David Thomas Broughton last night
Well I THOROUGHLY enjoyed that.
I got some rare 'face time' with -gen- and I also bumped into devonmalcolm, brooner and RadioShack.
The support act was okay. RadioShack described her as about '£1.50's worth' but I reckon DTB managed to be worth the other £6.50 of the entry price. He must have played for about an hour.
I actually grabbed about 50 mins of it via the power of the internal mic on my iRiver.
If you fancy what can only be described as a poor and lo-fi version of some of the gig:

The guy was seriously AMAZING!
we shall no longer mock
your taking of a laptop to the gig.
i really enjoyed it, had no idea what to expect but was mightily impressed. the first 5 minutes or so made my skin crawl, in a good way, but got a bit bored by the last few minutes of self-indulgence at the end, which was a shame as he could have gone off on such a high but there we go.
Yeah, that was weird
though the crowd saying things like 'Make it stop' and '1-2-3-4-go!' was funny.
I should point out this was my iRiver and not the laptop I used to record it. One of the reasons I own it and not an iPod.
i was thinking he might just carry on
until everyone gave up and went home.
there was one girl in particular who really wasn't liking it, which made me laugh.
ok, not laptop (me=not awake) but well done for having so much technology with you! i am almost downloaded.
what he said
iriver good.
Have you often seen him with a drummer before?
I saw him once at Easter and it was great but for this he had the guy from Knom helping him out with drum stuff on some tracks.
sorry
it aint u2
It's harder to understand when you're not there
He's got the Boss sampler pedal, the big red one, and he's feeding a mic into and his guitar. The mic picks up the drums and stuff too.
Most tracks involve him building stuff up in layers until it starts to sound like the end of Sgt. Peppers and then killing it and playing something quiet and small on the acoustic.
I just can't believe...
Noone picked up on the "face time with Gen" line... come on, this has been up, like, forty minutes!
Well I thought it would sound amusing
:D
Since she started working at the Luminaire I've seriously almost NEVER seen her about. She'll be there on Saturday, though, so that's good.
it was on the second line :P
Oh zxcvbnm
oh theo :(
i love him so much.
this is just making me feel bad cos i'm missing him in bristol.
I think I am in love
The Bruce Springsteen cover!
His dancing!
His breaking down the barrier between participant and performer!
He is so fucking awesome live, that if anyone ever gets the chance to go they should.
I should also mention
that I was feeling really ill, and only the quality of the performance, the company of Pigfoot and Brooner and the tin of Red Bull kept me there.
Also seeing Theo with his laptop made my year
So you're saying your girlfriend wasn't keeping you there with her company?
Oh dear, oh dear...
she was
as miserable as me
:(
i like the way theo holds his laptop like a book. especially as it is about the same size as a book.
I thought about
stealing his laptop
One of the best performers I've ever seen.
was he selling cd-rs? or his new album?
No
This WAS a disappointment!
well U2
weren't playing last night, so I HAD to do something else
haha
you're a twat
Whoah....
electric guitar!?
Yeah
Congratulations to DTB for finding the WORST electric guitar tone ever! :D
yeahhhhh!
He's *never* played it when I've seen him...
that'd be so amazing.
Also - Liberazione - I've never seen him play that live before!
I have no idea what any of his tracks are called
The electric guitar was new as was playing with a drummer but then I'd only seen him once.
The only one I definitely recognised from last time was the one that he played on the yukelele, it's the one that comes straight after the first section of noise I recorded when the drums finish. I think.
why do people keep laughing?
yeah
this intrigued me too.
Because his lyrics are quite humorous
He didn't seem to mind. That line about touching your fingers together and then you'll be feeling yourself...
It was that sort of night. He came into the audience and jumped around just before I started recording.
Later on he was dancing around when he did the beatbox one.
I liked that people were clearly listening to the lyrics. There's quite a lot of dark humour to them.
He was kind of miserable
but in that way that shows he really fucking LOVES being miserable...
I think that's why everyone laughs on the song where he talks about how he and a girl were in love so they had to tear it apart or something.
i met her in a kingstown bar
we fell in love, i knew it had to end
we took what we had and we ripped it apart
now here i am back in kingstown again...
oh, the bitter romance of bruce springsteen songs <3
there was silly dancing
and facial expressions
and him crawling through a window thing next to the stage and wandering into the crowd and strangeness
I really must reiterate
how fucking good it was. Its good that people like him realise the inherent limitations of folk music. Not like the silly bint before him.
silly bint :)
bint is such a great word.
dtb
is absolutely aboslutely brilliant :D
you're not wrong young man
Which is rare for rappers...
i would like to agree
with the opinion expressed above.
:(((((((((
i'm quite sad
i'll be missing him here next weekend, but there'll always be more time for David Thomas Broughton
anyone in Edinburgh on friday, GO AND SEE HIM
Argh he's so amazing
Probably the most intense performer I've ever ever seen
I'm seeing him in manchester on the 12th along with Kid_A. Anyone else coming?
sheffield
13th innit.
yes
me too a bit
