Aftertaste is nae too shabby, though they had completely thrown out the lo-fi production by this point. Stanier and Henry Bogdan were still a part of the outfit then...so in that sense it's no less of a Helmet record really, a little less jazz influenced and a lot more linear.
Size Matters is a strange one, recorded/written with Danny Lohner and John Tempesta from NiN and White Zombie respectively...i don't think it's as shit as it gets stick for, either, but there's a few too many harmonies when you compare it to the rest of their catalogue. A few of the songs were apparently intended for a release by Hamilton's interim outfit, Gandhi (demos are kicking around online). I read in an interview with the man that Interscope ultimately persuaded him to take back the Helmet moniker, hence what we've got now.
Monochrome is an attempt at a return to those Meantime days, results vary and, for good or ill, there's some ugly shit on that album.
Monochrome, serious efforts have been made to get away from that sheen, even employing Wharton Tiers to produce it...been listening to it for months and still dunno if i even like it...it's just ugly...which was sortof the initial appeal in Helmet, to me.
a few songs from meantime and a few from betty. I think meantime seems to be standing out a little, but its close. The riffage is pretty epic, quite kyuss-esque which goes down a treat with me.
Also checked out Don Cab who are pretty good. Seem to feature fairly awesome track names aswell.
mmm acting, i love me some good acting
Meantime
or Betty
http://www.markprindle.com/helmet.htm
for reviews
Betty
then Meantime.
Then strap it on.
Then buy the unsung single. Then don't bother listening to meantime.
Then keep listening to Betty and Strap it on. Especially strap it on.
Then get born annoying.
Oh, but if you're just wanting
something that sounds like Battles (and contains members of), probably better to check out Don Caballero first, if you haven't done so already.

Seconded
i love
strap in on...
meantime isok, but for me strap it on is the better....but i think sometimes it depends on which album you hear 1st. Strap....is very, vey raw.
i geard the drummer used to do up his snare skin with a drill.
a drill.
It should be made clear:
under NO circumstances buy anything after Betty.
Not size matters, not aftertaste, nor monochrome. All pretty shocking.
Effectively a different band for these three albums. A much rubbisher band
A DRILL!
It made it go "....Dink!" when he hit it....love it!
..
That makes no sense. Why not just use the "dink" cymbal?
meantime
actually aftertaste is ok on relisten
the new new one is a bit shocking though
what you do need to hear is how they were live around 93-4, absolutely amazing
Nah,
aftertaste just sounds like a slightly less capable band pretending to be Helmet.
Opinions and that...

Aftertaste and everything after
all has an unpleasant nu-metal sheen, which I can't get beyond. Too slick, too formulaic.
Clap your lugs around...

Yeah, I've heard it.
I know what you mean. The production is more to my taste, but the songs now just seem... tired.
Shame.
yourbettymybettywho'sbetty
....
meantime
the most 'metal' of music i honestly like...
my train of thoight
is aidentical to the warns'.
'tis unnerving
...well...
looking at your ratings, I can't say I'm surprised.
I kinda know
what some of you folk mean about Monochrome but it does have 3 or 4 incredible songs on it, especially Almost out of Sight.
Meantime
is clearly their best album.
Meantime = best
Betty = more accessible
Correct Jan
Betty is very good, and only just behind Meantime for me.
But of course
We are almost musical twins, after all!
That is true mate!
everyone else that i know that likes battles
hate Helmet but love don cab. and all of a sudden their appreciation for Stanier's drumming diminishes.
These people =
idiots
betty
great album
:)
hes also the drummer in tomahawk, along with mike patton, duane denison and the bassist from the melvins.
SUPERGROUP!
poor Rutmanis
doomed forever to be called 'the bassist from the melvins'
I'll always know him best as
'the bassist from the cows'
THE COWS!!
I hope Kevin is ok now :( He needs to join a new band so we can enjoy his amazing bass again.
I just got 'Strap It On' because it was the Amrep one! It's good so far.
It's good all the way!
In my top 5 Amrep (co) releases ever! And, as you know, that's saying A LOT.
You should check out Born Annoying - I reckon you'd like that.
I just might!
I found a Hammerhead cd last week in the town! It was a happy time.
Yes!
My favourite band in the world.
Great to see a thread about them on here.
Metallers start with Meantime
Indie Types start with Betty
Noise Lovers start with Strap It On or Born Annoying.
So overlooked.
well ive checked out

Listen to the beginning of 'tic'
on Betty. That should make up your mind.
