant imagine anyone i know ever being able to do what hill does
john stanier(sp?) is very good but i dont see why people get so excited about him. i mean, he plays live drum and bass well, and does some great polyrhythmic stuff
i cant believe that this thread still gets replies when its been made so many times.
i notice noones come up with any "omg keith moon" yet. i reckon thats more of a weekdaypeople thing to say
its how the drumming compliments the music. this guy is kinda the equivelent of a guitarist doing wanky solos all the way through the song, it just kinda gets annoying although the guy is obviously technically gifted
if it was razorlight, and he played like that throughout, it wouldnt work.
his playing is the basis of the music and the guitar slots into it perfectly
Charles Hayward innit, OK that track doesn't really show off his drumming ability but seeing as there is fuck all This Heat on youtube then make do with it as it's an awesome track.
There is some solo stuff filmed by alcxxk here, sound is terrible though!
:O
...
it pains me when anyone suggests otherwise
bit boring though.
thats not their best song
:is better
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cQd5IRwS44
i think alcxxk insulted me last time i said bad things but
its hard to tell from that clip, the best drumming isnt necessarily the fastest.
its not just that its fast
its so intricate and difficult to fully understand, but easy to grasp the overall metre of it
agreed
but still, a technically gifted drummer who is brave(?) enough to put it into practice in his music.
alot of drummers don't display their skill in such a way as guitarists do perhaps. i like it.
*is in awe*
this guy is better
because the stuff he does isn't just endless flubberdydubberdy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp5XqUxxe94
Plus he sings.
on a par with all of those
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb_ylQ7Xsdw
i cant fathom how people think chippendale is comparable to hill
hes a good drummer and it works and lightningbolt are fun and they kick ass live, but imo theyre just not on the same level
on same level.
by far. as a drummer i testify to that.
Hill cheats slightly by using a different setup. Not that he aint good mind. Plus chippendale does all the squaks and distorted singing. not my fave though.
how is having a different setup cheating?
i rate chris corsano by the way, and hill. corsano's set up seems much much more restricted than all the other examples.
RUINS impressed me too.
(rapscalion not 82)
also,
has anyone heard anything on the hill/rodrigues-lopez album?
i'd expect NO GOOD to come of it
i'd expect
AWESOME PROG ACENESS and lots of ARGUMENTS to come of it
I love Hella
Zach Hill has to be seen to really get the full effect.
Ah the old Chippendale , Hill arguement eh, and of course don't forget Corsano.
Love em all, did anyone mention Hill taking one shoe off?
corsano = legend
that is all.
well, i dont mean cheating
but you dont have to out-train certain habits of movement to learn how to play a kit like that. His kit also appears set up to allow easy rolling from one drum to the other. A perfectly sensible move, but it does mean that if you're going to make a chippendale/hill comparison you have to take it into account.

:D
Definitly not
That guys just doing drum rolls and hitting the snare on the accents.
Now this: The epitome of drumming. Watch the whole thing. amazing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGo3dT6Vo94
nope sorry
can't sit through ten minutes of that.
your loss
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i--4PdRO1tE
for the impatient
Wait for about 1m in.
i watched it all
i love the mars volta, but you're wrong. compared to hill and corsano (and chippendale) that drumming just isn't as varied, quick or inventive.
^^
this
granted, its not the best example
jon theodore is unbeatable.
Battles drummer is amazing too.
theodore is great
but i have friends who've studied the first two albums and can now play along accurately.
i cant imagine anyone i know ever being able to do what hill does
john stanier(sp?) is very good but i dont see why people get so excited about him. i mean, he plays live drum and bass well, and does some great polyrhythmic stuff

Stanier is great because....
of his playing in Helmet.
Betty has the best drum sound ever. There's something just beautiful about his timing and feel on every track on that album.
no he isn't
his stuff is more complex than that.
it's by no means the most complex stuff about, but it's showy and people like a show
TMV druumer is ace too though
I don't know how to rate
drumming, speed? diversity? a sound that appeals to me...and my semi-indie sensibilities?
well i think
its how the drumming compliments the music. this guy is kinda the equivelent of a guitarist doing wanky solos all the way through the song, it just kinda gets annoying although the guy is obviously technically gifted
no
that guy is the eqivalent of swapping all the conventions around and carrying all the music with percussion rather than guitars.
and wanky solis are ace.
no they're not
The reason hella are good is because they're both doing wanky solos and it sounds really impressive.
But it can get so boring even though it changes every 20 seconds.
I definitely wouldn't go so far as to say he's the best drummer ever.
they're both doing wanky solos
but all the hella i've heard has focussed on hills drumming
They're both at pretty much the same tempo
I don't think that means the focus is on the rhythm of the percussion. They're equal measures.
by pretty much the same tempo I do of course mean exactly the same
bluh
Nile
Way metal I know, but how intense is this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41CVK6si-sE
I love at the very end when he puts his sticks down like he HASN'T just been playing the fastest blast-beats ever for 6 minutes.
Beats all this wimp-core being posted. ;-)
If we're talking metal
or even Nile for that matter, then Derek Roddy wins hands down. John Longstreth is also ridiculous.
Everyone should watch this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhQ-Bk7W8H0
:D
Get fast double kicks sorted
and youre done with that mate. Soloing ont the hands aint hard, but getting kicks at the right time int the right place is the fucking killer.
It makes the lower end of the sound lose all its potency, that does. Inneffectie, wasteful drumming- why be heavy ALL the time?
its not that at all
if it was razorlight, and he played like that throughout, it wouldnt work.
his playing is the basis of the music and the guitar slots into it perfectly
tbh
i couldnt judge from that clip really and i dont know that much about hella
watch the whole clip
if you haven't already done so.
Given that this is the most amazing drummer thread
amazing = best drum wanking ever.
So stuff like it appealing to you gans oot the window, like. Otherwise stuff like
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le3LU8va59w
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71cGLyOKhSc
would win for me. Rock.
Um, may be completely wrong here...
Not exactly my area of expertise.
But doesn't the Hella drummer drum on the new Marnie Stern record?
...Anyone?
..
Yes
...
Tomas Haake
i'm not gonna click this link
because i know, if sanity prevails, it'll be Dominic from Ikara Colt.
You're insane, thommo...
The way
i like it.
i think that was his 'look'
i saw him play with one stick clenched between his teeth, bashing away on the kit with the other which i think was his bad hand...
As I've said before.
He is AWESOME. But he plays way too fast for the rest of the band to keep up!
yeah
totally unique. i don't know shit about drumming, but easily my favourite drummer.
yeah he's good...
there are a lot of drummers about playing this type of stuff.
this guy is my kinda thing.
http://www.drummerworld.com/Drumclinic/Bernard_Purdieshuffle2.html
the most recorded drummer in the world.
my absolute favourite drummer is loel campbell from wintersleep
http://www.wintersleep.com/
best drummer in the world!! omg!!!
(or at least the best drummer in um, east canada).

In tribute to Guthrie
Here is an amazing singing drummer:

the best drummer
is Ben Koller.
No need to post in the thread again
he is quite underrated actually.
i think 'no heroes' has his best drumming so far, really variated.
Corsano is great:
