Request for advice from anyone who runs or releases music on a small indie label
Earler this week a small London-based indie label offered to release some of my new recordings.
I'm really pleased and enthusiastic about this as I think it's definitely the right step at the right time, and they seem really enthusiastic about my music and, in general, have good ideas about what they want to do. We've not yet sat down and had a specific chat about what I'm going to do with them but it's all promising.
However this is all pretty new to me and what I want to know is, when I sit down and talk to them, what sort of things to I need to establish?
I presume the obvious ones are:
a) What they intend to release and on what format
b) Who's paying for what/what will happen to the profits (or, at the very least, who'll cover the losses!)
c) Where it will be sold/What kind of distribution they have in place if any
d) How it will be promoted/What kind of PR/radio plugging contacts they have if any
To be honest I'm not really sure what I'm asking here but I suppose it's just things I need to be clear on/potential pitfalls I need to avoid. I'm fairly confident they're genuine about music and not out to fleece me in any way but I think they're pretty new to this too and I'm keen to get some advice from people in similar situations.
