Such a shame...
How could he go from such a vibrant person with so much energy, to what looks like a guy singing at a pub kareoke night.
I guess whatever it is, its just what makes him such a genius.
is just brutal, all geniuses seem to 'lose it' at some point though.
He's not a well man, and his story is heartbreaking regardless of whether or not he's responsible for some brilliant music
Well, its just mental illness and powerful anti depressants taking their toll.
i mean, he's very very ill: i'd hardly expect a tour de force performance from him now.
i'd still go and see him now if it wasn't too extortionate.
largely though, what makes him so brilliant is the story and the old records: he's the kind of musician you don't really want to see live in one sense, although i'd still like to.
His life was such that he probably shouldave died by now.
i had never watched the second one. ever.
the first is enough to make you wonder how, when people create stuff like that..all this dross that people buy still exists.
i know they aren't as big as silverchair, but hardly pub kareoke surely?
watch the videos. (not 2)
Two months until I get to see him, and I can't wait.
I was just pointing out how different he is now. He seems to have lost all of his energy.
....thats what mental illness can do to you.
Surely if you opened this thread you had some existing knowledge/appreciate of Daniel Johnston, and surely you were well aware of his current mental state?
never have the effects of working at mcdonalds while recording youre album been so painfully obvious.
and then one day it just clicked and i heard past the fact he couldnt play guitar...its just weird like that. hes the only artist i dont mind people not liking, as long as they dont take the piss.
that i dont mind people arguing against- was what i meantr there.
he walked on, played 4 songs whilst clearly shaking and then left. It was brilliant.
I'm not trying to be funny - I'm genuinely interested
But looking at the old footage he seems like a maverick genius.
The new footage I just pity him.
Im sure he can still right classic songs but he just seems to have lost that "je ne sais quoi".
not sure why folks don't dig the second video...? Is it cos he looks a bit odd. I've seen Brian Wilson four times, and he's no different onstage
the other is cos of all the drugs, and cos he looks like hes lost all the passion. He seems drug addled and past it, not that its his fault.
oh I see...that band are piss poor. Sounds like some cheesy pick up band
His performance is pretty good though...despite his appearance.
I've got a single by him- 'dream scream' and that's much less coherent sounding than this
if I say that the only difference is that in the first video he's young and good-looking and how 'indie singers' are supposed to look and in the second he's middle-aged and fat and how 'indie singers' are not supposed to look?
I genuinely think that if both clips were on the radio this thread would not exist.
because the period of time hes changed in is incredibly short...his hair's gone gray, he's mumbling, and has to read lyrics off a sheet. its tragic. in the first he remembers his words off by heart. that was the mid 80's no? my mums changed less than him since then.
That's 3 quarters of my life. I don't see how you can call that "incredibly short"
I'm not gonna judge.
but its the fact he cant remember his lyrics that haunts me, he has to read the off the stand.
oh, and i thought brian wilson was stuffed when i saw him. but hes been going since the 60's. Johnson only since the 80's; admittedly its longer than i made out, but still...
hes got some wrinkles and all but thats it.
I mean he goes through peaks and troughs. Does the video just catch him during a down spell or is he always like that (I'm happy to acknowledge not knowing the answer to this)
but i found other video's where he looks in a pretty similar state...sadly.
its cos the 2nd song sounds shit
