This was actually pretty exciting when it came out, wasn't it?
i saw them play at rough trade in covent just before it did. i was stood behind a rack of CDs, and couldn't see the band. i didn't know what they looked like until i saw them on TOTP a few weeks later :'(
first day it came out having only seen the video to take me out. fresh, new, exciting.
then the second one came out which is average at best.
I was properly, properly waiting for and excited about. I spent about a week listening to XFM from 7-11 in the evening just to hear Darts Of Pleasure on the radio, in case they played it. I was in love with them.
Their gig with Patrick Wolf at the ICA before the single came out remains one of the greatest things I think I've ever seen on a stage.
I fucking love that album.
the second one is really underrated. I think if they try hard they could release a fantastic third record. They just need to change style a bit. Someone really should ask them to do a James Bond theme.
but in their own ace pop way, it sounded different to everything around it. there is certainly something fresh and exciting about it which wasn't matched by all the "angular" bands that followed in their wake.
it's more literary, written with better intentions and with more to say and pulls the whole thing off with far more style and panache than others.
i liked the singles, but the album never clicked with me.
but really nothing new or special
