favourite sonic youth album

restlessboy [Edit] [Delete] 53 replies 20:39, 13 February '07

mine is 'murray street' but i'm a relative noob to them.

i just got sonic nurse which seems to be like murray street but less concise and tuneful. what else have they done like this? presumably the other Jim O'Rourke one?

Also what's the deal with 'kim gordon and the arthur doyle hand cream' on my promo cd (cheaper) it's called 'mariah carey and the arther doyle hand cream' - did they get sued or summat?

has everything i love about sonic youth all in the one package

  • Hurrah

I also say Murray Street. I wanted to like A Thousand Leaves more, because it has Sunday on it (my favourite SY song).

  • Goo!

...but i admit it's not their best.

      or a thousand leaves

      • At the moment I think

        1. Dirty
        2. EVOL
        3. Goo
        4. Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star
        5. Daydream Nation

But I have yet to purchase 'Sister' or 'a thousand leaves' so all that could change soon!

    • I like Daydream Nation best

I think it's their most consistent album. A classic.

    • Murray Street

      is FABULOUS.

In order my favourites are probably.

      1) Daydream Nation
      2) Murray Street
      3) Evol
      4) Sister

    • I don't have all their stuff, for shame

I want to get Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped next...I don't know if I'd be a fan of the more experimental spoken wordy stuff.

But I think EVOL is ace, and Dirty is very very good.

      lemonbrickcombo | 13 Feb '07, 22:04 | X
    • i really must say

there's something unattainably brilliant about Rather Ripped.

it actually sounds like something 17 year olds would release, and it's so effortlessly 'classic' sounding i can barely go a day without wanting to listen to it again.

      • ..

Rather Ripped is tedious - I could barely listen the whole way through without getting bored, and I only did that because I was trying to give it a chance. It's SY on autopilot.

        My favorite is Daydream Nation.

        • thing is

there's something about their autopilot that's irresistable.

i know it's lazy, and i know it's not their best record, but there's just something about it that makes me immeasurably happy.

          • Another vote

for Sister - but Rather Ripped is indeed effortlessly great. Goo has some fantastique moments, but its pretty patch. Teenage Riot pretty much makes Daydream Nation!

And because I have been drinking I would like to exclaim:

when they suddenly burst into the most savage, nihilistic cover ever of I Wanna Be Your Dog, its unbelievable.

Our Band Could Be Your Life describe it as being incredibly.. well, savage, and nihilistic. there's a bit where it describes a london show that came after a 6 week european tour, and thurston's hands were so ravaged he could barely play...

                          It's a good book.

Enjoyed the Dinosaur Jr story most, I think. Will they ever make it into a tv movie like the Karen Carpenter story?

                          I hope so.

                          • Sonic Nurse

is so so so good. Hooky tunes, lovely guitar interplay, Kim Gordon's vocal on 'I love you golden blue' could almost be her best vocal delivery.

I love Sonic Youth, almost the best band ever (although I don't own all their releases). I would think it strange that 'Experimental Jet Set...' has been voted as their best effort but each to their own.

I can't actually pick a favourite as all the ones I know are so good. It used to be 'Sister' for ages. But they are all amazing.

                      • Murray Street is their best I think.

The ones that came after are a bit like it but as good.
I like Sister increasingly. I like Daydream Nation a lot. Dirty is OK.

                      • I'm listening to Murray Street for the first time now

I saw them on that tour and the Sonic Nurse gig was about 500 times better.

Dunno, my mate who's a big SY fan never rated it so I never really bothered.

I think I don't have a favourite album. I've probably listened to Sonic Nurse the most all the way through but normally I just put on loads of different tracks on my MP3.

If I had to pick one album I would probably be really boring and pick Dirty because it has 100%, Swimsuit Issue and Sugar Kane on it.
