Coldplay
I don't care what you think of their bland, meat and potatoes, coffee table... *looks at Pitchfork*... by-numbers indie, I think they are an absolutely fantastic band.
Enough of that. What are your favourite songs?
High Speed
Spies
Shiver
Everything's Not Lost
Warning Sign
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face
Amsterdam
Square One
White Shadows
Fix You
Talk
Also, has anyone seen them live? If you like them, and you haven't, you really should. They're probably the best live band I've seen. 'Amazing' doesn't do them justice.

Coldplay
if you don't care what people think of them,
and you clearly think 'everyone' on here finds them to be 'coffee table', then why are you asking what people's favourite songs are?
So the minority
can tell him what their favourite songs are?
(clearly he doesn't literally mean "everyone")
there isn't even that implication though
i'd rather not, you contrary little gobshite.
He was kind of right though.
You misunderstood me but tried to humiliate me at the same time, which is pretty shit to be honest.
i wasn't trying to humiliate you in the slightest
i just thought that for all the accusations that get levelled at you for making deliberately provocative threads, your wording on this didn't exactly defend yourself very well.
This isn't a provocative thread.
I was saying I wanted to know Coldplay's fans favourite songs.
What I didn't want to know is how John Brainlove would like to see Coldplay get eaten by a pack of hungry tigers or something.
well, yeah
it's just the way you seem to assume everyone hates a lot of what you like and then ask everyone their opinion.
meh.
No I don't.
I assume the majority hate me.
I was asking for the minority's views.
Sorry.
surely the majority like the popular bands?
there's going to be far more fans of Coldplay on here than there are of a lot of the folk obscurities i enjoy, i know from experience.
DiS isn't exactly www.ihatemusic.com or anything.
But there's also
gonna be more people who acitvely dislike popular bands on here than those who dislike your "folk obscurities". If you (or anyone) makes a thread about an obscure folk band, the chances are it will just drop after a few, mainly positive replies.
If you make a positive thread about about a popular band you leave yourself open to abuse.
Innit?
it's easy to disregard the 'they're shit' responses.
there's a world of difference between a constructive response and one that's not.
a thread about a popular band will get more negative responses, sure, but it's also likely to get more than one or two users posting positively on it.
i think it's a bit perverse to get some kind of elitist 'indie cred' from the fact that you believe everyone dislikes the music you do.
yeah but it's easy
just to not post the "they're shit' responses in the first place innit. I dunno.
Let's all just get along.
yes
but you always get that because it's easy to say that.
i just find threads worded like this to be invertedly elitist and it's really fucking pretentious, frankly.
I have seen them live.
I enjoyed it.
I like Parachutes a lot. I used to like A Rush of Blood to the Head but I listened to it recently and found it very, very boring.
My favourite songs are basically the first album + See You Soon.
Bye!
theyre great
they signed my acoustic guitar, it was the first one theyd ever signed =D
bf
How much did you get for it on ebay?
lol
i aint selling it, it's the only acoustic i have =)
bf
true, and it would SAVE money in that you wouldn't have to buy any meths to clean the writing off!
Also:
Til Kindom Come is a good song.
KINGDOM
first album good
second pretty good
third the dullest thing i own.
favourite songs? probably the singles off the two good albums.
I used to respect you.
Oh wait, no I didn't.
:D
i've never really
cared much for anything after Parachutes, so most of those really. Except Yellow, Everything's Not Lost and that excrutiating hidden track.
Life Is For Living?
I like that one.
Trouble is probably the worst off the first album.
Nah
i think that's one of the better ones.
i think my favourite is High Speed. Or Spies. Or Shiver. Or Don't Panic.
maybe
i just heard it too many times, i don't tend to like their singles that much
I seem to be in the minority...
...in thinking that X&Y is by far their best album. Favourite songs? Oooooh, Talk is way up there for sure, Square One, A Message, Don't Panic, Yellow, Daylight, The Scientist and Speed Of Sound, those ones do it for me especially.
i saw them live at glastonbury
they were ok. their music is ok. i dont really hate/love them. i do like tho:
shiver
in my place
clocks
and
In My Place is probably the worst off the second album.
its ok
i dont really care that much
fair enough
they have much better songs though
fight!
to be fair
i only listened to half the second album. and i only know shiver cos my mate used to always play it in the car when we went swimming
Clocks makes me feel sick.
Off the second album I quite like Amsterdam, Green Eyes & Politik. The rest I can do without.
They have the potential for greatness.
The title track of their second album, and the opening six tracks of X & Y back this up.
But they'll never break free from the blandness that engulfs their not so good work.
They've got to the point were they can't turn away from the mainstream, and do what Radiohead did. It's just not possible anymore for a band that has had 3 huge multi-selling crowd-pleasing albums.
I hope they prove me wrong, as I think they've done some very good things.
Easy to forget...
...that they're pretty good live. I'd watch them live anyway but I can't imagine myself putting on a record in the near future.
And X&Y was their Be Here Now...
1) Third album
2) Everyone immediately felt duty bound to give it amazing reviews (this and Be Here Now got 5 stars in Q, for one)
3) Retrospectively everyone realised it's their weakest album by some distance
They could possibly make a great album again but I don't know if I'd go as far as to buy it to find out...
this thread
has made me want to listen to them again. I haven't done so in aaages.
.
Because they are popular, they are put under pressure to be AMAZING by some people and dismissed by others.
it's a bit cynical, don't you think?
some people do like to make their own minds up.
i agree
i like the first two albums. i don't dislike x and y because i'm now a snob, i dislike it because it's far far too smooth, incredibly dull and essentially rubbish.
the whole charm of parachutes was how rough it sounded, almost diy, whereas x and y sounds like money thrown at a mixing desk.
yeah
they need all the edges they can get.
yes
i don't entirely agree, that's^ what i thought elbam was saying though.
they are a band
that wants to be the best at being average, and bless their undoubtedly cotton socks, they've achieved that.
What's that recent one which goes Wah Wah Wah, Wah Wah, Wah Wah Wah Wah Wah? That's alright.
a friend once told me that
politic sounded like godspeed you!black emperor. i kinda agree with him
wha wha wha. wha wha wha
wha wha wot?
erm
I do like a few of their songs. I think Don't Panic is gorgeous and by far their crowning acheivement, but I do also enjoy The Scientist, Warning Sign, Amsterdam and Fix You.
oh and Politik
that's pretty damn good.
This thread
makes me want to listen to X & Y. I think I will.
:)
I do agree with you though, Mr Magpie.
The second half of it is weak with a capital W.
I really like Parachutes
and still put it on from time to time. I appreciate that a band wants to evolve and try new things, but I'm really not big on the second two albums. Parachutes is quite sweet and understated, and feels a lot more personal
I really like some Coldplay songs.
Namely these:
Don't Panic
Shiver
Trouble
High Speed
Politik
Green Eyes
Warning Sign
Amsterdam
Rush of Blood To The Head
See You Soon
Speed of Sound
I think that's it.
I saw them live at the Albert Hall and it was actually pretty boring but I still enjoy the tracks above.
I like Green Eyes
It reminds me of somebody
is it me?
Yes
Come 'ere
the third album..
all that talk of reinventing the wheel/ kraftwerk etc and all they could produce was a U2 album, mucho dissapointing
but yeah parachutes was pretty much the first album i ever bought so i have/ had a soft spot for them. That album generally contains most of the songs i really like by them...
parachutes is good
the other 2 have a few good songs but you can hear the need of their record company for them to be enormous...
My favourite song is : only superstition
Other songs I really like :
Brothers & Sisters
don't panic
such a rush
everything's not lost
god put a smile...
and live
they were great first time I saw them for the release of 'parachutes'. 6 months later, they just looked lke agents of the state...
I forgot about Only Superstition.
Good song.
the FP ep
is really good...
I own Parachutes but it palled fairly quickly
I liked 'Yellow' when it came out but now I find it boring.
Trouble was pretty good I seem to remember. It's not an album I rush to pick out and play, though.
The new album had four tracks I like on it, namely tracks 1, 3, 5 and 7. Basically all the ones where they're trying to be different. The other stuff was pretty terrible.
I think from Rush of Blood the only single I liked was 'In My Place'. Maybe.
I saw them live at Glastonbury 2000 or 1999 on the Other stage. They were intensely average as a live band.
Fair enough.
But I think as they've become more of a 'stadium band' with their bigger sound, they really pull it off.
i used to absolutely love them
I've seen them 3.5 times (the .5 is from glastonbury 2005 when i fell asleep watching them), and they were quite spellbounding at the time.
but I very rarely listen to them anymore and have lost interest in them since the second album.
Favourite songs:
shiver
the scientist
everything is not lost
their first album is fucking awesome.
their second is nearly a parody of themselves. it's alright tho. i liked x&y but never listen to it.
The other day
I was in a car with a mate, and we were listening to the radio. A Coldplay song came on, and I turned it up. True story. He looked at me in shock, but I just told him to listen. He did.
A good song is a good song, no matter who did it. So, to that end, Don't Panic is my favourite. Or Shiver.
I like the following:
Clocks
Speed Of Sound
A Rush Of Blood To The Head
Don't Panic
A Whisper
Some others I can't remember the names of.
I quite like
Don't Panic
See You Soon
The Scientist
They're definitely talented, much more so than Keane, Snow Patrol Mk 2, Blunt who jumped on the bandwagon.
The acceptable face of easy listening?
the first record is brilliant
i hated the second, the last one wasnt too bad either.
and when i saw them at crystal palace they werent at all shabby!
parachutes is mostly decent
but when i first heard "in my place" i could barely believe how bad it was. like someone's already said (kinda), it was like a coldplay parody. the lyrics are so very very bad...the most banal, soulless, rhyming-dictionary-indebted, vague nothingness you could possibly imagine. and way the chorus monotonously and loudly whines at you about what might as well be nothing at all.... clocks is sort of obnoxiously bland, like staring directly into a cheap office striplight for four minutes. i havent really bothered to listen to much since then beyond then..."fix you" is truly amazingly awful though
I still really like Parchutes
First album I can remember buying.
I've gone off Rush of Blood, and I don't like X&Y.
Don't Panic, especially the version off the Blue Room EP.
Tradefair Maker
most of debut lp, a bit of 2nd lp, the Kraftwerk one on the 3rd lp, hate their guts now, associations with U2 & that puke of a wife don't help.
a good friend said i was being a bit harsh on coldplay
he has reasonable taste so after seeing this post and talking to him i listend to them again, and i was right the first time. they are average at best. the production is the best thing about their music
They used to be my favourite band EVER.
Loved all of Parachutes and Rush of Blood, X&Y had some great songs (Speeed of Sound, Fix You, Square One), not listened to La Vida Loca. Was there another one in between? I can't remember.
Saw them live a few times and they remain one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Wembley 2002 I think it was was the best, and Crystal Palace with Interpol was pretty amazing.
I don't think any mainstream (and I include the potentially mainstream, the Stornoways and Mumfords (both shit) of this world) British band will have songs as excellent as Shiver and Don't Panic in their entire career let alone debut album.
I fucking love X&Y
There, I said it. I really like the last one too. In fact, I think I prefer the last two to the first two.
Rush Of Blood To the Head
is one of the albums of the last decade imo.
i wish id seen them live in a smaller, intimate setting though. i've only seen them at glasto when every single person was singing along at the top of their voice. kinda spoilt it a bit.
i admire them, nice band, good songs
and first album was fantastic,
i even love their last one
and my favorite right now is LOST
